Germany clinch last-minute win

Cologne (Germany), September 1
India’s failure to keep opposition at bay in the final moments cost them a vital point when they lost to Germany 2-3 in the six-nation Champions Trophy field hockey tournament here today.

After fighting back twice to equalise, India conceded a late goal to enable the world champions walk off with a victory.

The Indians equalised twice through Gagan Ajit Singh and Jugraj Singh but the hosts had the last laugh when their captain Florian Kunz, who after an indifferent display in the early part of the match, smashed in the match-winner off a penalty corner in the 67th minute to deny India any point.

Germany, who defeated Pakistan by an identical margin yesterday, now have six points after two wins while India have only one point after playing a 3-3 draw against the Netherlands.

Both the sides missed a few chances to score in the first few minutes of the game. Germany failed to score in the very first minute off a penalty corner when a Kunj shot missed the Indian post.

A couple of minutes later, the German captain, who had a bad day today, almost gave a goal away when he was beaten in a tackle by Deepak Thakur but Prabhjot Singh failed to fire home for India.

The Indians, like they did against Netherlands yesterday, were using the flanks and stretching the German defence which almost paid off. But Prabhjot Singh, playing in the left, wasted three goal-bound moves as he failed to get a correct angle.

The Indian forwards, playing an attacking game, were ably supported by midfielder Bimal Lakra which helped them to create gaps in their opposition defence. But German forwards Oliver Domke, one of the best in his job, alongwith livewire Timo Wess kept the captain Dilip Tirkey and Jugraj Singh at bay.

The hosts missed out on couple of more penalty corners before striking in the 19th minute off the fourth penalty corner.

The Germans adopted a new strategy to take the penalty corner and the change in tactics paid off as Kunj, instead of flicking the ball, passed it to Wess who powered it in with scoop past Indian goalkeeper Devesh Chauhan.

A goal up, the world champions closed ranks and powered the midfield creating more chances.

In the 29th minute Germany was awarded a penalty stroke by Australian umpire David Gentles when Indian captain Dilip Tirkey shoulder charged a rampaging Domke.

But Kunj, continuing with his erratic form, flicked the shot just past the Indian goal post.

With around a minute left for the break, India got two penalty corners but failed to convert any of them. They, however, struck soon after the break.

Bimal Lakra with the ball outside the German circle gave it to Deepak Thakur who tapped it forward to Dhanraj Pillay. Knowing that the German goalkeeper was advancing, Pillay did a reverse flick into the path of the overlapping Gagan Ajit Singh, who struck it past Arnold Clemens for the equaliser in the 38th minute.

Much of the play after that was restricted to the flanks as Germany regrouped. They wasted their fifth penalty corner but on the sixth in the 58th minute found the lead when a Wess’ shot hit the post and rebounded with Christian Wein crashing it into the goal. Though Germany took the lead, India did not lose focus as Thakur, Pillay and Prabhjot Singh continued their efforts to create gaps in the opposition defence.

They finally found one in the 62nd minute which earned them their fourth penalty corner. Specialist Jugraj Singh was right on target as his flick went in with a deflection from a German defender’s stick.

Soon after India attacked and created some sharp chances but the German defence managed to thwart them.

The game again swung Germany’s way when Wess and Domke earned their team’s seventh penalty corner and this time Kunz, was on target to flick in the match-winner and earn Germany full three points.

Indian goalkeeper Devesh Chauhan, anticipating another variation, had dropped to the ground which proved costly for the side. PTI

Pakistan rout Korea 4-1

Cologne (Germany) September 1
Pakistan registered their first victory in the six-nation Champions Trophy field hockey tournament thrashing South Korea 4-1 here today.

Taking advantage of a sluggish Korean defence, Pakistan pumped in two goals each in either side of the break before the Sydney Olympic silver medallists scored a cosolation goal in the final moments.

Korea failed to repeat their earlier performance against the Australians whom they had stunned 3-2 yesterday, and succumbed to the guile of the Pakistani players.

It was probably one of the worst displays by Korea in recent times as their much acclaimed players like Song Seung Tae, Yeo Woon Kon and Kim Jung Chul, architects of the silver medal at the Sydney Olympics, failed to click.

Pakistan’s tactics were right on target from the beginning as they preferred an attacking game over a defensive one following their 2-3 loss to Germany yesterday. PTI

Indian players awaiting ‘official response’

London, September 1
In the continuing battle of attrition, top Indian cricketers today kept the guessing game on, waiting for cricket board’s response to the ICC’s rejection of their demands on the contract issue while giving them more time to reconsider their decision.

