AMRITSAR
ANTI-TOBACCO DRIVE : The Amritsar Vikas Manch has demanded a ban on the sale of tobacco products following such a ban in Bihar from April 1. In a press note, Mr Kulwant Singh Sufi, general secretary of the manch, stated that products such as gutka and paan masala were being banned in some states. However, Punjab had not even banned smoking at public places.

BATALA
ELECTED: Mr Subash Sekhri of the Congress of Ward No 17 was elected president of the Batala Municipal Council on Tuesday. Mr Charan Dass Chann of the Congress of Ward No 32 was nominated a senior vice president and Mr Amarjit Singh Walia of the Congress of Ward No. 11 was nominated as junior vice-president. Mr Ashwant Sekhri, State Minister for Health, Industry and Employment was also present.

HOSHIARPUR
POSTPONED: The election to the post of President and Vice-President of the Municipal Council, Hariana town, was postponed on Wednesday. According to the Executive Officer of the Municipal Council the election was postponed on the order of the Additional Deputy Commissioner. Mr Balbir Singh Maini, SAD MLA and Jathedar Hardev Singh Kothe Jattan, Chairman, Hoshiarpur District Cooperative Milk Union Limited, alleged that the election had been postponed at the behest of Mr Kuldip Nanda, President, District Congress Committee.

BODY FOUND: The body of Gurpreet Singh (8) son of Manjit Kaur and Paramjit Singh, was found on March 31 from a vacant plot of Salempur village. According to police sources, Gurpreet Singh went from the house to play at about 4 p.m. on March 27 and did not come back home.

JALANDHAR
BLOOD DONATION: A blood donation camp was organised to mark Raising Day of the 7th and 27th Battalions of the Punjab Armed Police here on Tuesday. As many as 70 officers and jawans, including Commandant Rajpal Singh Sandhu donated blood. Mr J.P. Birdi, IG (PAP), took the salute. A special horse show was the main event.

LUDHIANA
SEMINAR: A national seminar on ‘Customer relationship management (CRM): Emerging trends in Indian industry’ will be organised by the Indian Society of Technical Education (ISTE) at the Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology, Gujarkhan Campus, on Saturday. Participants from many Indian universities, institutes and industry will participate in the seminar and discuss emerging subject of CRM and relevance in the Indian context. Dr H.P. Sinha, Programme Director and Executive Secretary, ISTE, New Delhi, will be the chief guest on the occasion. Dr M.A. Zahir, former Dean of the College of Basic Sciences, Punjab Agricultural University, will deliver the keynote address.

STUDENTS EXCEL: The Institute of Business Management and Fashion Technology has achieved excellent results in MBA first and third semester examination held in January, 2003. Among the students of third semester, Ms Sandeep Kaur has stood first with 74 per cent marks while Ms Karmneet Kaur, Ms Rajwant Kaur and Ms Manpreet Kaur have been clubbed second with 73 per cent marks. In the first semester, Ms Mandeep Kaur has stood first with 73 per cent marks while Ms Dimple Soni has got 72.2 per cent marks. Col H.S. Singha, Director, said it was a moment of pride as the institute was also declared the best in South Asia for the third time.

PHAGWARA
FAST AGAINST VAT: Activists of the Shiv Sena (Hindustan) led by its district president Ajay Mehta observed a daylong fast here on Tuesday to express solidarity with the business community protesting against VAT.

SAMRALA
DHARNA: The Land Mortgage Banks Employees Union of Punjab has decided to stage a dharna in front of the head office at Chandigarh on April 10, informed Mr Romesh Chander Chhandran, vice-president of the union, here on Wednesday. He condemned the dictatorial policies of the management and government officials dealing with bank business. 

SUNAM
PSEB SEMINAR: The Punjab State Electricity Board organised a “Save energy” seminar here an Tuesday evening, which was presided by Mr R.K. Bains, Superintendent, Sangrur Circle. Speakers informed schoolchildren and local residents about measures regarding saving energy. Almost all speakers emphasised that saving of one unit of electricity equalled generation of one unit of electricity. Prizes were distributed among schoolchildren who spoke on the occasion.

