FATEHABAD BYELECTION Fatehabad, May 16 Addressing the rally, Mr Ajit Singh concentrated his speech on the Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Om Parkash Chautala, and his party. He did not utter a word against the Congress or its leader. He castigated Mr Chautala for ‘pretending to be a champion of the farmers’. He said the state government had failed to give adequate compensation to the farmers for drought, though it had sufficient funds. Mr Surender Singh said his friendship with the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) had just started and he hoped that the friendship would last for a long time. Earlier addressing mediapersons, the Union Minister said he did not have any personal animosity with the Chief Minister. He said he was opposed to the political ideology followed by him. The HVP President, Mr Bansi Lal, today addressed election meetings at Bothan Kalan, Dhingsaran, Bhodia Khera and Bangaon villages. Meanwhile, the All India Democratic Women Association (AIDWA) has announced its support to the CPM nominee, Mr Krishan Swaroop. Ms Jagmati Sangwan, state president of the AIDWA, announced this while talking to mediapersons here today. Ms Manjit Rathi, state secretary; Ms Raj Kumari, vice-president; Ms Anita Kranti, president of the local unit; and Ms Bimla Gandhas, a state committee member of the AIDWA, were present, among others. Ms Sangwan said though the INLD government had fielded a woman candidate, the party was not committed to the issues concerning women. She said when the Women’s Reservation Bill was presented in Parliament last week, none of the INLD MPs uttered word in favour of the Bill. She said the Women Commission constituted by the state government had totally failed to protect the rights of the women. She appreciated the Devi Roopak Yojna of the government but said the scheme had failed to benefit the people because of a plethora of conditions attached with it. She said the CPM had always espoused the cause of women in and outside Parliament. She said the issues concerning women like female foeticide, proper distribution of yellow cards, crime against women and proper supply of potable water had been left un-addressed by the previous governments. Mr Chautala will arrive here on a two-day visit on May 18. He will address public meetings at Daryapur, Daulatpur, Muse-Ahli, Ayalki, Ahrawan, Mohammadpur Sottar, Lahrian, Dholu, Bhuthan Kalan, Bhirdana and local Jawahar Chowk on May 18 and at Gorakhpur, Jandli Kalan, Mohammadpur Rohi, Dhanger, Bighar, Bangaon and Bhodia Khera on May 19. Blocked sewers: MC notice to telecom companies Ambala, May 16 Taking a serious note of the fact that telecom companies had laid cable through the drains which created a bottleneck, the council has served notice on the companies. The Executive Officer, Municipal Council, Ambala
Sadar, Mr K.K. Jain, said during the sanitation drive it had been observed that telecom companies had laid cables through the drains which had hampered the sewerage flow. He said the telecom companies had been served notice. “We have given them three days time to reply to the notice. We have told them that if the cable pipes are not removed from the drain, then the work will be carried out by the municipal council and the cost will have to borne by them,” he said. Mr Jain said the notice were received by the telecom companies today. “We want the drains should be cleared of all obstruction so that there is smooth flow. Otherwise, the garbage gets stuck causing accumulation in the sewer line,” he said. While polythene bags are the main cause for the drains getting blocked, people have used the drains for dumping garbage. Sanitation workers have recovered a number of household articles from the drains. For instance, in Sadar
Bazar, at least 500 tea spoons were taken out from the drain. Besides polythene bags, empty
liquor bottles, ropes and other articles commonly used in shops have been found. Another factor which is causing the choked drains is that in many places, the drains have been covered and the shops have come over it. A visit to the market reveals that in most cases, the drains have been covered by the shops. The holes which have been cut over the drains falls right inside the shops. Incidentally, the shop shutters are over the drain. The cleaning of the drains has led to the shops being closed for business since the garbage is being taken out from within the shop premises. Also, sanitation workers have discovered that the drains have been filled up and the area has been covered. “At least, about 22 trolleys of dry earth was taken out from a section of the drain today. People have simply blocked the drains and encroached upon the area. We have to put in extra effort to get it cleared,” an official said. A local resident pointed out that the extent of encroachment is clear after this sanitation drive. “The roads will automatically become broader and there will be space for pedestrian walk, if only the shops are directed to limit themselves within the authorised area,” he said. |
