Virus decimates trout population Mandi, January 8 The entire stock in trout fish farms at Barot, Patli Kulh, Nagni and Sangla has perished due to the disease, which has assumed epidemic proportions. In the Barot hatchery of the district, which once abounded in trout, there are now only dead fish. There are no buyers despite an assurance given by the department that the fish is good for human consumption. Mr B.R. Kaundal, Director-cum-Warden, Fisheries, Himachal Pradesh, said the dead fish were sent to various laboratories all over the country and abroad, including Norway, to identify the killer disease. A multi-crore trout fish hatchery had been upgraded at Patlikulh in Kulu district with Norwegian collaboration. The project, started in 1986, was completed in 1996. The trout population in the Patlikulh hatchery, where the latest technology had been transferred from Norway, has also been totally destroyed by the viral disease. It has been suggested that the entire stock should be disposed of and disease-free eggs and fingerlings brought up in hatcheries all over the state. |
Road to be named after Banda Bahadur Paonta Sahib, January 8 The Chief Minister, who visited the historic Gurdwara Paonta Sahib here to join in the birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Gobind Singh, said the formal order renaming the road would reach the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Sirmaur tomorrow as the government had already cleared the proposal. Mr Dhumal was presented a siropa by Jathedar Kartar Singh Takkar, member of the parbandhak committee of the gurdwara. The CM said the file pertaining to the allotment of a piece of land to Gurdwara Paonta Sahib in lieu of the historic Lohgarh Fort would also be cleared soon The management of the historic Gurdwara Lohgarh had in a unanimous resolution decided to hand over the management to the parbandhak committee last year. Sikhs of Himachal Pradesh had been demanding that the Lohgarh Fort, which is at present in ruins, be reconstructed as a national memorial as it was from this fort that Baba Banda Singh Bahadur launched the country’s first ever freedom struggle by waging a war against the Mughal empire. The issue has been taken up by the Union Chemicals and Fertiliser Minister, Mr Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, with the Union Government so that a proper memorial is raised. The Sikhs of Himachal Pradesh want that Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee should lay the foundation stone of the proposed memorial. The National Commission for Minorities and its Vice-Chairman, Mr Tarlochan Singh, has also supported the move. About the introduction of Punjabi both as an elective and optional subject in Himachal schools, Mr Prem Kumar Dhumal assured the congregation that all promises made by his government during the tercentenary celebrations of the birth of the Khalsa and later would be honoured. “The state government is in touch with the Regional Language Centre of Punjabi University, Patiala, for training of its teachers. All schools where students want to opt for Punjabi would be provided with language teachers,” he added. Meanwhile, a colourful procession was taken out here today, on the eve of the birth anniversary of Guru Gobind
Singh. |
