WHO workshop at GMCH

Chandigarh, February 1
A three-day WHO training workshop on disability prevention and rehabilitation, organised by the Department of Orthopedics was inaugurated at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), here today.

In his inaugural address, Dr S.K. Srivastava, Additional Director General, Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said it was not possible to achieve economic development without providing proper health infrastructure.

He appreciated the efforts made by the GMCH, in the field of disability prevention and rehabilitation.

The Head of the Orthopedics Department and Medical Superintendent, Dr Raj Bahadur, highlighted the important role that paramedics play between the hospital and society.

He said the media and political leaders could play an important role by highlighting the problem.

Dr H.C. Goyal, from the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi, spoke on the concessions and facilities provided to disabled persons under the Persons with Disabilities Act (PWD Act 1995).

School that excels in sports

Sanjay Public Senior Secondary School, Sector-44, has established itself as one of the premier institutes in the city, where more emphasis is laid on sports. Last year the school excelled in handball, judo, wrestling, hockey, cricket and football.

Mr T.R. Sethi, Chairman, Sanjay Public School, said it bagged the second position in under 19 inter school meet. Rohit, Gurpreet, Amrit Pal and Gurjot Singh represented UT schools team in the National School Games at Delhi. Mr Sethi said the school had approached the Sports Authority of India for appointing a handball coach.

Mr Sethi added that our hockey team also won the CBSE National Hockey Meet at Bangalore while in North Zone under 19 meet, it won the Cluster XI meet. Harpreet Singh, Shamsher Singh and Jasbir Singh also represented UT in the National School Games.

Three players of the school, Arun Rai, Gauravdeep and Saru Kanwar represented UT in the National School Games in under 16 category. It also bagged second position in the St John’s Edmund Rice Cricket meet.

Five of its wrestlers Kanwar Baljit Singh, Sanjeet Singh, Dharminder, Satish and Sunil also donned national colours.

Mr Sethi said seven judokas of the school were part of the Chandigarh team for the nationals.

Eight soccer players of the school represented UT in the National School Games held at Madhya Pradesh. One player was part of the under 16 UT football team.

The school bagged the Cluster XI North Zone under 19 and under 16 meet.

Irina launches campaign

Chandigarh, February 1
A campaign, “I cheer for India”, was today launched by Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC). The float was inaugurated by India’s leading lady golfer Irina Brar from the Sector 9 branch of the HSBC. It passed through prominent locations like Panjab University, Madhya Marg, Sector 17, 22, 35 and Sukhna lake.

The bank had earlier sponsored the Indian blind cricket team for the World Cup Cricket for Blind held in Chennai last year.

According to a press noted, the cities to be covered by the road show include Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Ludhiana.

Tennis meet

Izreek Randhawa of India moved to the second round of the qualifying section in the ITF Junior Tennis Meet at Tennis Stadium, Sector 10.

Other players who sailed to the next round of the boys section are: Sekiguchi Ryo (Japan), Gautham Samrath (India), Vijay Sunder Natarajan (India), Sumit Prakash Gupta (India), Vivek Reddy (India), Vivek Shokeen (India), Eduard Khan of (Uzbekistan), I. Moshike (Israel), Varun Walia (India), Roy Amal (Bangladesh), Hezl Ravid (Israel), Amir Weintaub (Israel), Alamgir Hussain (Bangladesh) and Wrik Ganguly (India).

Earlier, the today’s matches started late due to rain.