A day after the ICC meeting in Dubai, where it decided to give some more time to top Indian cricketers to sign the contract for Champions Trophy, members of the touring team in England were awaiting an “official response” from the BCCI.

“We have only read what has appeared in the newspapers but would rather have an official word on it,” a senior player said today on condition of anonymity.

The ICC Executive Board yesterday expressed its inability to accept the written plea of the Indian players, signed by Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, offering to play in the tournament without signing the controversial Players’ Terms agreement.

BCCI President Jagmohan Dalmiya, who attended the meeting, claimed that ICC had given an assurance that it would look into the Indian players’ issue and discuss it after the Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka, scheduled in the second week of the month.

But the Indian players are asking for more than a mere verbal assurance to commit themselves on the Champions Trophy and sign the Players Terms as it exists today.

“Not only we want a written assurance, we are also unable to decide either way today as most of the players could not be contacted,” said the senior player.

The touring Indian cricketers are having a break from practice today and most have gone their own way, either visiting relatives and friends or just shopping.

“We also don’t want to get too much bogged down ahead of the Oval Test,” said another senior player, pointing out how important it was for the team to concentrate on recording their first Test series win outside the sub-continent in 16 years.

India and England are tied 1-1 in the four-match series with the final Test scheduled to begin at The Oval on Thursday.

The Indians are objecting to a clause in the agreement that requires them to forego their individual endorsements 30 days before and after an ICC event in favour of the official sponsors of the tournament in case of a clash of interest.

The Indians took a conciliatory step forward by offering to convince their sponsors not to air the conflicting advertisments during the 18-day period of the tournament. But they have consistently refused to sign the agreement. PTI

ICC debars Sahara

New Delhi, September 1
In a yet another setback to Indian cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has debarred Sahara India, the official sponsors, from sponsoring the Indian cricket team during the ICC Champions Trophy.

The Test playing countries which met in Dubai yesterday rejected the proposal of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for allowing Sahara to be a sponsor, under special consideration.

According to an ICC statement, its Executive Board took the decision in view of clash of business interests of Sahara’s Air Sahara division and tournament sponsor South African Airways (SAA).

However, the ICC has expressed willingness to consider an alternate proposal from the BCCI and Sahara that does not have the same potential for conflict.

“The merits and impact of any such proposal would be considered should it be received.’’ said the statement accepting the fact that Sahara is a large conglomerate with interests in a wide range of businesses.

Earlier, the council had limited its sponsorship agreement with Emirates Airlines to events outside the ICC Champions Trophy and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003 as such an agreement would also be in conflict with SAA rights.

All ICC Full Member (Test playing) countries along with three representatives of the Associate Members countries were present in the meeting of the Executive Board.

The members argued that the BCCI proposal in its current form would create a direct conflict between Air Sahara and SAA. They heard submissions from both the propose and the ICC’s commercial partner, Global Cricket Corporation,

ICC President, Malcolm Gray said that it was essential that the ICC’s commercial partners were protected.

“South African Airways is an important partner of the ICC and today the ICC members have reaffirmed their commitment to protect its partners rights,” Mr Gray added. UNI

Younis Khan made an unbeaten 87 to help Pakistan cruise to a seven-wicket victory over Kenya in a triangular tournament one-day international today.

The 24-year-old right-hander struck 11 fours and one six after arriving at the crease in the fourth over with the total on 13 for two. He shared an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 127 with Misbah-ul-Haq to steer Pakistan to their victory target in the 39th over.

Ul-Haq ended kn 50 not out, including three fours.

Earlier, Kenya were bowled out for 179 in the 43rd over, with Kennedy Otieno’s 59 providing the only real resistance.

Pakistan beat Kenya in the tournament’s opening match on Thursday before suffering a crushing defeat at the hands of Australia.

Thorpe available for Ashes tour

London, September 1
Troubled England batsman Graham Thorpe has told coach Duncan Fletcher he wants to be considered for selection for the forthcoming Ashes tour of Australia, it was reported here today.

Thorpe (33), decided to take an indefinite break from all cricket after England’s first Test victory over India at the Lord’s in July.

His move was prompted by the break-up of his marriage and discussions about access arrangements to his young children, Henry (5) and Amelia (3).

