Dental mela in CDC

Ludhiana, September 2
The inaugural programme of the six-day dental health mela, organised by the Christian Dental College (CDC) was held here today.

Dr N.C. Mann, senior consultant, CDC, in a press statement said the rally on anti-tobacco and oral hygiene was flagged off by Mr S.S.Sandhu, 3rd IRB Commandant, on the occasion. More than 500 students took part in the rally to convey the message of positive oral health and the ill effects of tobacco chewing.

On-the-spot poster making contest and other competitions on skits, folk songs on oral health were held in which the students of BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School bagged the first prize while Wylie School and St. Thomas School were declared 1st and 2nd runners-up, respectively.

More than 500 patients attended the free dental camps. About 100 extractions were done and 50 restorations were carried out. In addition to this, cleaning of teeth was done of 50 patients and 70 patients had been registered for free artificial dentures.

In his inaugural address, Mr D.R.Bhatti, Additional Director General of Police Punjab, the chief guest on the occasion stressed the need of keeping the teeth clean. Only clean oral cavity with clean teeth can maintain good oral and general health, said Mr Bhatti.

While introducing the aims and objectives of the mela, Dr J.L. Joshi, Principal and Deputy Director of the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), said mela was organised to celebrate 10 glorious years of existence of the college. The CDC was the only private college in the state to start the PG course. Dr Joshi also announced that all the patients attending the dental mela would be given concessional treatment at the CDC.

Dr Basant Pawar, Deputy Director of the CMC, inaugurated the oral health exhibition and dietary clinic on the occasion.

Badminton meet from Sept 6

Ludhiana, September 2
The Ludhiana District Badminton Association (LDBA) will organise the District Badminton Championship here at the Shastri Hall, near Guru Nanak Stadium, from September 6 to 10, said a press note issued here by Mr R.S. Behal, honorary general secretary, LDBA.

Competitions in this five-day meet will be held in the men and women, u-10, u-13, u-16, u-19 boys and girls, mixed doubles, veterans above 45 years (men) and above 35 years (women) sections. About 300 shuttlers are expected to take part in this championship. Entries close with Mr Gianinder Singh, sports officer (badminton), on September 5. On the basis of their performance during this meet, players will be selected who will represent Ludhiana in the various state championships.

SDP school win

Despite a fine allround performance by Raghveer (31 runs and 4 for 27), Government Senior Secondary School, Hambran lost to SDP Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, by 50 runs in the Ludhiana District Inter-Schools (Zone I PAU) Cricket Tournament for Boys U-19 being played at the Government Model Senior Secondary School, Punjab Agricultural University ground here today.

SDP school won the toss and opted to bat first. They made 124 after losing 9 wickets in 16 overs and restricted Government Senior Secondary School, Hambran, to 74 for 5 in their quota of overs.

Brief scores: SDP Senior Secondary School 124 for 9 ( Varinder 25, Akash21, Fariq 15, Sukhdev 14, Raghveer 4 for 27, Amrik 2 for 27, Prabhjot 1 for 21 and Jagdeep 1 for 14); Govt Senior Secondary School, Hambran, 74 for 5 (Raghveer 31, Amrik 14, Jagdeep 12, Rahul 2 for 13, Jolly 1 for 14 and Mohd. Javed 1 for 14).

Rural sports mela from Sept 3

Machhiwara, September 2
Rural sports mela at Kot Gangu Rai village will start on September 3, according to Mr Satwinder Singh Kooner, president of the organising unit Shree Guru Nanak Dev Sports Club.

The four-day mela will have disciplines like kabaddi, football, volleyball, tug of war, athletics and bullock-cart races. Mr Mewa Singh, secretary of the club, said that the inauguration ceremony of the tourney would be performed by Sant Paramjit Singh.
