Encroachments
hit Project Roshni Jammu, December 15 Under project Roshni, the NC government had decided to sell the state land encroached upon by private parties and individuals during the past several decades. The money was to be recovered from the encroachers after handing over to them the ownership of the land. According to official figures over 5.50 lakh kanals had been encroached upon during the past several years in the state. The revenue record in most of the cases had allegedly been destroyed and the encroachers had, in connivance with the Revenue Department officials, prepared new records showing that the land they were in possession of had not been grabbed. The encroachers, most of them influential political leaders, have even grabbed the costly government or forest land around Srinagar and Jammu cities. During the past 13 years, Jammu tehsil has registered the maximum encroachment of forest and Nazool land and so far over 56,000 kanals of such land have been grabbed in the winter capital followed by 37,000 kanals in Rajouri district. The present Mufi-led government has the option to either reverse project Roshni or get it implemented with a firm hand to resolve the state’s fiscal distress. The most ticklish problem as far as encroachment of government land is concerned pertains to the land grab in the famous tourist resorts of Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Kokernag, Patnitop and Sonamarg where affluent businessmen and politicians have allegedly grabbed large chunks of government land, thereby affecting the master plan for development of these resorts. Will the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohd. Sayeed, dare touch these encroachers? |
Army jawan hurt in mine blast Srinagar, December 15 The blast was caused by a landmine planted by the troops in the camp for their self-defence, the sources said. The Army had mined a number of their camps as a part of the strategy to foil suicide attacks of the militants who storm their camps in small groups and attack the troops. The injured jawan, belonging to 24 Rashtriya Rifles, was shifted to a hospital and his condition was stated to be serious. The accidental blast in the camp took place a day after the troops of the unit recovered a Pakistan-made anti-aircraft missile from nearby forest along the Line of Control.
