‘Cosmo
Films has given my career a new lease’ New Delhi, September 9 Vijay, who earned a two-year exemption on the APGA Tour for his win at the Indian Open 2002, talked about, on the eve of his departure, his newly acquired sponsor, his current form, his feelings about graduating to Asian PGA Tour and his future plans. In a tete-a-tete with him he describes his new role and plan in the golf arena. How does it feel on the brink of a career on the Asian PGA Tour? It feels really good. I have been playing well for the past three or four years and at any stage could have competed on the Asian circuit. However, it all boiled down to finding a sponsor as playing abroad is an expensive proposition. Cosmo Films have indeed given my career a new lease. I am very grateful to Mr Jaipuria who is an avid golf fan and is also the President of The Golf Foundation. I would like to live up to the trust he has placed on me. You did try your hand at playing the Kirin Open on the Japanese Tour two years ago. Thereafter, you didn’t seem too keen to venture abroad. Why? It was an entirely financial decision. At the Kirin Open, I bore all my expenses and believe me this puts a lot of pressure on you. I was unable to play my natural game, as I was more concerned on covering up my expenses. It was hardly surprising that I missed the cut. With a sponsor to back me today, I can concentrate completely on my game. |

DP panel sets out steps to curb eve-teasing New Delhi, September 9 The committee was constituted last week after the cases of eve-teasing culminated in the sordid story of a young Delhi University student jumping out of a moving bus to escape being molested by armed desperadoes. The team consists of Joint Commissioner of Crime against Women Cell Vimla Mehra, Joint Commissioner of Operations A.S. Khan and Joint Commissioner of New Delhi Range Amod Kanth. The top brass of the police is now looking for a replacement for Mr Kanth who has proceeded on a long leave to pursue social work. The committee has taken certain decisions like the kind of action to be taken against the suspects, discussion with NGOs fighting for women’s issues, instruction to bus drivers and conductors to stop their buses near police pickets, police stations, PCR vans if girls are seen being teased in the vehicle. Personnel in plainclothes will also be deployed in busy markets, picnic places and other vulnerable areas. A senior officer in the Delhi Police said NGOs were being asked to work in districts, colonies and socialise with the locals to gather information of such incidents. If any incident takes place in their respective areas, they will talk to the victim and suspects both and work out the case on the spot. If need be, they will approach the local police and action will be taken on the recommendation of the NGOs. The officer said that the society should itself consider the problem of eave-teasing, rape and other women-related crimes in the Capital. Committees should be constituted by influential people of the society at the colony level to control such cases. He said a dress code is also very important. Responsible people of the society should consider the kind of clothes women should wear. Dress code was one of the major factors in the rising cases of eve-teasing, the committee felt. He said women or young girls should avoid moving in deserted places at odd hours. Most of these cases take place during odd hours and in buses. |
