City to have cancer care centre

A cancer care centre would soon be set up in the city by the District red cross to help and accommodate the poor patients suffering from cancer. Industrialists and businessmen would be persuaded to liberally donate for the expensive medicines for the patients. This decision was taken at a meeting of managing body of the District Red Cross here yesterday.

The Deputy Commissioner and president of the society, Mr Anurag Agarwal, said that keeping in view the applications of a large number of poor cancer patients for financial help from the Red Cross Society from time to time, the administration had decided to set up a cancer facility in the city.

The Deputy Commissioner asked the ADC (G), Mr A.K. Sinha to accord priority to this project and ask for and from the industrial houses and other rich philanthropists of the city who are known for their liberal contributions in the past.

Mr Agarwal informed that this cancer care center would be established by purchasing some cheaper land in the outskirts of the city by the society and where efforts would be made to provide maximum facilities to the poor patients suffering from this fatal disease.

In the meeting, the managing body also decided to run an orphanage in Bal Bahwan in Sarabha Nagar in collaboration with a reputed voluntary organisation which was already doing excellent work on this front

Mr Aggarwal informed that during 2000-2001, the society had received a grant of Rs 22 lakh from the Government of India, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for providing artificial limbs, tri-cycles, hearing aid machines etc. to the physically challenged persons in the district. He informed that with this grant and other collections the society had provided 1086 hearing aids, 1255 clippers, 505 upper limbs, 1293 lower limbs and 397 tri-cycles to these persons by organising camps in the district. The Deputy Commissioner said that the society had also applied for more grant of Rs 16 lakh from the Government of India for this purpose, so that each and every such person in the need of these facilities could be accommodated.

With a view to enhance the Red Cross collection of the society, the managing committee has decided to got printed the Divali and New Year greeting cards this year, the returns from these cards would be utilised for providing medicines and other help to the needy people.

The Deputy Commissioner informed that the blood bank of the society was giving good results and providing blood to the needy patients just at are rate of Rs 250 per unit as compare to the Rs 800 per unit being charged by the other blood banks of the city.

Among others who attended the meeting include Mr A.K. Sinha ADC (G), Mrs Rakhi Gupta Bhandari, ADC (D), Mr M.S Jaggi, Assistant Commissioner (G), Mr S.P. Malik, Secretary Red Cross Society and SDMs of all subdivisions.

DMCH surgeon invited to Japan

Dr Kuldip Singh, consultant surgeon, DMCH, has been invited to the Congress of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia 2002 (ELSA) to be held in Tokyo from September 18 to 21.

He is one of the four panellists who will deliver lectures on various aspects of laparoscopic surgery in acute and emergency situations. The topic of his talk is “present scenario of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in acute gall bladder disease”. Besides this, he will also be chairing two scientific and video sessions.

Dr Kuldip Singh is the honorary secretary of the Indian Association of Laparoscopic Surgery and has achieved recognition in the field in India and abroad. He is one of the pioneer laparoscopic surgeons and has a vast experience of difficult gall bladder surgery. He has innovated his novel technique to deal with the difficult situations which has also been acknowledged and appreciated abroad. Traditionally, the acute gall bladder stone disease used to be managed conservatively with medicines and surgery was undertaken after three to four weeks. But, with the advancement of technique and experience, patients with acute pain are taken up immediately for surgery.

He says it is safe to do surgery with in 48 hours of acute pain after which it becomes more risky and dangerous. He has also organised a number of training workshops and delivered guest lectures on the topic at national and international conferences.

He says there is a lot of difference between gall bladder cases in developing countries and those in developed countries. “We have to deal with more difficult cases due to ignorance and delay in the treatment, whereas in developed countries when a patient gets pain he or she is immediately diagnosed and subjected to surgery in a majority of cases.” TNS

Eye donation awareness yatra begins

The fortnight-long eye donation awareness programme has been going on in the country since August 25. In this context, Mansuran Eye Bank, renamed as Punarjot Eye Bank of Punjab, started an eye donation yatra. The ambulance, flagged off by Mr D.R. Bhatti, ADGP, Punjab police, started its journey from Devki Devi Jain College.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ramesh said, “In spite of our best efforts to motivate people to donate eyes, total contribution of the state towards eye donation is less than one per cent. To make people of the state more aware about the concept the mobile van will tour various villages, towns and cities of Punjab and motivate people to donate eyes.”

A social worker, Mr Balwinder Singh Bhattal, and two field officers of the bank are also travelling in the van with publicity material to urge the people to donate eyes.

Chandhok to attend conference

Having earned the distinction of being the only doctor in the world who has introduced homoeopathy in international sports, city based Dr B.S. Chandhok, has been invited to present a paper on “Acceptability of Homoeopathy as Sports Medicine” at a conference to be held at Malaysia.

Dr Chandhok, who is presently the Medical Officer at the Government Homoeopathic Dispensary, Mohali, was the first doctor in the world who took homoeopathy to the field of sports during the Davis Cup International in the year 1993. Since then he has been a member of medical teams attached with the Indian tennis and cricket squads for international matches.

