Probe demanded into erratic canal water supply Sonepat, March 25 In a joint memorandum sent to the Chief Minister, Mr Om Parkash Chautala, a copy of which was released to the press here, they also expressed their grave concern over the unsatisfactory working of this division and demanded the immediate “suspension of the Executive Engineer, the SDOs and other subordinate officials responsible for the scarcity of canal water” even during the rotation period. They also demanded the immediate transfer of these officials so as to ensure an independent and impartial inquiry into the “scandalous” working of this division. The memorandum blamed the officials of this division for not cleaning the canals and distributaries properly despite the clear instructions issued by the Chief Minister and allocation of funds for this purpose. It alleged that the desilting and deweeding operations carried out occasionally by the officials were “merely an eye wash” as the farmers, whose fields are situated at the tail-end villages, had been facing shortage of canal water for irrigation purposes and consequently suffering huge financial losses. The memorandum also pointed out that the standing wheat crop needed immediate supply of canal water, which is not available at this stage. As a result, the standing wheat crop is likely to be adversely affected in the absence of canal water. The memorandum also demanded effective check on increasing incident of canal water thefts and stern action against unscrupulous farmers. |
