Shooting championship begins

Chandigarh, December 25
The 27th Northern India Shooting Championships began today at the Sector 25 Patiali ki Rao Shooting Range. The UT Administrator, Lieut Gen J.F.R. Jacob (retd), inaugurated the meet in which many prominent shooters of the region, will participate According to the Zonal Shooting Academy, the organisers of this meet, international shooters like Jaspal Rana, Sushma Rana, Harwinder Kaur, Sabeeha Dhillon, Anuba Dhillon among others would take part.

Earlier, General Jacob hailed the shooters on their performance and said he expected more glorious achievements from them.

He also tried his hand at shooting.

The events will be held in both pistol and rifle section.

Cricket tourney

A superb half century by Mohan Singh enabled Estate Office Employees Cricket team in beating Education Department by eight wickets in the fourth City Beautiful Cricket tournament played here today. Education Department was 114 runs all out while ESTESA XI achieved the target with eight wickets in hand. In another tie, Sports Department defeated PEC Employees XI by seven runs.

Tiger Club emerge victorious

Chandigarh, December 25
The Tiger Club, Sector 45, here today walked away with the Atal Kreeda Mahotsav State Taekwando Championship Cup, organised by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha on the occasion of the birthday of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee.

The Air Force Club finished runners-up in the championship held at the Skating Ring in Sector 10. The one-day championship witnessed 50 individual and 3 group fights.

Chief guest and BJP National Executive member Satyapal Jain distributed prizes among the winners and runners-up. BJYM National Executive member Hartirath Singh was the guest of honour. Party President Yashpal Mahajan, BJYM President Davesh Moudgil and State Taekwando Association President Gurpreet Singh Dhillon were also present on the occasion.

Mr Hartirath Singh appreciated the local unit of the party for successfully organising national programmes.

At another function held at the party office in Kamalam in Sector 33, the party functionaries distributed sweets and booklets highlighting achievements of Vajpayee-led NDA government.

Mr Mahajan read out the achievements of the Prime Minister during the past four and half years.

Zila Parishad Chairman Darshan Singh, Leader of the Opposition Kamla Sharma, Purushottam Mahajan, Kanhaiya Lal Sharma, Prem Sagar Jain, Raghubir Lal Arora, G.C. Gupta, Pavittar Singh Namdhari, Desraj Tandon, Rajesh Gupta, Nancy Ganju, Urmil Devi, Davesh Moudgil, Shingara Singh and Mohmmed Salia Khan spoke on the occasion.
