Manisha appears before police Mumbai, September 9 The actress, accompanied by her lawyer Satish Maneshinde, appeared before the police and recorded her statement, police sources said. She was in the police station for 10-15 minutes, they said. Mr Maneshinde later said the police asked the actress about her whereabouts on Friday afternoon when some Shiv Sainiks violently disrupted the screening of the Manisha-starrer film at some theatres, including Gemini, in the city. Manoj Desai, owner of the Gemini theatre, had registered a police complaint about the loss of property during the vandalism. Meanwhile, Manisha has said that she decided to move against the film’s producer-director Shashilal Nair to ensure that he did not get away with ‘’exploitation’’ and stop similar behaviour against other actresses in the future. Participating in Sabe TV’s “Kuch Khaas Baatein,” Manisha denied that the controversy over the film was a publicity stunt. In a related development, Shashilal Nair called on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal here today. Nair briefed Mr Bhujbal about the legal proceedings in connection with the film, which was released last Friday despite a stay till October 5 ordered by the Bombay High Court. He said 97 prints had already been released and the stay was not applicable on them.

Child artiste finds film okay Mumbai, September 9 “We do not know what is on Manisha’s mind. But in my view, there was nothing objectionable or vulgar and the scenes were completely justified”, says 14-year-old Aditya around whom the film revolves. Aditya, who plays a teenaged peeping tom besotten with a woman older than him in the film, said he did not remember the actress being upset during the shooting of the film. “However, I was never present at the spot during the shooting of these scenes. I was always asked to go to my studio room”, said Aditya, a class nine student of Chhatrabhooj Narsee Memorial School.

Yatra blow to Cong claim: BJP New Delhi, September 9 Briefing newspersons here, party general secretary Rajnath Singh, who had flagged off the yatra from Phagvel yesterday, said “the yatra has begun on a victory note as the apprehension raised by the Congress about the possibility of communal tension were proved wrong.” Stating that what had happened in Godhra and after was “unfortunate, shameful and painful”, Mr Rajnath Singh said “what happened after these (communal) incidents was even more shameful.” “How sensitive and serious the BJP was to restore peace and harmony in Gujarat was evident from the fact that the Prime Minister had not only criticised or expressed sorrow over the communal incident, but reminded Mr Modi about the raj dharma, although the latter was following it” he said. On the other hand, the Congress, just for fulfilling its vested political interest” made a mockery of the sentiments of the people and image of the state”, he said. Stating that BJP leaders and workers had been asked not to use foul language against their opponents, Mr Rajnath Singh asked the Congress and its leaders to follow suit. “BJP expects Congress President Sonia Gandhi to do politics with restraint and patience... If she wants to run the party and be in politics nobody can object. But to fulfil her vested political interests she should not damage the image of the country in the eyes of the world,” he said. When he was reminded that Mr Vajpayee himself during his visit to the United Kingdom had described the communal violence in Gujarat as a “national shame”, Mr Rajnath Singh merely said “there is no question of justifying the riots.” Meanwhile, party spokesman and general secretary M.A. Naqvi said the massive public participation in gaurav yatra “proves the hollowness of the claims of the Election Commission and Congress party that the situation in Gujarat was not normal.” “The continuing hectic political activities in Gujarat are a solid proof of the fact that the move of deferring elections has not been made because of the so-called tense situations prevalent there but because of the fact that the fear of defeat in elections is forcing the Congress to initiate moves to get the elections deferred there,” he added. |
Cong calls it diversionary ploy New Delhi, September 9 Congress Chief Spokesman S Jaipal Reddy said it was because of the “misrule” that the BJP had been losing every byelection except the one in which Mr Modi contested. He accused Mr Modi of having launched a campaign of hatred. He parried some questions on the gaurav yatra stating that though there were sizeable crowds at its launch site, most of them were brought from different parts of the state as locals stayed away from it. Mr Reddy said the Congress would make a sincere endeavour to ensure that “anti-BJP votes” were not split in Gujarat when Assembly poll was held in the state. |

stand on poll hypocritical: BJP New Delhi, September 9 “On the one hand Pakistan is hypocritically seeking to describe dictatorship as democracy and on the other hand it is consistently trying to disrupt the election process in Jammu and Kashmir through terrorist violence,” party General Secretary and spokesman M A Naqvi said in a statement here. “These nefarious designs of Pakistan are not only dangerous but are also a challenge to all democratic countries in the world,” he said adding that the BJP considers Pakistan’s demand for more autonomy to Kashmir as redundant since such demands only tend to distract attention from more important issues, including employment, education and development of Jammu and Kashmir. “Pakistan will never be allowed to succeed in her designs at any cost,” he said adding that the BJP while dismissing all claims of autonomy, sought to look at the cardinal spirits of parliamentary resolution as the basis for the permanent solution to the Kashmir tangle which clearly enjoins PoK to be amalgamated with Indian mainland. |
Ministers briefed on J&K elections New Delhi, September 9 The meeting lasting two hours was held at Mr Advani’s North Block office after Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee left for New York to attend the UN General Assembly. Those who attended the meeting included, besides Ms Swaraj, Defence Minister George Fernandes, Information Technology Minister Pramod Mahajan, Food Minister Sharad Yadav, Civil Aviation Minister Shah Nawaz Hussein, Disinvestment Minister Arun Shourie, Minister of State for External Affairs Digvijay Singh, Minister for Coal and Mines Uma Bharti, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Vijay Goel, BJP President Venkaiah Naidu and senior officials of Home, External Affairs and Defence Ministries.

