CM may announce INLD nominee today Fatehabad, April 20 Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala, two days earlier, had dared the former Chief Minister to field his son Kuldip or nephew Dura Ram from here. In reply, Mr Bhajan Lal yesterday said that instead of fielding his son or nephew, he would contest the by-poll himself if the Chief Minister was ready to contest himself on INLD ticket after resigning from his post. The INLD youth leader said that the former Chief Minister was in the habit of making excuses to evade issues. Mr Chautala the HVP had been rejected by the people of Haryana time and again. He alleged that former Chief Minister Bansi Lal was responsible for the delay in the construction of the SYL canal. Mr Abhey Singh informed that the Chief Minister would inaugurate the election office of INLD nominee here tomorrow. The Chief Minister might also announce the candidate of the party on the occasion, he indicated. He claimed that his party would win the by-election by a margin of over 50000 votes. Mr Banta Ram, chairman, of the Haryana Sugarfed and Mr Banarsi Dass, president of the Haryana Valmiki Mahasangh organised a meeting of the Balmiki Samaj here today, and appealed to the Dalits to vote for the INLD. The Haryana Vikas Party secretary general, Mr Surender Singh, continued his rural meetings for the third day today. Mr Pahlad Singh, the HVP nominee, Mr Gulbahar Singh, president of the District Bar Association and several other leaders of the party accompanied him. HVP leaders said that Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala used before coming to power used to say that the farmers themselves would decide the MSP of crop, but plight of farmers, they alleged, was such that there was no taker for their crop. He alleged that the cooperative sugar mills in the state had not been paying arrears to farmers since long. Mr Surender Singh claimed that the INLD government had done nothing to improve the power situation in the state. He claimed that all power generating units of the state had been installed during the tenure of his father. The HVP leader also lashed at the Congress and said that the party had neither any policy nor any leader. He said that it was the bankruptcy of the Congress that it was not finding a suitable candidate for the by-poll. |
BKU fast fails to move government Tohana (Fatehabad), April 20 The BKU activists have been on an indefinite fast since March 20 outside the office of the Subdivisional
Magistrate (SDM) here, at Shahpur village in Jind district and at Kaithal to demand the unconditional release of the Haryana BKU president, Mr Ghasi Ram
Nain; the propaganda secretary of the organisation, Mr Fateh Singh
Arya; and the president of the Ambala division unit of the BKU, Mr Guni
Prakash. Mr Nain was arrested by the Ambala police while he was participating in the canegrowers’ agitation to demand the payment of dues from the Naraingarh Sugar Mill, last year. While six persons have been sitting on an indefinite fast at Tohana, four and three BKU activists are observing the fast at Shahpur and Kaithal, respectively. At Tohana, the fasting BKU activists are led by Mr Chander Singh, treasurer of the Fatehabad district unit of the organisation. The others who are accompanying him are Mr Mewa Singh, Mr Jogi Ram, Mr Dharam Pal, Mr Tara Chand and Mr Sube Singh Arya. While Mr Dharam Pal had lost 10 kg till yesterday, the others too have lost about 8 kg each. Mr Arya had to be hospitalised a few days ago after he developed an obstruction in the urinary tract. He is still undergoing treatment in the Tohana Civil Hospital. The fasting BKU activists keep themselves busy by playing cards in the absence of a large number of men and women, who used to visit them for moral support in the early days of the agitation. It is not that the support for the BKU in the area has declined. Farmers and their families are busy in harvesting operations, which are at the peak these days. Once the harvesting operations are over, the BKU leaders claim, the crowds will be back. The peaceful method of protest, so potently used by Mahatma Gandhi against the British, has, however, failed to move the Haryana Government. So far, no attempt has been made to hold negotiations with the fasting BKU activists. The ruling Indian National Lok Dal seems to have adopted an attitude of apathy towards the BKU. Sources in the INLD say that the government has now nothing to do with the cases against the BKU leaders. It is for the law courts to grant them bail. Mr Rajbir Singh, alias Bira Ram, general secretary of the Fatehabad district unit of the BKU, says that after the harvesting operations are over, BKU activists would visit villages of the Fatehabad Assembly constituency and campaign against the ruling party in the byelection which is to be held on May 21. He says that the BKU activists would highlight the “anti-farmer” policies of the government. A bail application filed by the Indian Youth Congress president, Mr Randeep Singh Surjewala, on behalf of Mr Nain will come up for hearing before the Punjab and Haryana High Court on April 29. |
Surender Singh’s wit draws crowds Fatehabad, April 20 Mr Surender Singh makes punching jibes at leaders of other parties and mocks them in such a way that it sends the crowds into a fit of laughter. However, the best part of the HVP leader’s campaign is that he does not hesitate in laughing at himself. This unique style is being liked in villages and though it is too early for the people to make up their mind for the by-poll, they have been coming to the HVP leader’s meetings for the sheer wit and humour involved with these. The HVP leader tells the rural gatherings in his rustic ‘Bagree’ dialect that the present INLD government would have to face a worse defeat in the next General Election than that faced by his father, Mr Bansi Lal, after the Emergency in 1977. The HVP leader makes people laugh by some humorous comparisons. He compares the new power meters introduced by the present INLD government with the Chief Minister’s mobility, saying that these meters move day and night like Mr Chauatala, who is always on the wheels. He says the meters run whether the power is on or not. |
Byelection test of popularity Sirsa, April 20 Mr Ajay Chautala said usually the popularity of the ruling party starts falling after three years of rule but in case of the INLD it was increasing. Lashing at the Congress he said that it was using this byelection as an excuse to postpone their Jail Bharo
Aandolan. |

Ambala, April 20 He said a district-level conference of the party would be organised in Ambala City on April 27. The state president of the party, Mr Sheesh Pal Beniwal, will preside over the conference. He alleged that none of the MPs, elected from Ambala, had made efforts for the development of the city. He said the demand for a rail track from Naraingarh to Chandigarh had been pending for the past several years. He urged the state government to release the BKU leader, Mr Ghasi Ram Nain, lodged in the judicial custody in Ambala Central Jail for the past four months. He also criticised the arrest of a reporter at Kaithal, a few weeks back. Replying a question, he said the party had set up units in 17 districts of the state.
