State economy back on rails, says Lal Singh; unfurls National Flag

While stating that the state economy was back on rails, the Finance Minister, Punjab, Mr Lal Singh, yesterday announced that the government would distribute the declared bonus on paddy to the farmers within next 15 days. He was speaking at a district-level Republic Day Function organised at the Government College for Boys here.

Thrasher victims get cheques

Republic Day celebrations were held at New Grain Market and Mr Amarjit Singh Shahi, SDM, unfurled the Tricolour. NCC cadets took part in a march-past and the police contingent saluted the flag. Schoolchildren presented a cultural programme.

The general house meeting of the municipal corporation to be held here tomorrow is expected to be stormy, as there is resentment among a section of councillors over alleged discrimination in execution of development works. The general house is meeting after more than four months.

Former minister Mangewal cremated
Ludhiana, January 27
Harnek Singh Mangewal, former Punjab minister, who died on January 24 following a brief illness, was cremated at his native village Mangewal, about 40 kms here last evening.

Temperature takes a dip again

After three odd days of bright sunshine, the weather in the city once again took a turn with a mild shower around 4 pm, resulting in a sharp decrease in temperature. While most hosiery manufacturers have put up sales thinking the three-day sunshine as the end of winters, many residents took an opportunity to take advantage of the reduced prices of woollens.

Industrialist found dead  in Mumbai
Ludhiana, January 27
A city industrialist, Amit (26), was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a hotel at Mumbai a few days ago. His body was brought to here this evening. Family sources said Sunder Nagar-based industrialist had left the city for Delhi 10 days ago. He was scheduled to collect pending bills of several lakhs.

Over 100 students of Shri Hargobind Public School participated in knitting contest organised by the VSGM.
Students from classes VI to XI participated in the contest. They were divided in five categories and given a free hand to knit on the spot any pattern of their choice.

Judicial remand for traffic cops
Ludhiana, January 27
Two traffic policemen and a Home Guard personnel, who were suspended by the district police authorities for indulging in corruption yesterday, were remanded in judicial custody for 14 days by a district court today.

Doctors decry Talwandi’s statement
Ludhiana, January 27
About 30 doctors of the Civil Hospital, here, demonstrated against former Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Jagdev Singh Talwandi’s statement, published in a section of media, in which he had accused Dr Y.C. Markan, Senior Medical Officer of the hospital, of removing kidneys of Ludhiana Central Jail prisoners, who came to him for treatment.
