GGSIP University to introduce more courses, open new campuses

Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIP) has announced the introduction of new courses for the academic session 2003-04. University officials pointed out that the university in continuation with its thrust on professional courses has decided to begin courses in Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology and Occupational Therapy and a certificate course in Legal Awareness for the faculty and staff of the university.

Three new courses in Rehabilitation Therapy, Audio and Speech Processing and Nursing are also likely to be introduced. The Bachelor of Rehabilitation Therapy and the Bachelor of Audio and Speech Therapy courses will have an intake of 20 students each and will be of four-and-a-half years duration.

The authorities said that the university is also expanding its campuses. A campus stretching across 18 acres will be set up in Surajmal Vihar and will offer courses in Information Technology while another in Dwarka will be an integrated campus.

GGSIP at present offers 18 different programmes, including BTech and MTech, MBA, Environment Management, Law and Pharmacy. The university will also begin admissions for MTech programmes, the forms for the same will be available from May 27.

LG Dream Career Scholarship

LG Electronics India (LGEIL) have announced the ‘LG Dream Career Scholarship’ contest for the students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate IT courses from partner institutes like NIIT, Aptech and New Horizon across India.

The contest would span over a period of two weeks from May 25 to June 8, 2003. The registration for the contest would begin from May 13. LG India’s official website, www.lgezbuy.com, will host this scholarship programme.

Mr K. R. Kim, managing director, LGEIL, said: “Through this scholarship programme we wish to promote IT awareness among the student community and at the same time reward the deserving candidates. We intend to make this programme an annual affair.”

To enter the scholarship contest, eligible candidates will have to take up an online test, which will be live for two weeks on m. The test has been specifically designed by an expert panel to test the analytical and logical aspect of the students knowledge. The candidates can appear for the tests at the partnering institutes or from any other place where they have Internet access. Based on the test merit, the candidates would be eligible for the scholarship award, which would range from cash prizes to free niche courses in one of the IT education centres.

XLRI programme for executives

XLRI Jamshedpur has announced a 14-month programme designed specifically for working executives. The programme allows those enrolled to complete the courses in their own city.

The PGCBM are tailor-made for working executives and takes into consideration the demands on time. Lectures will be held twice a week, for three hours a day. The pedagogy followed for the programmes will be a judicious blend of lectures, theme presentations and case studies.

Participants will be continuously assessed through out the programme through offline as well as online quizzes and assignments. The sessions, comprising of 320 hours spread across 14 months, will be delivered on Hughes DirecWay Global Education interactive learning platform.

The heart of the platform is a powerful user interface that enables a large number of geographically distributed students to have a highly interactive “one to one” exchange with a central faculty.

The system incorporates live broadcast video, two-way audio and data interactivity to enable the students to watch and interact with the faculty live on their PCs. Conceptual discussions, case discussions and panel discussions will be the primary vehicle of learning on the platform.

The above programmes also involve a couple of visits to the XLRI campus for intensive learning. Eligibility requirements are a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of post-degree full-time work experience

APTECH career course recognised by Sudan University

The Sudan University of Science and Technology has recognised Aptech’s comprehensive career programme, ACCP World Program. The communiqué stated that Aptech would offer the degree programme from the Sudan University of Science and Technology to students from Aptech centres in Khartoum. The Sudan University has recently accorded two Aptech centres the status of approved colleges.

Aptech has recently been accredited by the Sudan University to offer BSCIT (Bachelor in Science and Information Technology) degree to students who will also undergo Aptech’s ACCP World Program, its latest career course offering, and a comprehensive international programme.

Aptech’s ACCP Program is designed in a modular approach, and enables a student to master the very latest technologies and prepares them to face the challenges of the future workplace.

Irish institute gives exemptions to NIIT graduates

NIIT graduates have reason to rejoice. The Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT) in Ireland has allowed them substantial exemptions from its bachelors and masters courses. Students undergoing a DNIIT programme can get two years exemption from a four-year Bachelor Programme in Computing. Students with a DNIIT and bachelor degree can join the final year of BSc courses or gain direct entry into a conversion Masters in Computing. Holders of the prestigious GNIIT title can gain direct entry into the final year of a Master in Computing course.

The Dundalk Institute of Technology has played a leading role in supplying the Irish and European software industry with developers and Internet technologists.

Talking about the NIIT and Dundalk programmes, the Irish Institute’s Head of Computing, Dr Bob McKiernan, said, “We were particularly struck by the depth of knowledge provided by the NIIT courses. The technical focus also is close to the approach taken in Ireland.”

Seminar on securities laws

The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) are jointly organising a National Seminar on ‘Securities Laws and Capital Market - The Road Ahead’ tomorrow.

The theme of the seminar will be deliberated under various broad heads, including Primary Market-Developments and New Concepts, Secondary Market-Trading and Infrastructure, Global Benchmarking of Regulatory Framework, Panel Discussion: Capital Market - The Road Ahead.

Senior corporate executives, company secretaries, practising professionals, merchant bankers and other capital market intermediaries from different parts of the country are expected to participate in the seminar, which will be inaugurated by Mr G. N. Bajpai, Chairman, SEBI.

Doctor found guilty, asked to pay Rs 4 lakh to patient

Sonepat: The District Consumers Redressal Forum, headed by Amrit Kirpal Singh, has found a doctor guilty of the lapse in operating a woman patient and ordered the payment of Rs 4 lakh with 10 per cent annual interest to her within 30 days after the issuing of the order. According to a report, the order of the Forum followed the decision of the complaint filed by the patient, Draupadi Kukreja, wife of D P Kukreja, resident of New

Housing Board Colony of Sector 14 in the city, alleging the lapse in the performance of an operation, conducted by a lady doctor on December 5, 1997. The complaint had been field on April 15, 1999, demanding a compensation of Rs 4.25 lakh from the doctor, who was responsible for the lapse in performing the operation.

The woman patient remained in the Bara Hindurao Hospital, Delhi, for 17 days where she was operated again by the doctors for taking out a sponge from the body. OC
