Board decision delights students
Deepkamal Kaur

Ludhiana, July 9
The decision of the Punjab School Education Board to prepone the supplementary Class XII (science and commerce) examinations has brought cheer to students, who had been apprehending loss of an academic year.

The students, who had failed in one of the five subjects, have heaved a sigh of relief as earlier they had been denied admission to medical, engineering and other colleges. With the examination now scheduled for July 20, they are optimistic of getting admission to the colleges where admission process is still on.

While the board holds such examinations in September every year, this has happened for the first time that it has taken such a decision in the interest of the students.

Stating this, Mr Bachitar Singh, District Education Officer (Secondary), said many students had been persistently pleading that their examination be rescheduled since their entrance tests had been cleared to various colleges.

Varun Khosla, a non-medical student, said it was a great relief to him or else he would have to wait for another four months to take the examination.

However, students from humanities and vocational streams are dissatisfied with the decision as they feel that the board is doing injustice to them. Many such wards and their parents have written to the board Chairman demanding that their examination be also re-scheduled as they too could get admission in better colleges of their choice. In the letter, the students stated that many Panjab University colleges had told them they could not take admission this year and that they should now try next year. They said this way they were only eligible for a few diploma courses which they were not interested in.

Besides, many students who want to improve their results have demanded that the board should conduct a re-appear examination.

Kiran Miglani, a medical student, said it was shocking for her that her fellow friends who had failed in one subject would get a chance to improve marks, while she would not even be able to get admission to B Sc (medical) in any reputed college of the city.