Last month the England middle-order batsman’s county Surrey said it was “extremely unlikely” Thorpe would play for them again before the end of the domestic season.

But Thorpe has now said he wanted to play for the county champions-elect once more before the current English campaign expires later this month.

“I spoke to Duncan and told him I want to be considered for Australia. Duncan took on board what I had to say and the reasons for my decision and, although he made no commitment to me, it was important for me to let him know where I stand,” Thorpe told The Mail today.

“I know Duncan and Nasser (Hussain, the England captain) will be concerned that the risk in taking me might be too great, but all I can do is try to assure them of my focus and commitment.

“There would be no point in making myself available if I wasn’t utterly convinced that I would be able to cope with the situation,” he said.

“I will also make myself available for Surrey for the final three weeks of the season. It’s important for me to demonstrate that my commitment is real. I’m ready,” Thorpe insisted.

Fletcher and Hussain are due to have a meeting with Thorpe before the final Test against India on Thursday at the left-hander’s home ground of the Oval.

Ahead of Thorpe’s comments, Hussain said: “Graham needs to convince us and himself he can get through a hard Ashes tour.

“Only he knows and then the selectors have to decide whether we feel he has the right mentality to get through the whole winter.”

Earlier this season Thorpe announced his retirement from international one-day cricket in a bid, he said, both to ease his personal problems and prolong his Test career.

Then came the announcement of his break from all forms of the game.

But, whatever doubts there are about his desire to play for England, Thorpe’s record is beyond dispute.

In an era where Australia have dominated the Ashes (England’s last series victory was back in 1986-87), Thorpe has still averaged over 45 against them, having marked his Test debut with a century against the old enemy back in 1993.

Thorpe, capped 77 times by England, has repeatedly proved himself as a big-match performer, scoring the second-fastest Test double hundred against New Zealand in Christchurch in March.

But, thanks to a combination of both personal and back problems, he has only completed one full touring programme out of the past five. AFP

Trescothick recalled

London, September 1
Marcus Trescothick was recalled to the England squad today for the fourth and final Test against India at the Oval on September 5.

Opening batsman Trescothick had not played cricket since breaking a thumb on July 17 until he appeared for Somerset in yesterday’s trophy final defeat against Yorkshire.

He came through that match without apparent discomfort but is one of three players who must prove their fitness ahead of Thursday’s key encounter with the four-Test series level at one apiece.

With all-rounder Andrew Flintoff out with a groin problem, England have included three other players who did not feature in the third Test starting line-up at Headingley where India won by an innings and 46 runs.

Dominic Cork and Ronnie Irani are included in the 14-man squad while fast bowler Stephen Harmison, who made his debut in the second Test at Trent Bridge retains his place in the set-up. Only Harmison goes into the match with no lingering fitness problems. AFP

New York, September 1
While other big names wobbled at the US Open, Venus Williams, Andre Agassi and Jennifer Capriati stayed rock solid, recording quickfire victories to slice further through the Grand Slam draw.

Venus smashed German Martina Mueller 6-1, 6-2 in just 41 minutes yesterday; Capriati crushed fellow American Meghann Shaughnessy 6-2, 6-2 in 56 minutes, while Agassi battered Ramon Delgado of Paraguay 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 in 89 minutes.

Their emphatic victories were in stark contrast to the progress of men’s top seed and defending champion Lleyton Hewitt, who needed five nerve-jangling sets to shake off American favourite James Blake.

The Australian eventually prevailed 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 but the match was not without its uncomfortable moments for the world No. 1.

“I knew it was going to be a bloody tough match out there,” Hewitt said after firing down an ace to seal the win in three hours 34 minutes.

“I went out there with a Davis Cup mentality and just blocked it out.”

Agassi, though, continued his dominant run.

In a rematch of last year’s third-round encounter, also won by Agassi in straight sets, the American kept his opponent off balance and was in control throughout.

Seeking his third title here, he has looked unbeatable through the first three rounds, dropping just 16 games.

“I feel good where my game is at. How can I complain?” he asked. The sixth seed will face unseeded compatriot Jan-Michael Gambill after he clattered Argentine 21st seed Gaston Gaudio 6-0, 6-2, 6-0.

Gambill knows the size of the task ahead.

“There’s nobody on the tour I have more respect for on or off the court,” he said. “He’s a great guy and it’s going to be a tough match. I am excited about it.”

