VC’s efforts to nurse MDU back to health bear fruit
Jatinder Sharma

Rohtak, March 27
When Maj-Gen (Retd)Bhim Singh Suhag joined Maharshi Dayanand University as its Vice-Chancellor on June 2000, the university was passing through a “multifaceted crisis”. The crisis was so severe that the university had to take loan from the bank against Employees Provident Fund (EPF) accounts in order to pay the salary to its employees. Clearly, the university was at standstill. Construction activities had been stopped and teaching departments were starving of funds.

However, Maj-Gen (Retd) Bhim Singh Suhag, took up the challenge to nurse the university back to health.

Soon, to everyone’s surprise, the university had surplus funds. Expansion work to increase the infrastructure in the university began. Soon, the construction of multi-crore university auditorium restarted after a gap of seven years. Three hostels, two for boys and one for girls have been constructed. The construction of multi-purpose gymnasium has been started. The building of the Directorate of Distance Education stand completed with a state-of-the-art conference hall.

The Physics block was extended and the library building of the Law Department is under construction. An excellent language lab has also been constructed.

During the current year, the university has decided to construct a community centre and about one hundred houses for its employees. The much awaited sports complex is also being developed. On the environmental front, about 26,000 trees have been planted on the university campus. On the academic side, during the tenure of Maj-Gen (Retd) Suhag, the University established its National Law College at Gurgaon.

And significantly, for its regional centre at Rewari, the University has obtained 78 acres of land near village Lisana, 3 km from Rewari on the Rewari-Jhajjar road. It is believed the construction work on this campus would start soon.

The university submitted a five-volume report to the National Assessment and Accreditation Council in 2002 so as to get itself accredited. A team of the Council visited the university in February. The Council found its course content updated as per the UGC curricula.

M.Sc courses in Biotechnology, Genetics and Biochemistry were started. A course in Counselling and Guidance was also started.

Besides these, a number of information technology and computer courses were also started through distance education mode. Several courses in Physical Education were also started.

During the course of the last two years, the university has acquired a universal character. Scholars from abroad, including USA, Germany, Australia and Korea have been visiting the university.

The members of the teaching faculty of the university have also visited various countries including USA, France, UK, Australia and Korea for academic work.

Obviously, these became possible mainly due to the strong financial position of the University and the vision of the vice-chancellor. The University is establishing an advanced Research Centre on Ayurveda and Biotechnology in collaboration with the Korean Institute of Energy Research.

Moreover, after continuous efforts for about 12 years, the University has also established the Institute of Development Studies as an advanced autonomous research centre. Master of Pharmacy courses are to be started in the coming academic session.

Certainly, the vice-chancellor, Maj-Gen Suhag should get the credit for the turn around. Peace on the campus, with academic schedule on time and strong financial position of the university shows that the vice-chancellor has been able to put the university back on track.

ARTSCAPE
A painting exhibition in tune with Mother Nature
Garima Pant

An exhibition of paintings titled ‘In Tune With Mother Earth, Not Cain’ by artist Arshad Ameen, that was held at the Lalit Kala Academy, ended this week. He expressed nature in its diverse forms at their very best. For instance, one of his works titled ‘The Roaring Clouds’ truly justify the title given to it. He has not only used the usual colours associated with nature and greenery, but has added a whole new range of hues and shades to the entire theme. He has certain realism in his works and all appears very calmly and gently done.

A master of fine arts, this Jamia student has won the ‘Best Painting Award’ at the “Kalam Festival,” organised by the Jamia Milia Islamia University in 1995.

He has been a part of various groups and solo shows in Delhi and Lucknow and has participated in various exhibitions across the nation. His paintings are a part of the U.P. Lalit Kala Academy, Lucknow and the Academy in New Delhi, U.S.A, Germany, Canada, Dubai and Singapore.

Nature in full bloom

An exposition of paintings by R.K Saini and G.B.L. Bhatnagar was organised at the Lalit Kala Academy. The subtle, yet emphatic works of both the artists leave a stamp on the viewers. The use of colours has been done with notable precision and finesse. The colours blend with each other in totality, giving all the works their best appearance. Nature has been presented in its full bloom and the entire emphasis has been given to it.

R. K Saini has given more focus to nature and its surroundings and whatever human forms that have been portrayed, has been given the least bit of importance.

The other artist, G.B.L.Bhatnagar, is a very experienced and learned. He has done research work in Indian miniature painting in 1961 from Shantiniketan, Calcutta. He says “I work in the field of art as an artist for the sake of art and not as a commercial one. I take all my inspiration from nature. I believe that nature is all- important and man is a small part of nature. Every work has a meaning to it”. He has been a participant in various state, national and international level exhibitions.

Painting a perfect relationship

An exhibition of drawings and paintings by Suhrid Mukhopadhayay on environment and human relations was organised at the Lalit Kala Academy.

His works present a perfect example of human relations in their utmost simplicity. For instance, his painting titled ‘Love’ shows the perfect relationship between a child and his parents. The ‘love filled eyes’ of the parents speaks volumes about their affection for the child. His paintings are founded on the classical Indian style. They range from nature landscapes to biographical sketches of Shri Chaitanya and the now-famous 75 graphic design play cards at Bhartiyam.

His works make us look at life and participate in its simple wonders. His water colour filled canvasses are full of people and nature as seen by the eyes of a common man, but here one can see them through the artists’ eyes. His works adorn the personal collections of art connoisseurs around the world including India, Japan, Germany and the UK.

THE ACHIEVERS
‘Divine inspiration makes him sing’
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 27
Despite no formal training in music, Swami Budhiraja has carved a niche for himself in the field of devotional music. The singer, who is also a lyricist and a composer to boot, attributes his success to the Goddess Durga who, he claims, inspired him to sing.

According to Budhiraja, “I lived close to a temple. When the bells in the temple would toll, I would feel drawn to the music and this eventually inspired me to pen down lyrics praising Goddess Durga.”

Budhiraja has already released two albums and is working on three more. His albums titled ‘Meri Maiyya Badi Great Hai’ and ‘Naukar Maiya Ka’ have received encouraging response and he has been signed by the T-Series for their future launches.

“Unlike other artistes who want to make inroads into playback singing by singing devotional songs, I want to continue with the devotional genre,” says Budhiraja.

The singer’s success has also been attributed to the fact that his compositions are original, unlike the others, which are based on film music.

His originality and devotion saw him through during his days of struggle. Budhiraja was groomed by Pandit Kailash Chand of Meerut. However, it is the Goddess who remains not just the inspiration but also the first teacher.

In his own words, “the bells in the Devi’s temple moved me so much that I decided to dedicate myself to devotional singing.”

The singer, who was motivated by Pandit Mohan Lal Sharma to write songs devoted to the divine, insists on singing only those songs, which have been penned by him.