foil bid to hijack plane Mumbai, September 9 The aircraft took off from Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in north-west Mumbai at 3.30 a.m. this morning and the medium-sized airliner was on its way to the island chain of the Maldives. Airport Authority of India (AAI) sources here said as per the information they had received, the passenger was about to enter the cockpit when the plane was 150 km off Male, but was overpowered by the crew. Civil Aviation Minister Syed Shahnawaz Hussain said in New Delhi that officials were conducting a probe into the episode. Asked if there was any security lapse, the minister said the knife that the man was carrying could have been part of the cutlery given with meals during the flight. Airport Director Sudhir Kumar held a meeting of airport officials to review the security arrangements and discuss the incident. Meanwhile, the person, who made a vain bid to hijack an Air Seychelles Boeing 737, has been identified as Hiraji Vaswani, an Indian passport holder, according to the Mumbai airport officials. A high-level meeting of the crisis group was held here in the wake of the attempted hijacking.

Vandana Luthra’s
husband denied bail New Delhi, September 9 Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate V.K. Maheshwari rejected the bail of Luthra, a garment exporter, on the ground that the businessman was involved in a serious economic crime hence he was not entitled for bail. Earlier the same court issued non-bailable warrants against Luthra on an allegation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) that Luthra failed to comply with several summons issued to him for an enquiry in
connection with FERA violations of Rs 30 crore and Rs 70 lakh in 1995-1998. Luthra approached the Delhi High Court against the warrants issued by the magistrate. Dismissing his petition last week, the high court asked Luthra to move a bail application before Mr Maheswari within four days. Following the higher court’s order Luthra moved the application. The ED alleged that Luthra, for exporting of garments to South Africa during 1995-1998, did not obtain permission from the Reserve Bank of India for such a huge amount. UNI |
Sufi message relevant, says PM Ajmer, September 9 Sufi saints like Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti are messengers of religious equality and national unity. “The message of tolerance and brotherhood propounded by these saints have as much relevance today as in the past. These teachings can guide the entire humanity to end violence and hatred across the world,” Mr Vajpayee said in his greetings on the 790th urs of the saint. A “chadar” was offered on the Prime Minister’s behalf at the dargah as the fortnight-long urs festival began today with thousands of pilgrims across the country thronging to offer their prayers. Over 1000 devotees, named Kalandars, reached the dargah last evening on foot from Delhi after covering the distance in 12 days. Some other groups of pilgrims carrying green flags in their hands reached on foot from various places in the country.

SP woos Muslim MLAs, draws flak Lucknow, September 9 The letter, written on September 7 and sent to all 15 Muslim BSP legislators, explained that as the BSP-led government in Uttar Pradesh had to reply to the Supreme Court about its stand on the Ayodhya notification by September 28, the party was holding a rally on that day with Mr Advani as the chief guest so as to only give him a clean chit. Reacting to this letter the Chief Minister, Ms Mayawati said that by writing letters to only Muslim legislators of the BSP the SP had shown its true colour. The party was trying to mislead the minority community by giving wrong facts, she added. On July 27 the Supreme Court had given the state government eight weeks time to give its reply on its stand on the Ayodhya notification. The deadline expires on September 23, not September 28 as claimed by the SP leaders, including the Leader of Opposition in State Assembly, Md Azam Khan, the Chief Minister said. Ms Mayawati clarified that there was no link between the proposed September 28 rally in the state capital and the notification on the Ayodhya issue. The national vice-president of the BSP said Mulayam Singh Yadav and other SP leaders still consider themselves to be the messiah of Muslims. This is not true. The minority community has exposed the SP leaders in the Bahedi byelection where the BSP retained seat from the SP and not only that a Muslim candidate defeated its SP rival, she said. She again clarified that the rally had been called to oppose the SP’s diatribe against Baba Saheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar. |
Bihar gives land for airport New Delhi, September 9 Civil Aviation Minister Shahnawaz Hussain said today that the Patna airport would not be closed down. “Patna airport will not be closed down now .... work is progressing on a war-footing to make this airport the best in the country,” the minister said after the state government sent a communication promising to take swift action on the transfer of land to the Airports Authority of India (AAI). Mr Hussain had last week warned the Bihar government that the airport would be closed down if immediate measures were not taken to improve the safety standards and had said that his ministry could not force the airlines to fly there in “unsafe” conditions. Expressing happiness over the Bihar Government’s follow-up action, he said a sum of over Rs 5.4 crore was in the process of being paid to the state government on account of about five acres of land being transferred to the AAI. For 1.8 acres of railway land which has already been transferred to the AAI, the Civil Aviation Ministry has deposited Rs 4 crore in the account of the Railway Ministry, Mr Hussain said. |
