Everyone’s poor when it comes to free medical aid!
Ravi S. Singh
Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, September 24
When it comes to availing free services meant for poorer sections of the society, class distinction gets blurred. This exactly was the case at a one-day free health camp, organised by Delhi-based Jaipur Golden Hospital in association with the Maitri Kalyan Manch, a voluntary organisation, in local Jiwan Jyoti Senior Secondary Public School recently.

More than 400 patients, residing in various parts of Gurgaon, including posh Sector 14, Sector 17 and Sector 4, got themselves registered and received medical treatment in the camp, free of cost.

According to Mr Vipin Khanna, a trustee of the Jaipur Golden Charitable Trust that runs Jaipur Golden Hospital and who is the main person behind the camp, said that a team of about 20 doctors along with technicians from the hospital were pressed into service to treat the patients. The doctors were specialists, ranging from the field of medicine, cardiology, eyes, child and gynecology. Arrangements were made for conducting tests to check blood sugar and blood pressure and ECG.

Mr Khanna, a resident of Gurgaon, said that this was the third camp in this district organised by the hospital. While the patients having minor ailments were treated in such camps, those needing prolonged diagnosis and treatment were referred to Golden Jaipur Hospital. The treatment, of course, are all free of cost. The Jaipur Golden CharitableTrust also provides free medicines to the patients in the camps.

Kela Devi (80), a resident of Sector 4 who attended the camp, said that she had come to get her throat problems cured. She said that she learned of the camp from her neighbourhood.

The health camp was elaborate in its arrangement and the organisers had taken pains to draw maximum participation possible.

Rumour-mongers thwart polio drive
Our Correspondent

Meerut, September 24
Expressing deep concern over the increasing cases of polio in the Meerut Division, the Commissioner, Mr N. S. Ravi, directed all district magistrates to take stern action against the officials who are not taking anti-polio vaccination movement in the division seriously.

He also directed all SSPs of the division to book the anti-social elements indulging in spreading misinformation about the government initiative.

The Government of Uttar Pradesh had made the district magistrates and divisional commissioners in charge of the anti-polio vaccination programme. There were reports of increasing incidences of polio reported in the Meerut division despite the fact over 14 anti-polio drives had been carried out in the past few years.

The OSD, Health Department, Lucknow, Mr Karnail Singh, on Monday reviewed the anti-polio campaign in the division in which Commissioner N. S. Ravi, District Magistrate Rama Raman and all other DMs and CMOs of all the districts were present.

In the review meeting, it was found that at least 36 new cases of polio were reported in the Meerut division this year alone. Mr Ravi said that it was a serious matter when polio had been eradicated from all 226 countries in the world. Only three countries are reported to have some cases of polio.

In the meeting, several senior and subordinate officials also disclosed that the anti-polio movement could not get momentum in the minority-dominated areas as some anti-social elements were spreading rumours that the vaccine was for birth control and not for polio control.
