BCM students mesmerise

A function to mark the week-long silver jubilee celebrations of BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School was held last evening. Mr OP Munjal, MD, Hero Cycles Ltd. was the chief guest. School students presented a dazzling cultural bonanza.

The president of the managing committee, Mr Satyanand Munjal, and other members of the committee and parents were present. The cultural extravaganza consisted of songs, dances, modelling, and skits. The function started with a performance by the school band followed by a welcome song by tiny tots. It was followed by an item ‘Dancing queens and alphabets’ that enthralled the audience .

The UKG students presented a modelling item in colourful outfits and sashayed down the ramp amidst thunderous applause. The use of multimedia project for providing background to various items added a professional touch to the function.

Students presented many items, including a choreography ‘Rescue from Sugarland’. A torch dance, was presented which mesmerised the audience. Another item ‘Dance Bonanza’, a synchronised presentation of different folk dances thrilled the parents.

The achievements of the school in academics, sports and other fields were highlighted by the Principal Paramjit Kaur in her report.

Mr OP Munjal lauded the efforts of school authorities in putting up such a grand show.

The school also organised a competition for the multimedia presentation in Microsoft Powerpoint during the week-long silver jubilee celebrations of the school. Around 10 schools of Ludhiana participated in it. The competition was open to classes IX to XII and each team comprised two students.

To test students’ awareness, the topics were based on current problems. Students presented CD' on ‘globalisation - a threatening opportunity’, ‘polythene - the unwanted substance’, ‘Survival of the fittest - the earnest need of 21st century’. Mr Rajinder Syal was the chief guest. Through the presentation on polythene, the students highlighted the necessity to ban polythene which was otherwise harmful to the environment.

The chief guest applauded the efforts of the participants.

Speaking at the occasion, Mrs Paramjit Kaur, principal, stressed the need to equip the students with the latest information technology and knowledge. She said that there was a need to create awareness among the present generation regarding the threat to our environment.

Great efforts were made by each team and they made their presentation meaningful and left a lasting impression on the minds of the viewers.

Trophies were presented to the winning teams and certificates were awarded to all participants. A token of honour was also presented to the judges.

Results:

First: Tagore Public School, Ludhiana.

Second: G.G.N. Public School, Civil Lines, Ludhiana.

Third: BCM Senior Secondary School, Chandigarh Road, Ludhiana.

Ludhiana, November 13
The birthday of “Chacha Nehru” is a day of celebrations for school students. Since many schools remain closed on November 14, Pandit Nehru’s birthday, the Children’s Day functions are held a day earlier. Children, on this occasion, presented puppet shows and cultural programmes here.

A ‘Kids Carnival’ and ‘Puppet Show’ were held in the lawns of St. Xavier Playway School, where students enjoyed bouncer jumping and shook hands with Mickey Mouse, Charlie Chaplin and a dinosaur. The puppets presented tales of ancient Indian emperors, nawabs and the other rulers. A magic show and a dance presentation, ‘Saanp Sapera’, made tiny tots happy. Ms S. Chopra of the school told the children about Pandit Nehru.

In Tender Foot Nursery School of Punjab Mata Nagar, students had come in fancy dresses, attired like brides, bridegrooms, Shravan Kumar, balloon seller, Armyman, Maulvi, Son Pari, Radha, Krishna and folk dancers of various regions.

In Gagan Public High School, a number of cultural events were organised. Students of Class V presented a choreographed show on a patriotic theme. A student dressed like Bharat Mata and the others like famous patriots were part of the cast. A lively ‘giddha’ and ‘bhangra’ thrilled the audience. Amit, a student, presented a comedy item. The guest of honour was Mr Nahar Singh Gill, Mayor of the Municipal Corporation.

Students of SAN Jain Model Senior Secondary School presented a colourful cultural bonanza. Students of primary classes took part in a fancy-dress competition. Gaylord Pre-nursery School of Sunder Nagar had also organised a fancy-dress competition. The first prize went to Mehtab Kaur, while Harpuneet Singh and Dhriti Jain were declared second. Kashish Jain stood third.

350 to attend congress of biological chemists

Ludhiana, November 13
The Society of Biological Chemists will organise its three-day 71st annual conference on the PAU campus from tomorrow.

Dr M. R. S. Rao, an eminent scientist of the Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore, will be the chief guest, and Dr K. S. Aulakh, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, will preside over the inaugural session which will be held in Pal Auditorium.

Dr M. A. Zahir, president, organising committee and Dean, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, revealed that Punjab was hosting this conference after 28 years. More than 350 scientists from all over the country are expected to participate in the conference and will present their research papers on various biochemical issues related to plants, human beings and micro organisms.

Dr A. P. S. Mann, organising secretary and coordinator of the Research College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, added that the scientists would present their research papers and deliberate on various issues of current interest like plant biochemistry and crop productivity, molecular basis of diseases and disease management, microbial biotechnology, cancer biology, plant molecular biology and biotechnology, enzymes and enzyme technology and biodiversity and biochemical toxicology. Besides some new researches on the synthesis of useful chemicals to be used as potential plant growth regulators, herbicide, pesticides and insecticides would also be presented during the congress.
