Preventive dentistry congress from Nov 14
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 9
With almost 45 per cent of cancers being oral cavity ones, resulting from paan and gutkha chewing, reverse smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, the fifth congress of the Asian Academy of Preventive Dentistry, beginning of November 14 at the PGI, will focus on these issues.

“After putting in our bid for holding the congress at Beijing the PGI Dental Department has been given the honour as over 140 foreign and 300 Indian delegates are expected to attend the congress,” said Dr H.S. Chawla, head of the department and Chairman of the Asian Academy of Preventive Dentistry. He said the 24th annual conference of the Indian Society of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry had been clubbed with the three-day congress.

Dr Chawla said seeing the high incidence of oral cancer, it was important to create awareness among the public. With the theme of the congress being “Complete oral health through prevention” the focus will be on the preventive part. “A public interaction session with experts would be held on November 15 so that people of the region can be made aware about oral cancer, dento facial trauma and dental caries,” he said.

Dr Chawla said in states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Jammu and Kashmir, people indulging in reverse smoking were complaining of oral cancer. Apart from this, chilly growers in some of the states, too, were getting oral cancer as they tasted it to check bitterness at the time of plucking.

“However the biggest cause of oral cancer remains gutkha and paan masala. These causes lesions in the mouth which, if unattended, could turn cancerous,” warned Dr Ashok Utreja.

Apart from pre-congress courses on November 13, there will be courses on topics like “Cardiopulmonary cerebral resuscitation”, “Value of evidence in pedodontics and preventive dentistry” and “Endodontics made easy in deciduous teeth”, besides 23 guest lectures, 85 oral presentations and 46 posters.
