HONOUR FOR DON: Dr Pammy Manchanda, Professor of Mathematics Department of Guru Nanak Dev University, has been invited to deliver a paper on ‘wavelet methods for real world problems’ in the 5th International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM-2003), being organised by Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics in Sydney, Australia, on July 11.ADMISSION DATES: Guru Nanak Dev University has extended the dates for admission to M.Sc. statistics, MA History and Bachelor of Social Sciences (honours). Interview of candidates for M.Sc statistics would be held on July 14. The last date for submission of forms for Bachelor of Social Sciences (honours) has been extended to July 14 and the entrance test for this course would be conducted on July 15. The last date for submission of forms for MA history has been extended to July 23. The entrance test for this course would be held on July 25.

AWARDED: Dr Sanjeev Gumber, who is working as a research fellow in the Department of
Epidemiology and Preventive Veterinary Medicine, College of Veterinary Sciences, Punjab Agricultural University, has been selected for international Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) and International Postgraduate Awards (IPA) funded by Australian Department of Education, Science and Technology (DEST) and University of Sydney, Australia, respectively. The DES conducts competition for 25 scholarships to be given globally every year. Dr Gumber will proceed for his doctoral degree at University of Sydney, Australia, on July 20. He recently completed his MVSc under the guidance of Dr Kulbir Singh. NO
FEE HIKE: The managing committee of Shanti Tara College, Mandi Ahmedgarh, has decided not to increase the fees during the academic session 2003-04. Mr Arvind Malhotra, general secretary, said that the college wanted to provide higher education at affordable charges to boys and girls of rural and backward areas. He said that the college would charge Rs 5000 annually inclusive of all admission charges and funds from students seeking admission in BA and BCom second and third year. The annual fee would be Rs 6000 for the students taking admission to first year classes. A concession of Rs 1000 would be given to all girls seeking admission to BA I.

FOOD FOR PILGRIMS: Mr Ashok Sharma, Chairman, Punjab Tourism Development Corporation, on Tuesday flagged off a truck laden with eatables worth Rs 3 lakh for Amarnath yatra. The food items were arranged by the local unit of Punjab Beopar Mandal and the Mahadev Samiti, Batala.

DIRTY SEWERAGE: The local Citizens’ Welfare Association has urged the Director, Local Bodies, Punjab, to get the sewerage, especially near the main bus stand and Dhuri Gate Bazar, cleaned. The sewer remains choked and dirty water floods the main road, the association adds.
