Dr L.H. Lobo memorial oration at CMC

The 20th Dr L.H. Lobo memorial oration and a symposium on total knee replacement with a lot of free interaction with experts was organised by the Department of Orthopaedics Surgery, Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), in association with Dr L.H. Lobo memorial trust here today.

Dr Rajeev Kapoor, Deputy Medical Superintendent, in a press statement said that the event was marked by the presence of various eminent orthopaedic surgeon faculties from across the country and abroad. These included Prof. O.N.Nagi, PGI, Chandigarh, Dr S.Marya, Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, Dr A.Rajgopal, New Delhi, and Dr R.Bhalla, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. In addition, an overseas faculty of eminent arthroplasty surgeons like Dr Ananthakrishnan, Texas, USA, and Dr Feroze Yusufji, Atlanta, USA, also actively participated in the programme.

Topics covered in the symposium included all the details of total knee replacement surgery including aspects of pre-operative planning, selection of patient, role of total knee replacement in various deformities, complications of total knee replacement and management, new fixation techniques and other surgical alternatives to total knee replacement.

More than 100 orthopaedic surgeons from Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi participated in the programme. The programme was presided over by Dr Hardas Singh, an eminent orthopaedic surgeon from Amritsar. Dr O.N. Nagi from PGI delivered the oration on ‘management of neglected fracture neck femur’.

On this occasion, Mr S. Wadhera, senior advocate and president, Dr S.K. Chopra, secretary of Dr Lobo Memorial Trust addressed the gathering and briefed about the activities of the Trust. Dr T.M. Jaison, acting director and Dr Mohan Verghese, Principal, CMCH, also addressed the gathering.

Child healthcare week concludes

Ludhiana, November 23
The district branch of the Indian Academy of Peadiatrics (IAP) celebrated ‘child health care week’ from November 14 to 21 here. During the celebrations, various lectures and other activities were organised at different places.

Dr R.S. Sibia, general secretary of the branch, in a press statement today said that lectures on AIDS, breast feeding, resuscitation of new born, were held at Khalsa College for Women, Government College for Women and Oswal Cancer Hospital, respectively.

An inter school health quiz for the ninth and tenth standard students was organised at DAV Public School in which participants from leading schools of the city took part. Guru Nanak Public School got the first prize while St. Thomas was declared second and Tagore Public School was declared third.

Dr A.S. Chawla, president of the Ludhiana IAP, said lectures and activities will definitely make people aware of the deadly diseases.

He said that such programmes should be organised and the IAP will do efforts to organise such events in the future.

National Bridge Championship begins

More than 1200 participants from all over the country are taking part in the 44th Winter National Bridge Championship which began at the Sutlej Club here today. The competition during this championship, which will continue till December 3, will be held accordance with international standards and bidding boxes and screen tables wiil be used from pre-quarter finals onwards.

Capt Amarinder Singh, Chief Minister, Punjab, formally inaugurated the championship this evening. While addressing the participants and a select gathering on this occasion, the chief minister said that the game of bridge sharpens skills, memory and tactics as well. It was about seven years ago that he played the game keenly, he said. He wished a fine time for the participants who had come from different parts of the country.

Mr Y.S. Ratra, Chief Secretary, Punjab, Mr R.N. Gupta, former IAS officer and General Manager, The Tribune Group of Publications, Mr K R Lakhanpal, Finance Secretary, Punjab and president, Punjab Bridge Association (PBA), Mr K.Y. Kamalakar Rao, President, Bridge Federation of India (BFI), Mr P.C. Goenka, president, Emeritus and Mr Krishan Goyal, general secretary, PBA, were also present on the occasion.

The first day of the championship was reserved for an exhibition match and the championship will formally start tomorrow. Capt Amarinder Singh, pairing with Mr Lakhanpal played an exhibition match against the duo of Mr Krishan Goyal and Ms Geeta Goenka. The second match was played between the team of Mr R.N. Gupta, Mr Y.S. Ratra and the team comprising of Mr Mukul Chatterjee and Mr P.C. Goenka.

Snooker tourney

Ludhiana, November 23
As many as 100 participants in the junior as well senior section are expected to take part in the Punjab State Snooker Tournament slated to be held at Sutlej Club here from November 26 to 29, according to Mr Achint Verma, secretary, Punjab Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA). Entries may be sent to Mr Verma or to Mr Rajesh Bhambi, joint secretary, PBSA, at the billiards room of the venue by November 25.

The Punjab team for the forthcoming National Snooker Championship scheduled to be held at Jammu will be selected on the basis of the participant's performance during this four-day meet.