Dr Chandhok, has been invited to present a paper at the 6th International Conference on Homeopathy and Complementary Medicine to be held at Kuala Lumpur on September 8. Infact, the Chairman of the Malaysian Homoeopathic Medical Council, Dr Sri Nick Omar, was very keen that Dr Chandhok, presents his paper so that it can boost research and development of homoeopathy worldwide. He will be the only government doctor from India, to present a paper at the conference.

PAU school, SAN Jain win cricket title

The host, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Punjab Agricultural University, defeated SAN Jain Model Senior Secondary School by five wickets while SDP Senior Secondary School beat Sargodha National Public School by seven wickets to win the under-19 and under-16 title, respectively, in the Ludhiana District Inter-School Cricket Tournament (Zone I-PAU) that concluded at the PAU, ground here today.

In the final, SAN Jain Model Senior Secondary School won the toss and opted to bat first. Vikas and Amit scored 34 and 14 runs, respectively, as they were all out for 104 in 19.2 overs. Jimmy and Vikas of PAU school excelled in bowling, sclaping three and two victims, respectively.

Thanks to Ravi (27), Lalit (24 no) and Karan Bhardwaj (17), PAU school surpassed their rivals’ score after 19 overs, losing five wickets.

Brief scores: SAN Model Senior Secondary School-104 all out (Chinton Sehgal 8, Vikas 34, Amit 14, Jimmy 3 for 21, Vikas 2 for 11 and Suresh 1 for 24).

Government Model Senior Secondary School, PAU-105 for 5 (Ravi 27, Karan Bhardwaj 17, Lalit 24 n.o, Sapan Verma 2 for 17 and Vikas 1 for 26).

In the under-16 final, batting first, Sargodha National Public School were bundled out for a paltry 39 runs in 13 overs which included 14 extra runs.

SDP Senior Secondary School achieved the target, losing just three wickets after 7 overs.

Brief scores: Sargodha National Public School-39 all out (Tinku 2 for 10, Sunny 3 for 12 and Ramesh 3 for 2).

SDP Senior Secondary School-43 for 3 (Sunny 15, Yogesh 1 for 12, Vikas 1 for 16, Pankaj 1 for 10).

Students of Kundan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, bagged seven medals, including three gold, three silver and one bronze in the Punjab State Sub Junior Karate Championship held from August 23 to 25 at Malerkotla.

According to a press note issued by Ms N Khanna, principal, of the school, 16 students of this school took part in different weight categories of this championship and reaped a rich haul of medals and brought laurels to the school. The names of the students are: (gold)- Meghna- 25to 30 kg, Anubha Gupta- 40 to 45 kg and Komal- 45 to 50 kg ;(silver)- Nitin Sharma- 30 to 35 kg, Tanima -40 to 45 kg and Ashima- 45 to 50 kg: (bronze) Shiney- 40 to 45 kg.

District-level tournament

The Punjab School District-Level Tournament for two discpilines lawn tennis and throwball (Ludhiana district) will be held here on September 9. According to a press note issued by the president, the District Tournament Committee (Schools) Ludhiana, lawn tennis tournament will held at the Government Model Senior Secondary School, Cemetry Road, while the venue for throwball will be Ramgarhia Senior Secondary School.

Badminton tourney begins today

The Ludhiana District Badminton Championship to be held in the Shastri Hall, near Guru Nanak Stadium, from tomorrow would be sponsored by Wings Webtech Private Limited, a network marketing company. This was stated by the managing director of the company, Mr Satnam Singh, at a press conference here last evening.

Mr Singh said their company had pledged to promote sport and selected badminton as the target game. The company had taken the initiative to uplift the standard of badminton. Two top players, one boy and one girl, in the sub-junior section would be sponsored by the company up to the national level, he said.

Around 300 shuttlers were expected to take part in the five-day championship. Competitions would be held under various categories.

Mr R.S. Behal, general secretary, Ludhiana District Badminton Association (LDBA), while speaking on the occasion announced that performance during the meet would be taken into consideration while selecting teams for various state championships. Mr Surinder Kapoor, senior vice-president, Mr S.P. Malik and Mr M.K. Chopra, vice-presidents, Mr Ashok Aggarwal, finance secretary, and Mr Gianinder Singh, technical secretary of LDBA, were also present on the occasion.

Mr J.S. Arora, managing director of Win Cable will inaugurate the championship on September 6 at 4 pm.

Kapil Dev to visit city

Kapil Dev will be visting the city on September 8. The ‘Wisden Indian Cricketer of the Century’, Kapil will be here as brand ambassador of Sony MAX TV channel which is hosting its first viewer promotion programme ‘Gully Cricket’ in the city.

Kapil will be visting four locations in the city and play the game with his fans. The fans have to bowl Kapil out to win exciting prizes to be given by MAX. Ludhiana is one of the five cities in India where MAX has been hosting Gully Cricket, other being Nagpur, Pune, Bangalore and Kanpur.
