Shankaracharya's advice to India, Pak

Jammu, June 22
India and Pakistan should not stand on false prestige and must give up arrogance to help resolve the Kashmir issue, Jagadguru Shankracharya Ashokanand Devatirtha said today.

"The leaders of both countries need to understand the ground realities and give up their respective arrogance to resolve the issue so that common people in Jammu and Kashmir do not suffer any more", he told reporters here.

The Shankracharya, who performed a week-long "nachhatresy yagna" for world peace at the border town of Rajouri, said unless the two neighbourers came to terms to resolve the outstanding issues, including Kashmir, people will continue to suffer in India and Pakistan.

Favouring talks by central government with Kashmiri militants, he asked "if government could hold talks with the Naga leaders outside the country, what is the harm in talking to separatist leaders in Kashmir”.

Attributing the growth of secessionism and militancy to injustices to common people, the religious leader said: "where governments fail to provide justice to its citizens separatism and militancy is bound to spread there", and referred to the turmoil in Sri Lanka and Palestine.

Blaming the central and state governments for miseries of common people of Jammu and Kashmir, he said the authorities must create conditions to end the killings of its own people, whether they are innocent citizens, securitymen or militants.

Criticising politicians for exploiting godmen and saints for political purposes, Shankracharya said: "our role basically is to give spiritual guidance to people. Yet, the leaders of many political parties are exploiting the religious preachers or saints during elections", he said alleging" even the Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani has been doing it”. — PTI

Venkaiah to inaugurate BJP function today
Tribune News Service

Jammu, June 22
With warring factions of the BJP in the state having for the time being closed ranks on the issue of celebrating 50 years of the agitation launched by Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee for the complete integration of the state with the rest of the country, the BJP President, Mr Venkaiah Naidu, is coming here tomorrow to formally inaugurate the function.

The function, which was earlier being organised by the dissidents led by a senior leader, Lala Shiv Charan Gupta, is now being held officially by the BJP.

However, none of the dissident leaders has been given permission to address the public meeting in the presence of Mr Naidu. The speech of Mr Naidu will be preceded by speeches of Mr Nirmal Singh, state BJP chief, and Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, Minister of State for Defence.

Prof Gupta had created ripples in the BJP circles by participating in the function, which was organised by the dissidents for the celebrations. The dissidents had set up an organisation "Parayas" for celebrating 50 year of Dr Mukherjee's agitation.

The state BJP took a serious note of this and initiated disciplinary proceedings against Lala Shiv Charan Gupta, Mr Chander Mohan Sharma, vice-president of the party, and four others. However, the action was stalled following the intervention of the BJP high command, which summoned the warring groups to Delhi.

It has now been decided that the function would now be celebrated at the party level.

A BJP leader said that functions would be held at the district level and Dr Nirmal Singh would visit many areas to highlight the "pro-terrorist" and "anti-Jammu" actions of the coalition government headed by Mufti Sayeed.