VIKRAMI SAMVAT: Hindu New Year was ushered in a traditional manner. A havan and puja was performed during “Vikrami Samvat 2060” celebrations in a traditional manner at Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32. Sweets were also distributed to the employees and patients admitted in the hospital. The employees pledged to work hard for the welfare of the hospital and patients, said general secretary of the employees union, Mr L.K. Tewari.

ELECTED: The following have been appointed officer-bearers of the Residents’ Welfare Organisation, Sector 38 A and B: president — Mr N.K. PROTEST RALLY: Activists of UT Powermen Union, Chandigarh, observed protest for two hours by walking out of their offices on Tuesday. They held protest rallies at electricity offices against the decision of the Punjab Government to table the Haldia Committee report.

OFFICE-BEARERS: The following have been appointed office-bearers of the Chandigarh unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Kashyap Maha Sabha: president — Mr Mewa Singh; secretary — Mr Prem Singh; and members — Mr Bua Dass, Mr Sardari Lal and Kulwant Singh.

MAN KILLED: Nardeshwar (50), an employee of the UT PWD, died after he was run over by a truck on the Burail Jail road here on Wednesday. The truck driver, Ranjit Singh, has been arrested and the vehicle impounded. Ranjit Singh was reversing the truck when the incident took place.

TWO HELD: The crime branch of the police arrested two persons, including a woman, from different parts of the city and seized 12 gram of smack from their possession here on Wednesday. Kamla, a resident of Dadu Majra Colony, was allegedly held with 10 gram of smack from her shop in the colony. While Bhupiner Kumar, alias Vicky, was held from Sector 45 and 2 gram of smack was seized from his possession, said police sources.

HONOURED: “Telented folk dancers” Amrinder Singh Sidhu and Karandeep Singh Sidhu, popularly known as Sidhu Brothers, have been presented the award of honour by CIPA. They were honoured by Ms Usha Mahajan, Principal of Government Polytechnic College for Women at a dance competition.

HARYANA

YAMUNANAGAR
CAMPAIGN: The district administration will administer anti-polio drops to 1.57 lakh children up to the age of five under the first phase of the pulse polio immunisation campaign beginning on April 6 at 750 centres across the district. Mr Vijayendra Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, informed this here on Tuesday.

BIJLI NIGAM: The Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam, Yamunanagar, will spend Rs 3554 lakh for setting up two new substations. Besides this the nigam will also spend Rs 591 lakh on the augmentation of eight substations in the district. A sum of Rs 5704.98 lakh had already been spent on the installation of new transformers, metre service connections and distribution lines in the past three years. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Vijayendra Kumar, disclosed this here on Tuesday.

HIMACHAL PRADESH

BILASPUR
DEPUTATION: Led by Mr Devesh Chandel, prominent BJP leader and former Gram Panchayat President of Chandpur, near here, a deputation of BJP leaders met Superintendent of Police here on Tuesday evening and presented him a memorandum, demanding strict action against all those who took law into their hands and broke windowpanes of a private bus which belonged to Mr Joginderpal, BJP Shakati Kendra president of Chandpur.

CHAMBA
THREE CONVICTED: Mr V.K. Gupta, Sessions Judge, Chamba, has sentenced Devi Singh under Sections 363, 366 and 376, Puran Chand under Section 376 and Pritho under Section 368 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He ordered Devi Singh and Puran Chand to undergo rigorous imprisonment for seven years each and to pay a fine of Rs 8,000 and Rs 3,000, respectively. The third accused has been ordered to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of one year with a fine of Rs 2,000.

NURPUR
BURGLARY: Burglars broke into a godown of HP Food and Civil Supplies Corporation at Surajpur (lower) under the Indora police station on Tuesday and decamped with 82 LPG cylinders of Indane. The police, which has registered a case under Sections 380 and 457 of the IPC, said 48 out of 82 stolen cylinders were refills.

UNA
LIFE TERM: Mr K.L. Sharma, Additional Sessions Judge, Una, on Monday convicted Gopal Singh, son of Kapil Dev, a resident of Nangal Kalan village, for murdering Niranjan Singh and sentenced him to life prisonment and fined him Rs 20,000. According to the prosecution, a land dispute between the two led to the crime.
