Mufti promises more parking lots
Tribune News Service

Jammu, February 18
Following the demolition drive in the town, the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, is on a beautifying spree of Jammu city by ordering the creation of parking lots for more than 1,000 cars, shopping mall with Tawi river front development parks, walkways and multi-storeyed parking-cum-commercial complexes. These were among several decisions taken by the Mufti during his three-hour-long tour of Jammu city yesterday.

Keen to improve the city environs and remove traffic congestion, the Mufti accompanied by the Deputy Chief Minister, Mr Mangat Ram Sharma, the Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Mr Ghulam Hussan Mir, the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Mr Abdul Majid Wani, local MLAs, Mr Yogesh Sawhney and Mr Raman Bhalla, general secretary, PDP, Mr Ved Mahajan and a team of senior officers, visited several parts of the old city despite inclement weather and took stock of civil amenities and announced on the spot decision after interacting with locals and officers concerned.

Giving major thrust to decongest the old city, the Chief Minister visited the city police station, super bazar, excise complex and central basic high school where an integrated parking lot would be created for about 500 vehicles in two phases. In the first phase, the area of existing city police station and super bazar would be taken up where a two tier parking lot would be created.

In the second phase, the excise complex and central basic high school would be taken up. However, the school building would be remodelled with adequate playfield and proper landscaping. The existing police station would be shifted to doctors’ lane near secretariat.

The second major project to create parking lot was identified at doctors’ lane where a three-tier parking space would be created for about 200 vehicles. Accommodation in flats would be provided to the medical staff presently living in the area. The entire area would be redeveloped to make best use of the available space with proper landscaping. Both these projects would be taken up by the Jammu Development Authority.

At parade, the Chief Minister asked officers to beautify the area between Brahman Sabha and the Power Development office which would be developed as a square. The municipality has also a proposal to go in for organised parking on one side.

At Indira Chowk, the Mufti was informed about Jammu Municipality’s proposal to set up a Rs 14-crore eight-storeyed parking-cum-commercial complex. The first four floors would be used for parking while the top four floors would be used for commercial purposes to generate income. The existing allottees in the area would be accommodated in the complex. A self-financing project, it would provide parking space for 250 cars.

At Purani Mandi, the Chief Minister interacted with shopkeepers and local residents and ordered the relocation of existing transformer which has occupied a substantial part of the existing park within a fortnight. The area would be developed in such a way that people get facilities of park and parking.

At Raj Tilak road, the Chief Minister assured the shopkeepers that proper drainage would be provided to check the overflow of drains. He, however, told the shopkeepers that nobody should encroach the drains which also contributed to their overflow.
