FILM REVIEW
Indian curry in western settings
Sanjeev Singh Bariana

‘KAANT’ (Piccadilly and KC, Panchkula) is a daring attempt at a new genre production which is a Hollywood style action-drama experimentation on the Bollywood screen.

The attempt lacks in a lasting appeal and is unlikely to leave any lasting impressions on the crowd memory. This can have a telling impact on the future of the production.

Although the story idea has been borrowed largely from Hollywood film ‘Reservoir Dogs’, this one, however, has a distinct style in character presentation neatly carried out under the directorial eyes of Sanjay Gupta. The pace is gripping and appreciable. However, the dialogues are unclear and a little fast.

The script has consciously delved on the vocabulary expected from the characters in undercover activities. The crudity of expression, which is vulgar at times, could be seen with strong reservations by the gentry.

The story in the Los Angles settings has been shot in a single 30 day schedule which is an unheard achievement in Indian film circles going by the status and daily schedule of names in the cast.

One strong point of the overall presentation is justice done to all the main characters, including Amitabh bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Sunil Shetty, Kumar Gaurav and Lucky Ali. Mahesh Manjrekar in his debut role has done a commendable performance.

It is a story of all the above mentioned characters who meet in a police lock-up more than once. They decide to strike big and plan a bank robbery. Bachchan is the planner. Dutt is already an underworld operator. The bank is looted. However, when the gang opens the bank door after carrying out the operation neatly they are greeted by the cops.

The gang manages to flee. However, each one is posed with a common question as to who among them was the traitor to have informed the police.

The music is not melodious. It has strong beats and a couple of songs, particularly one featuring Malaika Arora, is surely to catch the attention of the audience when it leave the halls.

The film has been produced by Sanjay Gupta and Raju Sharad Patel. Dev Kohli has penned the lyrics for the music by Anand raaj Anand; and Pratish nandy Communications is the co-producer.

‘Saathiya’ (KC and Suraj, Panchkula) is a very clean love story of two young hearts who face the initial settlement problems in a love marriage. Vivek Oberoi has teamed with Rani Mukherjee in the remake of a Tamil hit “Alai Payuthe” by Mani Ratnam who is the guru of the director.

The progress of action of this love story has no extra twisted cinematic turns to suit the lover pair. The story settings are very life-like and, yet, handled deftly. The second half, however, fails to catch on the aura of the earlier part and looks a little longer than necessary.

Vivek meets Rani Mukherjee, a medical student, at a friend’s marriage and falls in love. He follows her everywhere till she agrees. The family divide of the rich Oberoi’s family and the poorer Rani’s does not allow them to marry. The two, however, marry and are thrown out of their homes by the parents.

The couple faces the teething problems in a marriage and Rani feels that she has been let down by Oberoi who went out in all ways to impress her before the marriage. He meanwhile is struggling to get his feet firm in the race of life.

Bobby Bedi of “Bandit Queen” fame is the producer. Shaad Ali, the assistant of Mani Ratnam, is trying his luck at direction. Gulzar has penned the lyrics for A.R. Rahman’s music. Another highlight is that it is a Yash Raj Films presentation.
