Lake Club complex opened opened

Chandigarh, April 25
Lieut-Gen J.F.R. Jacob (retd), Governor Punjab and UT Administrator, today inaugurated the newly renovated Lake Club complex in Sector 6. The complex has now got a new-look reception, lounge, billiards room, table tennis table on imported wooden flooring. Facility to play cards and a banquet hall, which can cater to more than 400 persons, have also been added, said Lieut Col M. Berry (retd), general manager of the club.

General Jacob played billiards and visited the concrete tennis courts. He also played with children present there. He asked the Chief Engineer, UT, Mr Puranjit Singh, to augment the laying of synthetic tennis courts.

Later, he interacted with the band staff of the Chandigarh police.

The officers present on the occasion included Mr Virendra Singh, Adviser to the UT Administrator, Mr Karan Avtar Singh, Finance Secretary, Mr M.P. Singh, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Mr M. Ramsekhar, Deputy Commissioner, among others.

Football meet

Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, will host the Shivalik Trophy for Atoms Football championship in under-12 section. The championship will begin on May 2 and will be sponsored by Mr D.S. Bedi, Director-Principal of the school.

According to Mr Rakesh Bakshi, secretary, Chandigarh Football Association, the meet will see participation of different schools of the city. More than 10 teams have confirmed their participation. Players born on or after January 1, 1992 are eligible to take part in the meet. The meet will be played on a knock-out basis. Entries close on April 30.

Chandigarh victorious

Chandigarh defeated Minor District ‘A’ team by an innings and 67 runs in the second match of the Under-15 Inter-District Cricket Tournament for Sushil Bali Trophy played here at PCA stadium, SAS Nagar. Chandigarh had earlier scored 348 runs in 86 overs. In reply, the opposition got all out on 170 runs in 69 overs. In the second innings, after getting a follow on, Minor District was bundled out for 111 runs in 63 overs. Amanjit Singh of Chandigarh claimed eight wickets in the match.

Selection trials

As many as 67 players reported for the selection trials in volleyball and basketball for Shivalik sports academy. Volleyball saw participation of 53 players from various parts of the region.

According to Mr Mohan Nagreta, volleyball coach, Sports Authority of India, 19 boys were shortlisted for personal interviews scheduled for tomorrow. In basketball, six boys were shortlisted.

City shooters excel

Chandigarh shooters bagged six medals, including one gold, two silver and three bronze medals, in the recently concluded 46th National Shooting Championship at Big Bore Rifle section in Nahan (HP). The team comprising ASI Ram Sarup, constable Gurdev Singh and constable Rajesh Kumar bagged gold medal in team event.
