Cong ‘jail bharo’ now from May 15
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 7
The Haryana Congress today postponed its decision to launch a “jail bharo” agitation to demand early construction of the SYL canal from April 13 to May 15.
Announcing this at a press conference here, Haryana Congress President, Bhajan Lal said the decision to postpone the agitation had been taken in view of the ongoing harvesting season.

Mr Bhajan Lal said a large number of Congress workers and leaders would court arrest in Delhi on May 15. He justified the venue for the “jail bharo” agitation on the ground that after the Supreme Court directions on the SYL canal, the ball was in the Centre’s court. Therefore, he said, the agitation by the Haryana Congress in Delhi was meant to put pressure on the Centre.

However, the former Chief Minister added that if necessary, the agitation would continue even after May 15. When asked what he meant by “if necessary”, he said if the police arrested only a few leaders and let off the others, the Congressmen would offer themselves for arrest on subsequent days also.

Mr Bhajan Lal said all MLAs and MPs of Haryana should resign to put pressure on the Centre to take up the construction of the canal. He said if the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash, promised to direct his party’s legislators to resign on the issue, the Congress MLAs were willing to submit their resignations first.

He said when his party came to power in Haryana, it would withdraw VAT. He also promised an inquiry into the circumstances under which “woefully inadequate” relief was distributed among drought-hit farmers.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the opinion on postponing the agitation was divided along faction lines at PCC executive committee meeting held today. While supporters of Mr Bhajan Lal were in favour of postponing the agitation, those of Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Leader of the Opposition, wanted that the original deadline should be stuck to.

Mr Hooda said decisions should be taken after due consideration because otherwise the party became an object of ridicule. Already the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, was jeering at the Congress. He said though he would abide by any decision taken at the meeting, he strongly believed that the agitation must be launched on the declared day.

Blaming Mr Devi Lal, former Deputy Prime Minister, and Mr Chautala, for the delay in the construction of the SYL canal by opposing the Rajiv-Longowal accord in 1986, Mr Hooda said if the canal could not be built now, it would never be made. He also pleaded that the agitation should be launched in the state and not at Chandigarh or in Delhi. Stressing the need for strengthening the organisation, Mr Hooda said it should not be like King Porus’s elephants which killed their own army.

The former Haryana Congress President, Mr Shamsher Singh Surjewala, wanted the agitation to start on May 5 in Chandigarh and not in Delhi.

Mr Jai Prakash Barwala and Mr Dharamvir(Tosham) wanted the meeting to adopt a resolution promising equal distribution of canal water when the Congress would come to power. When Dr Raghbir Singh Kadian(Beri) complained that Mr Bhajan Lal had appointed certain known INLD supporters as Presidents of the block Congress committees, certain supporters of Mr Bhajan Lal immediately pointed to his own Lok Dal origin.

Mr Lachhman Singh Kalka and Mr Mange Ram Gupta(Jind) had reservations about the efficacy and practicability of the “jail bharo” agitation.

The issue of the removal of about 65 block Congress committee Presidents was not brought for approval of the executive committee though the party constitution says that any disciplinary action against a partyman must be approved by the executive at its first meeting held after the action had been taken.

Nation’s tallest door at Ramgarh
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 7
Haryana has made a grand entry into the Limca Book of Records. The door of the fort at Ramgarh, near Panchkula, has been acknowledged as the tallest door in the country. This entry will be included in the forthcoming issue of the book.

A citation from Vijaya Ghose, Editor, Limca Book of Records, says: “The door of the 350-year-old Ramgarh Fort of the Chandel Rajput dynasty measures 37 ft in height and 14.5 ft in width. The country’s highest wooden door was rebuilt in late 1980s by Kanwar Mohan Singh, a scion of the former ruling family of Ramgarh, one of the 34 Cis-Sutlej states of Punjab, and is now a part of the premises converted into a heritage hotel. Each of its two panels weighs 21 quintals. The ingenious hinge mechanism allows the door to be opened and closed very easily despite a total weight of 42 quintals. The fort is located in Panchkula district (Haryana), 18 km from Chandigarh”.

When the Buland Darwaza at Fatehpur Sikri is mentioned as the tallest door in the country at 120 feet, the reference is to the doorway, that too while including the height of the stairs. The actual height of the door there is only 23 feet, which is easily overshadowed by the door at Fort Ramgarh (37 feet).

Rebuilding the huge door was a Herculean task. A total of 2000 mandays were spent in putting together the frame itself. Then came the task of affixing custom-made copper plates and 343 spikes on it. Nowadays, a window built into the door is used for entry and exist. The window itself is as big as an ordinary door. Part of the fort has been converted into a heritage hotel.
