National Bowling Championship in Delhi

New Delhi, September 5
The third edition of the ColorPlus National Bowling Championship will be held from September 6 at the HotShots bowling alley in South Delhi.

The Rs 60,000 prize money tournament is being held under the aegis of the Bowling Federation of India. Cricket stars Murali Kartik, Nikhil Chopra and Vijay Dahiya will be the guests of honour at the opening ceremony at the 3.30 on Friday.

Besides the top players who compete in the Nationals, anybody over 15 years of age, can participate in the men’s and women’s open categories in the city and a national inter-city winner will be decided.

There is also a corporate category in which Delhi’s business houses will field two teams each. The top teams from six cities will contest in the national finals.

Delhi have traditionally been the stronger contingent at the ColorPlus Championships, followed by Bombay, Chennai and Bangalore.

At the 2000 ColorPlus Championship, Ramesh Rawat of Chennai was crowned the men’s champion while Mohan Lal of Delhi took the second place. Last year, Samir Jain of Delhi won the title while Mohan Lal yet again finished at the second position.

In the women’s section, Jharna Badalni of Bombay won the title at the first edition while Anuradha Sarda of Delhi was the runner-up.

In 2001, Sabeena Salim of Chennai won the title while Anuradha Sarda of New Delhi once again took the second position.

The third edition of the championship, which commenced on August 16, is a six-week event being held in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad with 20 satellite towns in its scope.

Out of the 48 players to be selected from all over the country.

The top 14 finalists from Delhi will compete for the championship finals to be held in Bangalore between September 24 and 29.

Salwan enter Ramjas final

Salwan Boys’ School trounced Salwan Public School by 47 runs and entered the final of the first Ramjas Inter-School Under-17 Cricket Tournament at the Ramjas Sports Complex.

Gaurav Sharma, who scored a swashbuckling unbeaten 77, was adjudged the Man of the Match. Shikhar Dhawan also exhibited explosive batting to notch up 72. The batsmen’s fine job was brilliantly supplemented by bowlers Pradeep Maan (4/45) and Narender Singh (3 for 30) to help Salwan Boys post a handsome victory.

In a league match, Hans Raj Model School beat DAV, Shalimar Bagh, by three wickets. Manu Sharma, who hit 56 runs, was declared the Man of the Match.

Scores: Salwan Boys School: 207 for 3 in 35 overs (Gaurav Sharma 77 n o, 8x4; Shikhar Dhawan 72). Salwan Public: 160 for 8 in 35 overs (Rohan Gulati 43, Vishash Dabas 26, Pradeep Maan 4 for 45, Narender Singh 3 for 30).

DAV, Shalimar Bagh: 196 all out in 34.2 overs (Honey Garg 75, Manas Malhotra 39, Siddhant Mandly 2 for 7, Kumar Abhishek 2 for 24).

Hans Raj Model School: 197 for 7 in 32.4 overs (Manu Sharma 56, Rachit Kapoor 37, Ankur Garg 34, Manas Malhotra 2 for 30, Siddarth Gupta 2 for 35).

FCI to meet Delhi Audit

Five times former champions Food Corporation of India (North Zone) and defending champions Delhi Audit will clash in the final of the Delhi Soccer Association (DSA) Institutional League Championship at the Ambedkar Stadium on Friday at 4 pm.

Delhi Audit and FCI emerged on top in the Senior Division Round-Robin League by collecting 17 points each from seven matches. In the A Division title clash, Punjab National Bank (PNB) will take on Urban Development Ministry (UDM) at 2 pm. Both the teams will be elevated to the Senior Division this year.

PNB defeated Delhi Administration 1-0 on way to the final. Urban Development Ministry got the better of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) 2-0. State Bank of India chief general manager Ram Kumar Thapliyal will be the chief guest at the finals.

The Delhi Veterans Football Club will hold a football tournament for A and B Division clubs from September 7 as a warm-up exercise prior to the DSA Open Clubs League, starting on September 15. Entries close at the Ambedkar Stadium.

Goenka rout Vasant Valley: G D Goenka School beat Vasant Valley 3-0 in the Under-14 age group of the Nivia Football Tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium in the Capital on Thursday. Varun (2) and Swaroop Ahuja were the marksmen.

In another match, Bhawan Sawan Public School prevailed over St. Xavier’s 2-0. Manish and Karan were the goal-getters. Delhi Development Authority Football Academy trounced Navyug Public School 6-1 in the first semi-final of the Under-17 age group. Hambir (3), Adman (2) and Trilok were the goal-scorers of DDA while Anupam reduced the margin for Navyug.

DPS win soccer title: Delhi Public School, Dwarka beat Shiksha Bharati School 2-1 to annex the Inter-School Zonal Sub-Junior Football Tournament for South West (B) 21, played at the Shiksha Bharati School ground, Dwarka.

In a neck and neck match, the teams shared two goals, and the match-winner came at the fag end when Anmol found the mark.

School principal Anurag Ummat gave away the prizes.

Several sportsmen from Faridabad district were awarded with ‘Governor’s Cash Award’ for their brilliant performance in the year 2001-2002. While the total money awarded to players from the district had been about Rs 3.40 lakhs, the skaters from here dominated by sharing an amount of Rs 1.67 lakh as prize money.

The Sports Department of Haryana gave away the cash prizes of Rs 6,000 to Rs 8,000 each at a special function held at Shahbad Markanda town recently. The Department officials announced to give cash rewards of Rs 31,000, 21,000 and Rs 11,000 respectively to winners of the Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals in National level Championship, while medallists in the Nationalist Games would get Rs 51,000, 31,000 and 21,000 respectively. The skators honoured included Neha, Surbhi, Piyush, Saurabh Duggal, Dipesh, Amit, Medha Saini, Deepansu, International Skator Ms Khusboo Saini, Swati, Gaurav, Varun, Hasshal Dhruv, Rishab and Varun.

Sports Minister hails Sachin

Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Vikram Verma on Thursday congratulated Sachin Tendulkar on surpassing Sir Donald Bradman’s record of 29 Test centuries, and on the occasion of playing his 100th Test match at the Oval.

In a message to Sachin, Mr Verma said that by surpassing the record of Bradman, “you have achieved a historic feat. With your current form, I am sure the days are not far when you will surpass the record of scoring maximum centuries in Test matches.”

He also said that “I am confident that you will continue to bring more laurels to the country.”

Chabiganj School lift softball title

Chabiganj School annexed the Delhi State Open Women’s Softball Championship when they beat Kamla Nehru College 11-4 in the final.

Asian Games wrestling champion Satpal and president of the Softball Association of Delhi Prem Nath, also an Arjuna Awardee in wrestling, gave away the prizes.

In this gala occasion, Chabiganj physical education teacher Smt Sharma was also honoured.

Coaches Anoop Kumar and Hardeep Singh also honoured on the occasion.

Motorists to be fined for giving alms

New Delhi: The Delhi Traffic Police has issued directions to all motorists not to encourage or indulge in any activity that hampers traffic flow and jeopardises the safety of road users at traffic junctions.

This direction will specially apply to road junctions and will be enforced up to a distance of 100 metres on each approaching arm from the centre of the junction. Giving of alms to beggars or purchasing wares or goods from roadside vendors at traffic junctions has been construed as an act that is obstructive to the quick discharge of traffic at intersections, DCP (Traffic) Satish Golcha said.

Violation of these directions by motorists will be punishable with a fine of Rs 100 for the first offence and Rs 300 for the second or subsequent offences. The directions were issued to curb and restrict begging, vending and hawking at intersections. The directions would be enforced tomorrow. TNS
