Rainfall: Rain or snow has occurred at most places in Himachal Pradesh and at many places in Jammu and Kashmir and Uttaranchal. Rain or thundershowers have occurred at most places in east Uttar Pradesh and at a few places in Haryana, Punjab and west Uttar Pradesh. Weather was mainly dry in the rest of the region. The chief amounts of precipitation in cms are: Haryana: Chandigarh 8 and Ambala, Naraingarh and Sonepat 1 each; Himachal Pradesh: Dharamsala and Sunibhajji 3 each, Arki, Kahu, Karsog, Nadaun, Nahan, Pandoh, Solan, Sujanpurtira and Theog 2 each and Bhanjar, Bhuntar, Berthin, Barsar, Dehragopipur, Ghamroor, Guler, Kasol, Kandaghat, Rampur Bushar, Rajgarh, Shimla and Una 1 each; Jammu and Kashmir: Srinagar 1, Punjab: Rajpura 2 and Adampur and Ropar 1 each, East Uttar Pradesh: Lucknow 2 and Bahraich and Gorakhpur 1 each; West Uttar Pradesh: Bareilly and Hindon 1 each and Uttaranchal: Dehra Dun, Pantnagar and Tehri 1 each.

Snowfall report (cms): Himachal Pradesh: Dhundhi 75, Solangnala 46, Patsio 17 and Bhang 9. Chandigarh and Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) reported hailstorms.

Temperatures: Past 24 hours change: Minimum temperatures fell appreciably in PUnjab, west Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal, fell in Haryana and changed little elsewhere. Departures: They were appreciably above normal in Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan, above normal in Himachal Pradesh and east Uttar Pradesh and normal in the rest of the region.

The lowest temperature in the plains was 5.0C recorded at Amritsar and Adampur (Punjab).

Forecast valid until the morning of January 31: Rain or snow will occur at many places in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttaranchal. Rain or thundershowers will occur at many places in east Uttar Pradesh, at a few places in west Uttar Pradesh and at isolated places in the rest of the region.

Heavy rainfall warning: Heavy rain or snow is likely at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttaranchal during the next 48 hours.

Forecast for Delhi and neighbourhood valid until the morning of January 31: Partly cloudy sky. Mist in the morning. Possibility of light rain/thundershowers in some areas towards afternoon/ evening. Minimum temperature will be around 8° C.

Farmers weather bulletin for Delhi, forecast valid until the morning of January 31: Light rain is likely at a few places.

Outlook for the subsequent two days: No large change.

Cold wave intensifies in hill states

Chandigarh, January 29
The cold wave once again tightened its noose in most of the north-west region, following widespread snow and rain in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh and isolated rain in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi since Monday night. Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali were virtually deluged by 70 mm of rainfall, accompanied by thunder squalls and hailstorms in 84.8 mm of rainfall since Tuesday morning.

Ludhiana and Patiala received 0.2 mm and 5.4 mm rainfall during the past 24 hours.

Ambala Cantonment and City reported 8.5 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours till 8.30 a.m. today, while Rohtak recorded just 0.8 mm rainfall.

The Weather Bureau here attributed the welcome snow and rains to the western disturbances moving across J and K and the neighbourhood. The western disturbances are likely to cause renewed spells of rain or snow in J and K and Himachal Pradesh and isolated rains in Punjab while rest of the region would remain mainly dry over the next 48 hours.

A report from Shimla said the people greeted bright sunshine to ward off spine curdling cold following 13.3 mm rainfall and snow last night. Upper areas of Shimla district, including tourist resorts of Wildflower Hall, Kufri, Naldehra and Narkanda too reported snowfall. Mashobra recorded 10.2 cm and 22 mm rainfall.

The entire tribal belt had moderate to heavy snowfall. Dhundi and Solang Nullah were lashed by heaviest snowfall of 75 cm and 46 cm, respectively. Keylong, headquarters of tribal Lahaul Spiti district, and Rekong Peo, headquarters of Kinnaur district, received 22 cm and 20 cm snow respectively. Patsio reported 17 cm and Bhang Manali 09.00 cm snowfall, respectively.

Cold wave conditions renewed in Kulu and Kangra valleys following heavy snowfall on mighty Rohtang Pass and picturesque Dhauladhar ranges. Surrounding hills of Kulu and Manali were also lashed by snow and rain bringing a sharp fall in the temperature.

The Sutlej-Beas catchment areas in HP reported widespread rain. Sunni (26.00 mm), Sujanpur Tira (23.00 mm), Kahu (22.5 mm), Nadaun (18.5mm), Pandoh (18.00 mm) were among the main stations reporting rain.

Among other places in the state to receive rain were Bhuntar (13.1 mm), Dharamsala (24.8 mm), Nahan (19 mm), Una (8.2 mm), Rampur (9.8 mm), Kasol (12.2 mm) and Guler (9.2 mm).

Srinagar in J & K was lashed by 12.3 mm of rainfall, but the minimum increased four degrees above normal at 1.9°C. Jammu also recorded an above normal low at 9.7°C. Snowfall was also reported from Gulmarg (47 cm), Drass (16 cm), Kanzalwan (59 cm) and Banihal area (17 cm) of Jammu and Kashmir during the past 24 hours.

The Snow Avalanche Study Establishment has issued a “low danger warning” due to avalanches in higher reaches above 2500 mt altitude in Himachal, J&K and Uttaranchal. The people in the avalance-prone areas in these states have been warned against venturing out during the next 24 hours. PTI, UNI