Venus, seeded second this year behind younger sister Serena, stayed on track for a third successive US Open crown with a ruthless victory. “It seemed to go a little quickly...but I guess that’s a nice thing,” she said.

“Still a long way, the final... but it’s getting closer. That’s a good thing.”

While Serena won the French Open in June and deposed Venus at Wimbledon a month later, at least in New York, Venus still rules.

The American has conceded just six games in three matches at Flushing Meadows and is looking in sparkling form. She meets compatriot Chanda Rubin next.

Rubin, seeded 14, finessed her way past US doubles specialist Lisa Raymond with a tight 7-6, 6-4 win.

Capriati, the third seed, produced 17 winners and broke 30th seed Shaughnessy’s serve four times in their match.

The Australian Open champion has conceded just 10 games in three matches this week as she chases her second major of the year.

Her fourth-round opponent will be unseeded fellow American Amy Frazier, who rallied past 16th-seeded Bulgarian Magdalena Maleeva 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Far less convincing than Capriati and Venus on a blustery day six were Monica Seles and Kim Clijsters.

Sixth seed Seles was in the wars again as she fought off a spirited challenge by South Korea’s Cho Yoon-Jeong to reach the fourth round 6-1, 5-7, 6-3.

That much is certain as she meets ninth seed Martina Hingis next.

Hingis, back in action after ankle surgery kept her out of the French Open and Wimbledon, eliminated South African Amanda Coetzer 6-3, 6-4.

Seventh seed Clijsters recovered from a nightmarish start to oust dynamic Russian Vera Zvonareva 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.

The Belgian, Hewitt’s girlfriend, was flattened in the opening set by some impressive power hitting and canny court-craft from the Russian.

But she gradually wrestled control from the 17-year-old to book a clash against 10th seed Amelie Mauresmo of France, who beat Switzerland’s Patty Schnyder 6-1, 6-4.

In the men’s draw, 22nd seed Marcelo Rios of Chile retired in his third-round match with right knee tendinitis, giving 14th seed Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic an easy passage into round four and a clash with Hewitt.

Wayne Ferreira of South Africa beat Spain’s Tommy Robredo 6-1, 6-2, 7-5 to set up a meeting with 20th seed Younes El Aynaoui. The Moroccan beat another Spaniard, Fernando Vicente, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. Reuters

Crowd sets US Open apart

New York, September 1
They are the rowdiest crowds in tennis. They intimidate players, talk on cell phones during play and ignore the pleas for quiet from the umpires.

They drove Greg Rusedski to distraction, to the point the Briton filed a complaint with the supervisor following his second-round win over Thailand’s Paradorn Srichaphan.

They taunted world No 1 Lleyton Hewitt with shouts of “racist” during his third-round victory over American heartthrob James Blake, leaving a stain on yesterday’s feature match.

Welcome to New York and the US Open. To the uninitiated, the 23,000-seat Arthur Ashe Stadium court can seem nothing less than a seething Roman coliseum, a rabid crowd looking for blood.

If you are American and your name is Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Jennifer Capriati or Venus and Serena Williams you are embraced.

If you are anything else you are fair game. “When I get the call to go out there and open up a night session, it sends shivers up my spine,’’ said Agassi following his opening match on Monday. “I love it, there’s no place I’d rather be.”

“I’ve always appreciated the heart and spirit of New Yorkers. There’s a lot of inspiration in the hearts and minds of everybody that’s in this city.’’ There was never any doubt that Blake would have the lion’s share of support for his third-round match, won by Hewitt 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

The rematch produced the entertaining, high-calibre tennis everyone had expected but none of the fireworks of last year’s second-round showdown when the Australian appeared to suggest to the umpire that an African-American linesman was favouring Blake with his calls because of the colour of the two men. While the players had put last year’s controversial clash behind them, some members of the large Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd had not, one spectator shouting, “Don’t let him beat you James, he’s a racist”.

“I just apologised for any fans that were speaking out negatively,” said Blake when asked what he had told Hewitt after the match.”

“That was something I was a bit embarrassed by, when a few fans did that.”

“But that’s what you’re always going to get at the US Open.”

“That makes it a little different from Wimbledon, a little different from any of the Grand Slams.”

“That’s something that for me, it’s fun to be a part of a rowdy crowd, but I like it when it’s a little more just in fun.”

