A sparkling all-round performance by man of the match Rajiv Rathore and deadly off-spin bowling by Puru Singh helped Malviya Club defeat K N Colts by seven wickets in the fourth Dr. Girdhari Lal Memorial Cricket Tournament at the Kalindi College ground.

Scores: K N Colts: 173 all out in 39.2 overs (Sandeep Chawla 42, 4x4; Sumit Dogra 33, Raja Gurmeet Singh 28, Rajiv Rathod 4 for 23, Puru Singh 4 for 29). Malviya Club: 174 for 3 in 32 overs (Deepak Anand 72 n.o, 8x4; Sachin Khurana 51, 7x4; Rajiv Rathod 29, Raja Gurmeet Singh 3 for 30).

In another match, superb batting by Dinesh Yadav(71, 2x6, 7x4) and deadly bowling by Tarun Ahuja (4 for 37) helped Bright Cricket Club beat Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) by 42 runs. Test highlights

The highlights of the second cricket Test between India and West Indies being played in Chennai will be shown at 8 p.m on Star Sports and 11.30 p.m on ESPN. ESPN Star Sports had earlier announced the acquisition of telecast rights to feature comprehensive daily highlights of all international cricket played in India till September 2004.

Uttaranchal Heroes avoid relegation

Uttaranchal Heroes beat Golden Stars 3-1 in a key match to decide relegation from Group A Division League of the Delhi Soccer Association (DSA)-SAILOpen Clubs Football League Championship at the Ambedkar Stadium on Thursday. Uttranchal led by 2-0 at the interval. Inside-left Mawiteei scored the first goal off a solo effort in the 23rd minute. Medio Danzial slammed home the second goal in the 28th minute. In the second half, Rajesh Kanojia bolstered Uttranchal’s lead with a fine goal while Manish pulled off the consolation goal for Golden Stars in the 55th minute. Jat Heroes were the other team to face relegation from A Division as they did not play in the league.

The Super League matches will begin on Friday. Fixtures: A Division: Indian Air Force (Palam) vs Hans (1.30 p.m); Shastri Club vs Youngmen (3 p.m)—Ambedkar Stadium. B Division: Bangadarshan vs Paschim Heroes (1.30 pm); Panchkuian vs Goodwill (3 p.m)—Nehru Stadium East ground.

Oriental Bank to support soccer

Oriental Bank of Commerce has pledged its increased commitment to promote football following new directives from the Government of India for recruitment of sportsmen under stipend scheme. The board of directors of the bank have resolved to extend sustained support to football by imparting training to the existing 14 football players and also to gradually increase the number of players to a group of 26 employees under the guidance of a professional coach. The bank also plans to set-up a football academy.

Initially, the Bank would engage sportspersons under the scholarship scheme in the age group of 15-18 years. They will be offered scholarship/retainership on a temporary basis for a fixed amount, as per the new guidelines advocated by the Government based on the recommendations of the Banks Sports Board, established by the Indian Banks’ Association. The Oriental Bank has been organising the H L Parwana Memorial Football Tournament since 1981. Mr B D Narang, chairman and managing director of Oriental Bank of Commerce, said, “the bank has made a conscious decision to support the game of football in the country through constant guidance and benefits to talented and upcoming sportspersons”.

Gaurav Gambhir stars for Punjab

A strokeful 85 by Gaurav Gambhir enabled Punjab compile 264 for 9 in 92 overs on the first day of their three-day match against Delhi in the Under-15 Cricket Championship at the Palam B ground. Punjab won the toss and opted to bat. Openers Suny Sohal and Gurkirat put on 69 runs before the first wicket well. But from 3 for 104, they slumped to 6 for 129, when Gaurav Gambhir played a resolute innings to bail Punjab out of a tight spot.

Haryana batsmen dominate proceedings

Rohtak, October 17
Haryana were 85 for no loss in their first innings in reply to Jammu and Kashmir’s first innings total of 122 on the opening day of their three-day Polly Umrigar Trophy Cricket match at Maharaja Agrarian Stadium here today.

Earlier, a five-wicket haul by Haryana’s right arm medium pacer Deepak Choudhary helped his team to restrict their opponents to 122. Narender hit a half-century and Jan Ajaz remained unbeaten with 22.

