300 doctors, patients pledge to donate organs
Tripti Nath

About 300 persons, including doctors, nurses, patients and their attendants pledged to donate their organs during a six-day awareness programme, which concluded at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital here on Saturday. The awareness drive was organised by the Human Organ Procurenent Education (HOPE) Trust, a two-year-old voluntary organisation founded by lawyer and liver recipient, Rani Jethmalani.

The awareness programme was preceded by the first national consensus symposium on liver transplantation and cadaveric organ donation organised by the hospital.

Ms Jethmalani addressed about 50 consultants of the hospital on the legal aspects of organ donation. The Programme Coordinator of HOPE Trust, Ms Garima Midha, addressed the nurses, registrars and junior doctors while the ICU in-charge in the hospital, Dr S.C. Sharma spoke on the concept of brain death and protocols followed in organ donation.

In his message before the conference, Dr K.C. Mahajan, Chairman, Liver Transplant Task Force, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said, “The shortage of donor organs remains the bottleneck in setting up well-developed transplant programmes in our country. Despite the fact that the brain-stem death law was enacted in 1995, it is appalling to note that the concept of organ donation remains non-existent in our country.”

Dr Sharma expressed the hope that the “intermixing of thought and learning from each other’s limitations will certainly be a step forward towards building several successful transplant centres in the country.”

Prominent surgical gastro-enterologists and liver transplant surgeons who participated in the conference were Dr Sameeran Nundy, Head of the Department of Surgical Gastro-enterology,

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Dr P. Sahani from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr Rajan Saxena from Sanjay Gandhi PGI, Lucknow besides kidney transplant surgeons, Dr H. Jauhari from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and Dr S. Shroff from Chennai
