Threaten to intensify stir against privatisation move

To protest against the privatisation move of the Union Government, various employees’ unions sat on dharna in various parts of the city and blocked traffic for more than two hours, causing inconvenience to hundreds of commuters .

In the wake of outbreak of jaundice in the Urban Estate (Phase 1), Dugri locality, here and seven confirmed cases being reported during past couple of days, the Municipal Corporation authorities vehemently denied contamination of water in the affected area, while claiming that water samples, collected from five different places in the colony, were found absolutely safe and fit for consumption.

Man succumbs to burns
Ludhiana, January 8
Deepak Kumar (24), a resident of Durga Puri, who had been admitted to the DMCH after he sustained burn injuries on December, 6, succumbed to his injuries late on Monday night.

Court employee held for graft
Ludhiana, January 8
The local Vigilance Bureau today nabbed a copy examiner in the District Courts complex when he was accepting a bribe of Rs 200. Jora Singh was caught red-handed when he was accepting the currency notes marked by the Vigilance Bureau. His office premises were raided by DSP (Vigilance) Daljinder Singh Dhillon after obtaining a permission from the District Sessions Judge.

‘Abolish anti-dumping duty on HR coils’
Ludhiana, January 8
The Chamber of Industrial and Commercial undertakings (CICU) has demanded abolition of the anti-dumping duty on the import of HR coils and CR coils. The chamber has been maintaining that the influential steel caucus of five top industrial houses was instrumental in getting the anti-dumping duty imposed on the import of steel that ultimately created their monopoly.

The MD Oswal Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation, Ludhiana will be organising a week-long radiation safety course in collaboration with SERB/BARC from January 20-27,2003.

Mozambique minister visits PAU
Ludhiana, January 8
Dr Leonardo Santos Simao, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mozambique, visited Punjab Agricultural University and held discussions with Dr Kirpal Singh Aulakh, Vice-Chancellor of the varsity, here this afternoon. He was accompanied by Mr Carlos Agostinho do Rosario, High Commissioner of the Republic of Mozambique in India.

Decorated towns watch nagar kirtan
Doraha, January 8
A ‘nagar kirtan’ was organised here today by Dashmesh Jatha of Doraha on the eve of the birthday of Guru Gobind Singh. The procession was led by Panj Pyare and followed by horses, elephants, camels and students of the Arya Nagar Guru Nanak Model Senior Secondary School and Dashmesh School.

Mid-day meals raise school attendance

The mid-day meal scheme in government primary schools in the district has increased attendance in schools by 30 per cent.. The scheme of providing mid-day meals started on October 8 last year. The scheme has motivated parents to send their wards to the school more regularly.

Bhatejas get anticipatory bail
Ludhiana, January 8
A local court has granted anticipatory bail to Pardeep Bhateja and his wife Asha Bhateja, managing director and director of M/s Bhateja Spinner Pvt Ltd, accused of committing a fraud on the government. The court has also granted anticipatory bail to Beant Singh, Karamjit Singh, Balwinder Singh and Kuldeep Singh in the same case.

Chill causing skin ailments
Ludhiana, January 8
The biting chill in recent days has brought with it many skin infections. Dermatologists are finding it difficult to treat the increasing number of patients, pouring in at hospital OPDs and clinics these days. Dryness on hands and feet, dandruff, and chill blain are the common ailments.

Rural Sports festival
Ludhiana, January 7
The 31st Rural Sports Festival, to be organised by the Panchayati Raj Sports Club, will be held at the Guru Gobind Singh Stadium at Sahnewal from February 2 to 4. This was informed by Mr Jagdeep Singh Honey and Mr Harpreet Singh Harry, president and chairman of the organising club, respectively. The main attraction of this festival will be athletics, hockey, kabaddi, volleyball and badminton besides bullock cart races and dog races.

Vigilance team visits site
Khanna, January 8
Two officials of the vigilance wing of the Local Self-Government Department visited a site where development work was being carried out by a contractor of the Municipal Council of Khanna, on a complaint lodged by local councillor Vijay Sharma on Tuesday evening. The two officials, Mr Rajinder Rai and Mr Mukesh Garg, reached the office of the Municipal Council and checked the attendance register of the council.
