Students booked for sexual harassment

Finally taking action against the 16 accused in the sexual harassment case of a women lecturer of Government College for Boys, the local police today registered a case against all 16 following an inquiry by a senior police officer that indicted them.

Fake currency: coop bank director held
Ahmedgarh, January 31
The police has arrested a director of a cooperative bank who had evaded arrest on January 1 when his car was intercepted by a police party in Hoshiarpur district and three youths were nabbed with counterfeit currency notes.

The rustic charm of this small and sleepy hamlet bowled over eight students from Michigan State University, USA, who are guests of the Home Science Department of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). In India for 12 weeks as a part of their practical training in their respective fields before completing their postgraduation, they will tour various parts of the state and will also pay a visit to the Golden Temple.

Blast in car disrupts traffic
Ludhiana, January 31
A major traffic jam occurred at the Ferozepore road opposite Verka Milk Plant this evening when a blast took place in a Black Cielo car. The vehicle caught fire but the driver managed to escape just in time. he escaped with minor injuries.

Municipal workers elect body
Ludhiana, January 31
At its emergency meeting here, the Municipal Karamchari Dal (MKD) led by Mr Vijay Danav condemned the state government for refusing to recruit the next of the kin of employees who died in service.

Uttaranchal seeks investment from Punjab
Ludhiana, January 31
The Uttaranchal Governor, Mr Sudarshan Agarwal, has invited Punjab to set up industrial units in the hill state by offering them red tape-free environment and other facilities.

DBA honours Uttaranchal Governor
Ludhiana, January 31
The Uttaranchal Governor, Mr Sudershan Aggarwal, was honoured by the District Bar Association at an impressive function organised in the Ludhiana Club here today. He was a member of the Bar Association of Ludhiana in 1955.

Staff allege non-payment of wages
Ludhiana, January 31
At least 600 workers of Punjab Woolcombers allege non-payment of salaries from October 2002 as a result of which their family members were virtually starving. In order to press upon the management for early payment of arrears, the workers will hold a demonstration in the city.

Rs 1 lakh stolen from gurdwara
Ludhiana, January 31
Rs 1 lakh were allegedly stolen from Gurdwara Gaughat Patshahi Pehli in the police station division no 3 last night. The theft came to light today when Dalip Singh, a watchman of the gurdwara, found the back door open whereas the front door was locked from inside. Two cash collection boxes were found broken. Some swords were also found missing, one of which was later found by the police from a field, about 200 metres, away. A case has been registered.

4 booked for trespass

The Sadar police has registered a case against four persons under the Arms Act and other Sections for forcibly entering the house of Avtar Singh, a resident of Ghurala village and a sugarcane supervisor, posted at Nahar Sugar Mill, Amloh.

Farmers asked to adopt contract farming
Jagraon, January 31
A camp was held here today in which farmers were educated and encouraged to adopt alternative crops under contract farming. The district has the distinction of achieving the highest acreage under contract farming during the season. Sunflower and spring maize have been promoted as spring crops by the Punjab Agro, which is the nodal department for this purpose.

KVM wins trophy in dance competition
Ludhiana, January 31
Eight teams from different schools participated in the Sahodya dance competition held today at Kundan Vidya Mandir (KVM). The Principal, Ms Neena Khanna, welcomed the chief guest, Ms Sunil Aggarwal, wife of Mr Anurag Aggarwal, Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana, and the members of the school Managing Committee.

Dhanwantri Award for Dr Sachar
Ludhiana, January 31
Dr R.K. Sachar, Professor in the Department of Community Medicine, has been awarded the prestigious Dhanwantri Oration Award by the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM). He will deliver the oration at J.N. Medical College at Belgaum in Karnataka on February 6 during the annual conference of the association.

Rana Club win cricket tourney
Ludhiana, January 31
Jaswinder (74) and Mandeep (57) enabled Rana Club to register an easy 66-run victory over Double Deckor Club and clinch the cup in the Maya Devi Ahuja Memorial cricket tournament held at the Chandigarh road, Sector 32 ground here today.

Kabaddi meet postponed
Ludhiana, January 31
The 6th International Lodhi Kabaddi Cup Tournament that was to begin at the Guru Nanak Stadium here yesterday was called off due to rain. A large number of spectators from all over the state had converged here to witness kabaddi matches but the weather played havoc and they had to return disappointed.
