60-yr-old wife of trader rescued after 18 days in captivity
New Delhi, February 23
In a joint operation conducted by the Delhi Police Crime Branch, Rajasthan Police and intelligence agencies, 60-year-old Sumedha Durlabhji, wife of Rashmikant Durlabhji, a prominent jewellery trader and exporter of Jaipur, was rescued from the clutches of a seven-member gang of abductors in Faridabad this morning.

MTNL to pick up tab for deficiency in service
New Delhi, February 23
A Delhi Consumer court has ordered the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited to pay a total of Rs 10,000 in three separate cases for being deficient in service by wrongfully disconnecting telephones and for not repairing the equipment despite repeated complaints.

Man immolates self, clasps lover in fiery embrace

A man set himself ablaze in front of the husband of his paramour. Then, in desperation, he clutched his paramour in a fiery embrace. While the lover, Billu, succumbed to his injuries, the woman, Kanchan, is battling for her life with 60 per cent burns in Sardar Vallabhai Patel Hospital on the medical college campus here.

‘Truant’ railway staff encourage ticketless travel
Sonepat, February 23
The Sonepat railway station is fast turning into a haven for ticketless passengers, thanks to the failure of the ticket collectors to check passengers properly. According to a report, the Railways has appointed three ticket collectors at this station but none of them turn up at the railway gates when the trains arrive. 

Scheme to help farmers build godowns in Haryana villages
Sonepat, February 23
The central government has drawn up a Rural Foodgrains Godown Scheme for stocking grains in the villages of Haryana. This was stated by Deputy Commissioner Balwan Singh while speaking at a seminar organised jointly by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra and Marketing and Inspection Directorate on the premises of the office of the Additional Deputy Commissioner here yesterday.

Bypass in Gohana to link national highways: CM

Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala today announced the construction of a bypass in Gohana town. The bypass would link the national and state highways with Rohtak, Bhiwani, Jind, Panipat and also Sonepat district headquarters.

Former Prime Minister V P Singh has called upon the people to observe Garib Diwas (poor’s day) on March 27. Green stretches of rolling grass, tall graceful trees and colourful flowers in full bloom was the picture at the XVI Garden Tourism Festival 2003 that concluded today at the Garden of Five Senses, Said-ul-Ajaib (south of Saket). The festival organised by DTTDC was a big success as visitors thronged the venue to touch, smell, see, hear and even taste nature.
The XVI Garden Tourism Festival, a three-day bonanza was not only a riot of colours with thousands of flowers on display but also had a grand show of plants, hanging baskets, cacti and succulents, garden equipment and accessories. The show brought together a number of horticulture societies, local bodies, corporate houses, hotels etc.

Maid stabbed, strangulated
New Delhi, February 23
A 20-year-old domestic maid was found murdered with stab wounds and strangulation marks in Patel Nagar this evening. The victim, Santosh Mukhiya, was a caretaker of the house while the owner Chandramohan Malhotra (60) stays in Mumbai with his family.

FII urges steel producers not to hike prices
New Delhi, February 23
Federation of Industries of India has appealed to all steel producers not to increase the prices to save the secondary sector from collapse. At a meeting organised with the senior officials of Steel Authority of India Ltd in Delhi, FII urged them not to increase the prices of HR Coil at least during March-April, 2003.