No other Jammu and Kashmir batsman could reach double figures. At draw of stumps today, Haryana’s Narinder and Nitin Saini were batting with 48 and 18 runs respectively.

MDU swimming team for Kolkata

A seventeen-member squad will represent M.D.University, Rohtak, in the forthcoming Inter University Swimming and Water Polo Championship to be hosted by Kolkata University from October 20. Mr Chanda Singh and Mr Virender Singh have been named manager and coach respectively. Following is the list of selected players:

Mumbai High Court beat Supreme Court by 18 runs in the 14th All-India Advocates’ Cricket Tournament at the Central Secretariat ground. Unbeaten century by Ritesh Singh for Supreme Court went in vain.

Scores: Mumbai High Court: 237 for 9 in 35 overs (Rajesh Singh 55, Mohd. Asif 45, Abhijeet Sen Gupta 3 for 34, Mohd. Azeen 2 for 43).

Supreme Court, Delhi: 217 for 7 in 35 overs (Ritesh Singh 111 n.o, Aditya Chaudhary 26, Tushar Kumar 4 for 24).

Karnataka High Court beat Lucknow High Court by five wickets at the Central Secretariat No 2 ground.

Lucknow: 146 all out in 32.2 overs (Vivek R R 30, Shiv Dutt 3 for 20). Karnataka: 147 for 5 in 29 overs (Vivek Reddy 56, Obaid Waris 3 for 22).

Andhra Pradesh High Court beat Indore High Court by 105 runs at the Siri Fort ground.

Haryana girls in hockey final

SGNP Girls Senior Secondary School, Shahabad (Haryana) will meet Karamat Hussain Muslim Girls Inter-College, Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) in the final of the ninth Nehru Girls Hockey Tournament at the Shivaji Stadium on Friday. The match will begin at 3.25 p.m.

In the semi-finals on Thursday, Shahabad defeated Birsa Munda Vidyapitha, Rourkela (Orissa) 6-1, after leading by 4-1 at half time while Karamat Hussain College defeated Sanjay Gandhi Vidyapith, Motera (Gandhinagar), Gujarat 1-0.

Binita Xess put Birsa Munda in the lead with a field goal in the 11th minute. Stung by the reverse, the Haryana girls fought back to equalise two minutes later through Harjinder Kaur who converted a penalty corner. Arti Sharma struck a brace of goals while Saravjeet Kaur, Ramneek Kaur and Jasjeet Kaur account for the other goals. The 31st Nehru Junior Boys Hockey Tournament will begin on Friday.

Salwan Boys to meet Hansraj in Parle Cup

Salwan Boys will clash against Hansraj Model School in the final of the Parle Cup Inter-School Under-17 Cricket Tournament at the Bharat Nagar ground.

In the semi-finals, Salwan Boys defeated St. Columba’s School by 90 runs while Hansraj Model School defeated Government Senior Secondary School, Vikas Puri by 86 runs.

The final will be played over two days. Scores: Salwan Boys: 258 for 5 in 40 overs (Rajat Gupta 47, Maninder Singh 49 n.o, Gaurav Sharma 47, Rajender Ramola 48 n.o, Wilkins Victor 3 or 48).

St. Columba’s: 168 all out in 39.3 overs (Wilkins Victor 47, Shivam Gupta 37 n.o, Narender Singh 3 for 28, Ashutosh Sharma 2 for 26, Arun Choudhary 2 for 38). Rajat was declared the man of the match.

Hansraj Model School: 202 for 6 in 40 overs (Sahil Arora 62, Siddhant Mandle 51, Suresh Kumar 2 for 36, Kishan Busawla 2 for 38).

Neha Nisar wins gold

Neha Nisar won a gold medal in the 600m runs and Alisha Rawat lifted the silver medal as Bal Bhavan Public School, Mayur Vihar II dominated in the Delhi State Summer Athletic meet held at the Chhatrasal Stadium. In the 4x100m relay, the Bal Bhavan quartet of Alisha Chawla, Neha Nisar, Akansha and Parul Rawat won the gold.

Akansha Rawat also won the bronze in the 100 race while Alisha Chawla lifted the bronze in discus throw. Preeti Nagar won the bronze medals in the 200m (junior girls category), 400m and 800m races.
