Chandigarh Police enter final

Chandigarh, September 19
Chandigarh Police outplayed Chandigarh Football Club by a golden goal in the first semifinal, while defending champions AG, Audit, Haryana, got the better of AG, Audit, Punjab, 1-0 in the other semifinal to move into the final of the Senior State Chandigarh Police shaheed Samarak Football Championship played here today at Police Lines, Sector 26.

The finals will be played tomorrow at 3 pm and the UT Administrator, Lieut-General J.F.R. Jacob (retd) will be the chief guest.

In the first semifinals, both the teams remained tied at 1-1 in the stipulated period. Manish of Chandigarh Police scored the first goal in 15th minute, but in the 27th minute, Jagmohan of Chandigarh Football Clubequalised. The match ended with 1-1 in the stipulated period. In the extra time, Lakhwinder Singh of Chandigarh Police became the star of the day when he scored golden goal in the 21st minute.

In the second semifinal, between AG, Audit, Haryana, and AG, Punjab, it was Rajesh Sharma of AG, Haryana, who scored the all important goal in 30th minute. Deepak Seth of AG, Audit, Punjab was shown the red card for using unparliamentary language against the referee. As a protest the AG, Punjab, team walked out and refused to play. But the referee, after a long wait, finally blew the whistle and awarded the match to AG, Haryana.

Volleyball tourney

AG, Punjab, surprised fancied AG, HP, in a well-contested match lasting four sets with scores being 25-21, 24-26, 25-20 and 25-21 to have a title clashin the final with AG, UP, to be played tomorrow in the All India Audit and Accounts (North Zone) Volleyball Tournament. Nainta helped AG, Punjab, rout AG, HP. Earlier, AG, Punjab, defeated AG, Delhi, 25-11,25-7, 25-17.

The meet was inaugurated by Mr Yatish Chandra Satyawadi, Principal Accountant General, A&E. Five teams from North zone are taking part in this tournament.

Handball meet

SD College, Sector 32, got first place in the Panjab University Inter-college Handball Tournament played here today. DAV College, Sector 10, SGGS College, Sector 26, and Panjab University, Chandigarh, secured second, third and fourth place, respectively.

Carrom officials

Mr R.S. Yadav and Mr D.S. Aithani, both carrom officials, have been appointed chief referee and assistant chief referee, respectively, in the 10th Federation Cup Carrom Tournament to be held at Raipur (Chattisgarh) from September 23 to 28. Earlier, Mr Yadav had officiated as umpire in the final of the men’s singles tie.

Term of tourism panel renewed

The Chandigarh Administration today renewed the term of the Chandigarh Tourism Advisory Committee for a further period of one year to promote tourism in the region under the chairmanship of the Secretary, Tourism, Chandigarh Administration.
