12 vehicles torched during bandh
Santosh Jha

Patna, February 8
At least 12 vehicles were damaged, two of them government buses and two police cars, by angry agitators in the Bihar capital during a violent Patna bandh on Saturday forcing the police to use lathis and burst tear gas shells.

The bandh call was given by students’ organisations and Opposition parties, including the NDA, against the deteriorating law and order in the state and the killing of an Army soldier in a fake encounter by the state police on Tuesday.

The rioters stopped two government buses carrying political leaders, who were taken under preventive detention, smashed their window glasses and finally torched them in front of a police station.

At least 20 political activists held captive in the two buses were injured as stones and glass pieces hit them in the mob vandalism. The angry mob clashed with the police and went on rioting, damaging many private vehicles and public property.

Student activists damaged two police cars as they sped through the area where they had put road blockade by burning tyres. The front window shields of the two cars were damaged in stone throwing. The police lathi-charged protesters and burst tear gas shells to control the situations.

The students organisations like the All India Students’ Association, the Revolutionary Youth Association and the students’ wing of the CPI-ML had called for a ‘chakka jam’ throughout the state.

Leaders of the NDA staged a dharna at the Dak Bunglow crossing and courted arrests. Police sources said 200 political activists and leaders, including a Samata Party parliamentarian, were arrested. The state capital was virtually turned into a garrison as the administration had deputed the anti-riot police with fire engines on duty to control the arson. Cops were also deputed on rooftops as on previous occasions mob had thrown stones on them from rooftops.

The mob also damaged at least six private vehicles to force public out of the streets. The main Bailey Road was littered with burning tyres and smashed glasses of vehicles. The vehicles kept of the roads and all shop owners put up their shutters.

Left allies slam CM over Nadia incident
Subhrangshu Gupta

Kolkata, February 8
The three major Left partners— the CPI, the RSP and Forward Bloc — have come out in the open strongly criticising the Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadev Bhattacharjee, for his alleged mishandling of the Home Department.

They have demanded that the Home portfolio be handed over to another minister who would be exclusively looking after the department. The demand which was rejected on Thursday, has again been raised in the wake of looting incident on the highway, near Nadia township in South Bengal last night.

According to the latest report reached at Writers Building, the incident occurred when an armed gang attacked two buses of a marriage party bound for Ranaghat. The buses were stopped and women gang-raped in front of other members.

The police arrested 12 persons including the CPM local zonal committee member, Mr Subal Bagchi, and the panchayat pradhan of Shalidul Karigar. The incident evoked much uproar in the Left Front and the Opposition parties.

The Trinamool Congress leader, Ms Mamata Banerjee, sent an urgent message to the Home Minister, Mr L.K.Advani, demanding the Centre’s intervention in the state’s law and order situation. She alleged that the police had failed to function independently.

Mr Somen Mitra said after the incident Mr Bhattacharjee had no moral right to be in the chair.

On the other hand, the RSP minister, Mr Amar Chowdhury ( in charge of the PWD) openly criticised the CPM for its alleged involvement in the incident.

Mr Ashoke Ghosh said the incident had once again justified their demand for handing over the Home portfolio to some other person.

The CPI state secretary, Mr Monju Majumdar, also reiterated His demand for transferring the Home portfolio to an Independent minister.
