Poonam is best athlete

Ludhiana, February 8
Poonam, a student of BA (II), and Jyoti Sharma of BA (III) were adjudged the best athlete and the best player respectively in the 34th annual athletics meet of SDP College for Women held here today. Ms Sushil Gupta, Deputy Mayor, inaugurated the meet while Mr Rakesh Pandey, Minister for Stationery and Printing distributed the prizes. He announced a grant of Rs 1 lakh for the college on this occasion.

Earlier, Ms S Verma, the Principal of the college, read out a report listing the achievements of the students in the various sports meets. She singalled out Jyoti Sharma who represented India in the Indoor Cricket Tournament held in Wellington, New Zealand, in October last.

Results: long jump — Taru 1, Anita 2, Manpreet 3; high jump- Poonam 1, Kamlesh 2, Harpreet 3; shot-put — Kamlesh 1, Neha 2, Indu 3; discus-throw- Kamlesh 1, Sonia 2, Rimpi 3; and javelin-throw — Indu 1, Kamlesh 2, Ritu 3.

Fun race — Rimpy 1, Suman 2, Indu Bala 3; sack race- Rimpy Saini 1, Suman 2, Harpreet 3.

Jyoti Sharma and Poonam were declared sports president and sports secretary respectively, while the following were named outstanding players of the year — Kamlesh of BA (III), Jyoti of BA (III), Poonam of BA (II), Harpreet of BA (I) and Ritu of BA (I).

Sukhjit Kaur of Khalsa School, Ludhiana and Gurjyot Singh were declared fastest runners among girls and boys (under-16), respectively, in the Ludhiana District Annual Athletics Meet conducted at the Guru Nanak Stadium here today.

Gobindgarh school athletic meet

Mandi Gobindgarh, February 8
Gobindgarh Public School organised its 11th annual athletic meet here yesterday. About 650 athletes from the four houses of the school participated in different events.

Jai Deep Singh and Chandni Bansal were adjudged the best athletes among the seniors while Sukhmani Billing, Manjot Veer Singh and Harkamal Singh were declared as the best in the junior section. The coveted trophy for the best house was bagged by Nehru House and that of best march past was won by Patel House.

A large number of persons besides parents of students witnessed the Rajasthani dance, tiny tots, umbrella dance and junior children’s rhythmic exercise.

The president of the Gobindgarh Education and Social Welfare Trust inaugurated the function in the morning. Mr Chander Shekhar, SSP, Fatehgarh Sahib, was the chief guest at the closing ceremony. Mr D.P. Singh, ASP, Amloh, was also present on the occasion. Mr Bhadur Singh, Principal, welcomed the chief guest and highlighted the achievements of the students.

As many as 20 medals and mementoes were awarded to the winners. The chief guest lauded the school for its contribution in sports and advised the students to work hard. Mr R.P. Bhatia, Chairman, School Management Committee, Mr N.K. Khanna, Chairman, Management Institute, Mr Satparkash, Director, Mr Satdev Saggar, Mr M.S. Chahal, former Circle Education Officer and Mr Pawan Sharda were also present on the occasion.

Friends Club enter semifinal

Ludhiana, February 8
The Friends Club of Malerkotla scripted a 6-wicket victory against Mahajan Cricket Club, Ludhiana to book their berth in the semifinal match of the second Sabina Cup Cricket Tournament being organised by Shanti Tara College, at Ahmedgarh, here today.

In reply to Mahajan Club’s total of 118 runs scored in 12 overs, Friends Club made 119 runs for the loss of four wickets with the last ball to go.

Brief scores: Mahajan Club 118 all out (Gaurav 32, Rattan 32, Chandershekhar 4 for 18); Friends Club- 119 for 4 (Lalit 49)

In another match, the Double Deckor Club demolished the SFS Club by 62 runs. Batting first, the Double Deckor Club made 115 for 7 wickets and then shot out SFS Club at 53 runs.

In the third match, the Mahajan Master Club of Ludhiana defeated the Yongster Club of Ahmedgarh by 28 runs.
