Cong rally now on June 1
Kaithal, April 12
The next public meeting by the Congress to mobilise public opinion in favour of the implementation of the Supreme Court verdict on the completion of the SYL issue would be held at Kaithal on June 1 and not on May 25 as announced earlier. This was disclosed to mediapersons by Mr Birender Singh, a senior Congress leader and former HPCC chief here yesterday.

The Bharatiya Janata Party to select its candidate for the Fatehabad byelection has constituted a four-member committee to talk to party workers at Fatehabad and suggest names of candidates.

Rs 100 cr to de-silt canals, minors
Sirsa, April 12
The Haryana Government will spend Rs 100 crore to de-silt canals and minors in the State from April 13 to April 28 to provide sufficient water for irrigation. Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala stated this today after inaugurating the Shahidawali Minor here.

Tantrik, in-laws of woman booked
Karnal, April 12
The police today registered a case against a tantrik, husband, and in-laws of a woman who was allegedly handed over to the tantrik for “propitiation of her stars and removal of obstacles in her becoming pregnant”.

Lineman electrocuted
Ambala, April 12
One of the linemen of the HVPN posted at the Jagadhri Gate complaint centre in Ambala City was electrocuted today morning when he was repairing a faulty jumper on an electric pole near the complaint office.

Cong rally now on June 1

The next public meeting by the Congress to mobilise public opinion in favour of the implementation of the Supreme Court verdict on the completion of the SYL issue would be held at Kaithal on June 1 and not on May 25 as announced earlier. This was disclosed to mediapersons by Mr Birender Singh, a senior Congress leader and former HPCC chief here yesterday. He said this meeting had been named as ‘bhivisaya pehchan rally’.

Mr Birender Singh who claimed that about 1 lakh persons would participate in the rally and reaffirm their faith in the AICC president, Ms Sonia Gandhi. He said people had no faith in the leaders who had not been able to get SYL water for Haryana. He also announced that Mr Jai Parkash Congress, sitting MLA from Barwala would be the chief organiser of this meeting and Mr Surinder Madan former minister, Mr Ishwar Singh, DCC president and former MLA would be the co-conveners. He further said that only due to indifferent attitude of the government headed by Mr Chautala, Haryana had been deprived of the much-needed canal water and the Congress had been forced to launch a struggle and mobilise the people of Haryana on the issue.

He clarified that the stand of his party was that Haryana should get its due share in the Ravi-Beas waters through SYL canal at the earliest. The Congress leader also criticised the state government for not undertaking any effective desilting operations affecting the water carrying capacity of main canals.

The general secretary of the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) and in charge of party’s affairs in Haryana, Ms Mohsina Kidwai today held a meeting of top party leaders from Haryana in the national Capital. Mr Bhajan Lal, Haryana Congress chief, Congress party leader in the House, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, former Congress president Birender Singh and former Union Minister, Ms Selja attended the meeting.

The Congress leaders will again meet on April 16 to draw up party’s electoral strategy in Fatehabad.

Supporters of Mr Hooda said that the party’s “one-point” programme would be to wrest the Fetehabad seat from the INLD and prove to the people that popularity of Mr Om Prakash Chautala was on the wane. According to them, the May 25 Kaithal public meeting which was to be organised to press for early completion of SYL canal project had been deferred to keep the focus on Fatehabad. The new date is likely to be June 1.

The secretary of the HPCC Khazan Singh today circulated a statement comparing the five-year rule of the NDA coalition at the Centre and the progressive march of the Congress under the leadership of Ms Sonia Gandhi during the same period.

The Bharatiya Janata Party to select its candidate for the Fatehabad byelection has constituted a four-member committee to talk to party workers at Fatehabad and suggest names of candidates.

The committee comprising former Minister Mr GaneshiLal, Mr Shri Niwas Goyal, Mr Mahavir Prasad and Mr Om Parkash Ralhan held a meeting here at the residence of a local BJP Municipal Councillor last night. Sources said that Mr Kailash Sharma, General secretary of the state unit of the party, is also arriving here on April 13.

Rs 100 cr to de-silt canals, minors

Sirsa, April 12
The Haryana Government will spend Rs 100 crore to de-silt canals and minors in the State from April 13 to April 28 to provide sufficient water for irrigation. Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala stated this today after inaugurating the Shahidawali Minor here.

He said that check dams would also be constructed at various points along the Ghaggar river to ensure water for irrigation to farmers.

Addressing a gathering on this occasion, Mr Chautala said that the Government had already constructed Devi Lal Ottuweir Dam at a cost of Rs 35 crore on the Ghaggar river.

Later, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone of Gudia Khera Drain. PTI

Tantrik, in-laws of woman booked

Karnal, April 12
The police today registered a case against a tantrik, husband, and in-laws of a woman who was allegedly handed over to the tantrik for “propitiation of her stars and removal of obstacles in her becoming pregnant”.

The case was registered on the directions of a court in Nilokheri police station, but no arrest has been made so far.

As per reports, on March 8, this year, the in-laws of the woman invited the tantrik, Sanjay, resident of Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh), to their house. Soon after, Leela (not her real name) was handed over to the tantrik. Leela tried to resist but she was reportedly pushed inside the room by her husband. She was reported to have been raped several times for two days.

The woman complained that she had been tortured for bringing insufficient dowry as well and matter was reported to the panchayat. The panchayat, however, was of no help. The woman is presently at her parental house in Nadana village. UNI

Lineman electrocuted

Ambala, April 12
One of the linemen of the HVPN posted at the Jagadhri Gate complaint centre in Ambala City was electrocuted today morning when he was repairing a faulty jumper on an electric pole near the complaint office. The lineman, Chand Singh (52), who later succumbed to his injuries in the Civil Hospital was a resident of Jharmari village in Punjab situated near the Ambala-Chandigarh road.

According to information, the lineman was working on the h-type electric pole to tighten up a faulty jumper. All of sudden he got an electric shock and he fell down on the ground from the 30-feet-high electric pole.

The unit president of the HVPN Employees Union, Mr Som Nath, said a high-level inquiry should be conducted into the incident.
