PUDA notices to 883 violators of bylaws

Taking a tough stand against building bylaws violators, the Punjab Urban Development Authority, (PUDA) has issued notices to as many as 883 violators to ‘mend their ways or face stringent action’.

Can’t call cops, they haven’t paid bills
Doraha, February 1
As the telephone supply to the Payal police station and the Doraha police post has been off for the past more than a-month-and-a-half due to the non-payment of bills, townsfolk can’t call the police in emergency.

BSNL bills not on time
Ludhiana, February 1
Thousands of subscribers of the BSNL have been put to undue harassment and financial losses as they could not get bills in time. The subscribers had to collect the bills on their own and pay along with penalty. And a number of those who did not go to collect bills had to pay with their telephone services being disconnected.

Wrong report costs woman her life
Machhiwara, February 1
Mr Bahadur Singh had got his wife Raj Ravinderpal Kaur medically examined in 2000 at a nursing home for pain in her breast. Doctors said an operation would have to be performed and asked him to bring medicines for operation. After the operation, a sample was sent to Chandigarh and the report mentioned no features of cancer.

Conductor pushes out student from bus
Doraha, February 1
A bus conductor reportedly whistled and blocked the entry of a student who boarding the bus, making him fall. Jasbir Singh of Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, said after attending college he went to the bus stand where a state roadways bus had stopped. 

YC to gherao Vajpayee
Ludhiana, February 1
About 10,000 Youth Congress workers from Punjab are likely to participate in a rally to gherao the Prime Minister. The rally will be organised by the Indian Youth Congress on February 4 in New Delhi. The Pradesh Youth Congress president, Mr Devinder Singh Babbu and the senior vice-president, Mr Pawan Dewan, said the arrangements were being made for mobilising the workers.

The Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) has served an ultimatum till February 12 on the centre and the Punjab government that in case they fail to make payment for cane to the farmers at the rate of Rs 105 per quintal as announced by the government, the SAD (A) would jam trail and road traffic at the Phillaur bridge indefinitely .

A senior Akali leader and former president of the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Mr Jagdev Singh Talwandi, has criticised the remarks made by the RSS chief, Mr K.S. Sudarshan, in which he had reportedly described Sikhs as Hindus and said that Sikh gurus were propagating Hindu religion.

Govt indifferent to industry

The Bharatiya Janata Party, while condemning the exim form imposed by the state government, has said that the Congress government in Punjab appears to be completely indifferent to the ailing condition of trade and industry and is pursuing policies that would destroy the economy.

A seminar on animal nutrition was organised by a Holland company, Provimi Research and Nutrition, and its Indian partner, Vetcare, at Golden Grain Club here today.
Ruminant nutritionist Dr Karine of Holland and Dr V. Shrishar, animal nutritionist, addressed the gathering. Dr Karine told feed mill owners of the area that how in the developed countries balanced feed was being provided at lower price.

NCC cadet wins R-Day parade medal

Sixteen NCC cadets of Ludhiana who participated in the Republic Day parade at New Delhi were given a warm welcome at the local 3 Punjab Battalion, today.
Most of the cadets have decided to pursue their career with the Army. ‘‘We will serve the nation by joining the Army,’’ they said in unison when asked by mediapersons about their future plans.

The annual-day celebrations and prize-distribution function of St Bawra Public High School were organised in Guru Nanak Bhavan here today. Dr Inderpal Singh, a former Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University of Amritsar, was the chief guest. A cultural function was presented by students of the school.

21 honoured for social service

At a function held at Ramgarhia Girls College, the Shaheed Memorial Seva Society honoured 21 persons for service to the society. Mrs Inderjit Kaur Gill Vashist, Principal of Government College for Women, lighted the traditional lamp. Those honoured were awarded with a trophy and a shawl.

Lok Adalats settle 330 cases

Ludhiana, February 1
As many as 330 cases involving an amount of Rs 50,59,396 pertaining to co-operative credit institutions were settled in five Special Lok Adalats organised here today. A total of 382 cases were placed before the Lok Adalats. The District Legal Services Authority organised the Lok Adalats under the supervision of its Chairman, Mr Baldev Singh, District and Sessions Judge, with the active participation of the Deputy Registrar, Co-operative Department .

PNB’s inter-region cultural meet opens
Ludhiana, February 1
Mr U.S. Bhargava, General Manager, Punjab National Bank, Punjab zone, inaugurated the 20th PNB inter-region cultural meet here today in which about 130 participants from eight regions of Punjab Zone participated. Competitors participated in items like light vocal-solo, classical vocal-solo, classical instrumental (a) tal and b) string, western classical instrumental, rare and innovative music (instrumental) and group song. Competitions in items like one-act play.

Junk food causing hypertension among kids

There is bad news for urban school going children in the district with junk food taking a toll on their health. A survey conducted on school children has revealed high presence of hypertension and obesity. Shocking as it may sound, the prevalence of hypertension and obesity among Ludhiana children is almost double of that found among similar age groups in any urban population all over country.

Challenges in checking female foeticide
Ludhiana, February 1
In 2001, 66,109 cases of female foeticide or sex selective abortion were reported in the country, whereas in 2000, the number was 69,298. More than 6,21,790 cases of female foeticide were reported in the country in the last decade. This data was given by Ms Rupan Deol Bajaj, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare of Punjab, at a state-level seminar on female foeticide at Guru Nanak Bhavan here yesterday.

Hospital for Gujarat quake victims

The IMA Ludhiana has congratulated former national president of the IMA, Dr Ketan Desai for getting a hospital constructed for the benefit of earthquake victims. The IMA has constructed a hospital at Gandhidham and it will be handed over to the Gujarat Government tomorrow. Mr I.K. Jadeja, the Health Minister of Gujarat will inaugurate the hospital.

Sahil is best athlete
Ludhiana, February 1
Sahil Diwedi, a student of class VIII, emerged winner in five events and was adjudged the best athlete in the inter-house competition during the annual sports meet of the Bhartiya Vidya Mandir, Kitchlu Nagar here today. Ramman House bagged the running trophy.

The Ludhiana District Amateur Boxing Association has elected new office-bearers, according to Mr G.S. Saro, honorary secretary of the Punjab Amateur Boxing Association. He has said this in a letter issued here today by boxing coach and technical adviser of the association, Mr J.S. Garewal.
