Fortis clarifies on patient’s death
Tribune News Service

SAS Nagar, December 15
In response to the story carried by Chandigarh Tribune on December 12, the Medical Director of Fortis Heart Institute, Dr R.V. Karanjekar, has stated that ‘‘while it is unfortunate that a life was lost, there are certain irrefutable medical facts, which need to be pointed out.”

A 65-year-old patient, Chhajju Ram, who died at the hospital on December 11 after a heart surgery due to multiorgan failure, was a heart patient since 1996 when he had undergone an angioplasty to clear blockage of his arteries. “He was a confirmed hypertensive and diabetic as per the investigations done at Fortis Heart Institute in October, 2002, when he had come for his angiography and also just before his surgery, ’’ the Medical Director said.

He further stated that prior to the surgery, the patient was fully briefed on his condition and informed that his disease had progressed substantially. His being a diabetic further increased the risk. Besides this, the patient signed a ‘high-risk consent form’ at the time of the surgery, which clearly stated the factors responsible for it being a high-risk surgery, he said.

‘‘On opening the heart, it was found that the disease was far more pronounced and eight grafts were put to ensure that the heart was beating properly. During the eight-hour surgery all possible steps were taken to save the patient’s life. ECG records taken after the surgery were normal. The patient subsequently died due to multiple organ failure in spite of an extremely complicated and successful high-risk heart surgery,’’ Dr Karanjekar said.

‘‘In such cases, it is very common with heart patients where artery disease has progressed to an advanced stage that blockages also occur in the arteries supplying blood to the other organs of the body. This reduced blood supply to these organs makes them weak. Unfortunately, this is what happened with Chhajju Ram and he developed problems with the functioning of the kidneys and the gut. Everything possible, including a dialysis was done to try and save the patient,’’ he said.

The story also mentioned another case, that of Mohammed Usmaan. The patient had been taken to the hospital after a heart attack. “We did an angiography and found that he was suffering from a triple vessel disease. The only way to save the patient’s life was to attempt a salvage heart surgery. The high risk was explained to the patient and he agreed to undergo the same. He signed a high-risk surgery consent form. As is normal in such cases, the main artery was operated first. However, his heart did not recover from the damage done by the heart attack,” the Medical Director said.
