PUNJAB

AMRITSAR
HONOUR FOR DON: Dr Pammy Manchanda, Professor of Mathematics Department of Guru Nanak Dev University, has been invited to deliver a paper on ‘wavelet methods for real world problems’ in the 5th International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM-2003), being organised by Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics in Sydney, Australia, on July 11.

ADMISSION DATES: Guru Nanak Dev University has extended the dates for admission to M.Sc. statistics, MA History and Bachelor of Social Sciences (honours). Interview of candidates for M.Sc statistics would be held on July 14. The last date for submission of forms for Bachelor of Social Sciences (honours) has been extended to July 14 and the entrance test for this course would be conducted on July 15. The last date for submission of forms for MA history has been extended to July 23. The entrance test for this course would be held on July 25.

LUDHIANA
AWARDED: Dr Sanjeev Gumber, who is working as a research fellow in the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Veterinary Medicine, College of Veterinary Sciences, Punjab Agricultural University, has been selected for international Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) and International Postgraduate Awards (IPA) funded by Australian Department of Education, Science and Technology (DEST) and University of Sydney, Australia, respectively. The DES conducts competition for 25 scholarships to be given globally every year. Dr Gumber will proceed for his doctoral degree at University of Sydney, Australia, on July 20. He recently completed his MVSc under the guidance of Dr Kulbir Singh. 

NO FEE HIKE: The managing committee of Shanti Tara College, Mandi Ahmedgarh, has decided not to increase the fees during the academic session 2003-04. Mr Arvind Malhotra, general secretary, said that the college wanted to provide higher education at affordable charges to boys and girls of rural and backward areas. He said that the college would charge Rs 5000 annually inclusive of all admission charges and funds from students seeking admission in BA and BCom second and third year. The annual fee would be Rs 6000 for the students taking admission to first year classes. A concession of Rs 1000 would be given to all girls seeking admission to BA I.

PATHANKOT
FOOD FOR PILGRIMS: Mr Ashok Sharma, Chairman, Punjab Tourism Development Corporation, on Tuesday flagged off a truck laden with eatables worth Rs 3 lakh for Amarnath yatra. The food items were arranged by the local unit of Punjab Beopar Mandal and the Mahadev Samiti, Batala.

PHAGWARA
COMPLAINT CENTRE: A complaint centre has been set up with a telephone No 101 regarding sanitation during the rains. This was decided at the Nagar Council meeting held here on Tuesday.

SANGRUR
DIRTY SEWERAGE: The local Citizens’ Welfare Association has urged the Director, Local Bodies, Punjab, to get the sewerage, especially near the main bus stand and Dhuri Gate Bazar, cleaned. The sewer remains choked and dirty water floods the main road, the association adds.

PANCHKULA
PLANTATION DRIVE: A sapling plantation drive was organised by the Lions Club (Host) on the premises of Bhavan Vidyalaya here on Wednesday. Over 100 saplings were planted by children of the school as well as the members of the Lions Club. The Principal of the school, Ms Shashi Banerjee, presided over the function and said the saplings would be nurtured and looked after by the children.

EUROKIDS OPENS: Eurokids, a chain of international standard pre-schools, opened in Sector 9 here. This is the first of its kind school to have come up here. This school has two sections- play school and Nursery Section and is open for children in the age group of 2-4 years. The classes are theme-based, have beautiful interiors. Teaching aids will be used in the school. A library facility is also there for children, informed Director Seema Verma.

HARYANA

AMBALA
MEETING: A meeting of the finance sub-committee of the Municipal Council, Ambala Sadar, was held here on Wednesday. Officiating president Suresh Garg presided over the meeting. Among others, Sudhir Jaiswal, Raj Kumar Garg and Rajesh Kumar attended the meeting. Mr Garg said a number of issues were discussed at the meeting including issues pertaining to employees as well as house tax.

HC STAYS PROCEEDINGS: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has stayed further proceedings against Amarjeet Bawa, Himachal unit president of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC). His arrest was earlier stayed by the High Court. Bawa was earlier booked in an alleged cheating case. Claiming to be innocent, Bawa had submitted that he was being implicated in false cases on the basis of frivolous allegations. Giving details, he had asserted that cases were being registered against him due to political reasons in an attempt to harass him and his associates. 

COACHING CAMP: The UT Sports Department is conducting an annual summer coaching camp for 785 players of senior section in all disciplines from July 10 to July 28. The coaching camp will be conducted under the supervision of qualified coaches of the department at the various sports coaching centres. The Sports Department will also provide refreshment to the trainees during the camp. According to a press release, the main objective of organising such camps was to increase the capacity, besides basics and general fitness of the players through conditioning.

FATEHABAD
NSS CAMP: The NSS wing of the local Manohar Memorial College organised vanmahotsava during the 10-day camp in progress in the college campus on Wednesday. Ms Swatantra Bala Chowdhary, MLA, Fatehabad, was the chief guest. Mr Dev Raj Batra, president of the college management committee, Dr Vinod Batra, Dr Prabha Batra, Dr AP Mehta, Dr CL Mehtani, Ms Ramita Batra, Mr Vinod Mehta Ms Veena Bhayana and the college Principal, Dr K.K. Arora, were present.

KALKA
HELD: The Kalka police has arrested two persons for passing obscene remarks on a woman. The victim reported to the police that Vijay Sharma and Deepak Sharma, both tenants at a house in her neighbourhood in upper mohalla in Kalka, passed remarks on her. The police has registered the case.

COMPLAINT: The Kalka unit of the Dalit Jan Kalyan Samiti has lodged a complaint with the Haryana Governor, Panchkula Deputy Commissioner and the SDM of Kalka against the Councillors of Kalka for allegedly stopping the samiti from running a school in the Balmiki Dharamshala in Kalka. The member of the samiti alleged that the two members were not allowing the samiti to start the new session at the Dharamshala.

BILASPUR
HALWAI ARRESTED: A police party raided a halwai Sher Singh’s shop at Gharan under Talai police station and seized illicit 3600 ml “desi” liquor from his possession. He was arrested under the Punjab Excise Act.

NURPUR
CHALLANED: In a special drive, the local police headed by Mr Suresh Thakur Deputy Superintendent Police, Nurpur, challaned 85 vehicles at Nurpur and Indora for violation of the Motor Vehicle Act on Tuesday. As much as Rs 27,400 in fines were collected from the defaulters.

PARWANOO
MISHAP: A truck rammed into the tax collection office of the Haryana Government at the Kalka — Parwanoo barrier on Monday night. As per the sources, the driver of the truck (HNA-3614) lost control over the vehicle while trying to evade collision with a tourist bus and rammed into the office. The office was badly damaged. However, nobody was injured.
