Nothing seems to matter to the Enforcement Wing of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation when it comes to executing official orders. No wonder then that it bothered little before razing to the ground six standing furnaces, which helped Chandigarh produce a master potter, who brought laurels to the city in the field of craftsmanship.

City to have 19 ‘e-centres’

Following the Andhra Pradesh model, the Chandigarh Administration today decided to have 19 "e-centres" across the city which will be computerised and networked. At these centres, residents will have the facility of getting work done relating to seven important public dealing and revenue collecting offices at a single window.

The UT Health authorities today sounded a red alert as two isolation wards in city hospitals were set up and a copy of the WHO regarding the killer pneumonia dispatched to all local medical officers and private practitioners.

16,000 trees behind Sukhna saved

Nearly 16,000 trees on forest land immediately behind Sukhna Lake have escaped extinction following the decision of the UT Administration to give up its proposal regarding wet dredging of the lake bed in a bid to increase its depth.

Local doctor booked
Panchkula, April 2
The police has booked a local doctor on charges of threatening a resident of Mansa with a gun and snatching away Rs 4.5 lakh from him. Dr Tarsem Lal Jindal, Nirmal and two others reportedly threatened Harbans Lal on March 27 with a gun and forcibly took away Rs 4.5 lakh from him. 

Excise evasion of 1.70 cr detected
Panchkula, April 2
The Central Excise Commissionerate at Panchkula has detected central excise evasion of Rs 1.70 crore in 54 cases in the past four months. This was stated by Mr P.K. Sirohi, Commissioner, Central Excise, while addressing mediapersons here today.

NE of the oldest markets in the city is Sector 19-D. It has 46 shops and another 16 booths. First shops here had started coming up in 1956. Today 45 years later, it has some of the better known shops selling cloth, leading departmental store and a leading stationery shop which stocks all kinds of forms required in government transactions, besides shops selling photographic equipment. In all these years the city has grown. The market, despite its quite upper-end clientele, needs total revamping.

PEC to develop innovative computer devices

A Netherlands-based firm has approached Punjab Engineering College (PEC) here for collaborating on a project to design and develop some computer input devices which will be more user friendly and cause considerably less fatigue than present day conventional devices.

Free coaching classes for students appearing for engineering and medical entrance tests were inaugurated by the UT DPI (Schools), Mr D.S. Mangat, at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33, here today.

Centre not to shift courses
SAS Nagar, April 2
The Centre for Design and Advanced Computing has decided to postpone the shifting of its DOEACC courses from its campus in SAS Nagar to the Regional Computer Centre in Chandigarh for six months. The decision has been taken following a protest by over 100 students doing these courses in CDAC who refused to be shifted from here to Chandigarh.

Double murder case: hearing on June 3

The UT Additional District and Sessions Judge, Ms Sneh Prashar, today fixed the hearing in the infamous liquor shop double murder case for June 3. The prosecution has so far recorded the statements of four witnesses and more 10 witnesses are yet to be questioned.

Floodlit court of volleyball opened
Chandigarh, April 2
A floodlit court of volleyball for trainees of Sports Training Centre (STC) of the Sports Authority of India was inaugurated at Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 18, this evening. The court was inaugurated by the local MP, Mr Pawan Kumar Bansal. The total work costing Rs 1.30 lakh was executed by the UT Engineering Department under the MP Local Area Development Fund.

New Astroturf at sports complex soon

Finally, the hockey fraternity in the city has reasons to cheer, when the much-awaited synthetic turf with brand name Astro-Turf would be available for players in the Sector-42 sports complex in a few weeks. The turf was laid in 80s and it has been in a bad shape for the past few years.

Drive to check sale of sub-standard products

The enforcement staff of the Prevention of Food Adulteration of the Chandigarh Health Department has launched a drive to check the sale of adulterated and sub-standard food stuff in the city.

Notification on bar licencees for discos
Chandigarh, April 2
Discotheques in the city can now have bar licencees by paying Rs 1.25 lakh per annum as fee to the Chandigarh Administration. Pubs have been permitted in discos for the first time here and today a notification was issued to fix the fee. Also the fee payable for licencees wanting to sell flavoured alcoholic beverages was fixed.