One player the New York crowd has not been able to get to is Hewitt, the 21-year-old proving he is not only the most tenacious competitor on the men’s tour but the most focused as well. “You’re always going to get a few nutters in the crowd,” said Hewitt. Can’t do much about it.” “I didn’t hear much, I was pretty focused.” Reuters

Serena’s ‘stalker’ held

New York, September 1
A German man was charged with stalking tennis star Serena Williams after he was spotted watching her through a fence at the US Open, police said. Just weeks earlier, the same man had been arrested for scuffling with police at Wimbledon.

Albrecht Stromeyer, (34), was taken into custody on Friday after an officer recognised him from a photo given to police by Williams’ manager, said Detective Louis Camacho.

Stromeyer, who lives with his parents in Frankfurt, was charged early yesterday with stalking the tennis star, Camacho said. Authorities said he had been following Williams around the world since June 2001.

He was arraigned in Queens criminal court last night and was being held on $3,000 bail for a September 5 court date. He faces a $1,000 fine and up to a year in prison.

Williams was at the US Tennis Center in Queens for a practice session last day, but she apparently left the grounds before Stromeyer’s arrest became public. She was not scheduled to play yesterday.

Stromeyer has followed Williams to tournaments in Germany, Italy, Britain and France, authorities said. He was arrested July 3 outside the gates of Wimbledon after an altercation with police. AP

DOA felicitates AICS chairman Malhotra
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, September 1
The clout that Prof Vijay Kumar Malhotra enjoys as Chairman of the recently-revived All-India Council of Sports (AICS) with a Cabinet rank, was evident when the who’s who of Indian sports turned up at a reception to felicitate him, organised by Delhi Olympic Association President Raj Chopra, here.

It has become apparent that Mr Malhotra will now play a very vital role in moulding the sports policy, with the exit of the vocal Uma Bharati as the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports. With his vast experience in sports administration, Mr Malhotra is likely to weild a lot of power, as the new Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Vikram Verma will take some time to learn the nitty-gritty of the complex sports setup in the country.

Though the AICS’ brief is to “advise” the government on all important matters concerning sports, Mr Malhotra will be a sort of “super sports minister” now. And people in sports administration are well aware of this latest twist, and no wonder, Raj Chopra’s reception was packed with important sports administrators, including Indian Olympic Association President Suresh Kalmadi, Secretary-General Randhir Singh, Lt. Governor of Delhi Vijay Kapoor, Vice-Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities Tarlochan Singh, veteran sports administrators like VK Ojha, PS Mander, and many others.

Though Mr Kalmadi left after making a brief appearance at the function, Randhir Singh and others stayed back.

Mr Malhotra promised to put his committee in place within the next few days, and hoped to carry all those in charge of Indian sports, along with him. The government has already named former IOA President B Sivanthi Adityan and Haryana Olympic Association President Abhay Singh Chautala as Vice-Presidents. Another 18 to 19 members will be added to complete the AICS body.

Mr Tarlochan Singh recalled the great contribution of Mr Malhotra to sports when he was the Chief Executive Councillor of Delhi in 1974, and how he became a reluctant Chef-de-Mission of the Indian contingent for the Tehran Asian Games in ’74. When there were more than one aspirant for the post, Mr Malhotra’s name was suggested, out of the blue, as it were, and the resultant voting, Mr Malhotra emerged victorious.

“For the first time, a Chef-de-Mission was elected through voting”, Mr Tarlochan Singh reminisced. Mr Malhotra was also the Chef-de-Mission of the Indian contingent for the 1988 Edmonton Commonwealth Games, when Randhir Singh was a member of the shooting squad.

Mr Malhotra promised to do his best to revive the Delhi Council of Sports, which was very active when he was the CEC of Delhi.

Meanwhile, Mr Kalmadi clarified that he abstained from the Arjuna Awards function held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 29, by design “as the government had not bothered to consult the IOA, which is the apex sports body in the country, when various selection panels were formed to pick the award winners”.

Mr Kalmadi said the IOA had no clue about the selection of the award winners and “we did not want to be associated with something about which we had serious reservations”. IOA Secretary-General Randhir Singh also echoed similar sentiments. “Many of the award winners did not seem to deserve the honour”, he said, in a candid tone.

A goal in the last minute by midfielder Charanjit Kumar saved hosts JCT Phagwara the blushes as they managed to hold Border Security Force, Jalandhar, to a 1-1 draw in the concluding fixture of the 16th Punjab State Super League at the JCT Stadium here today. The draw was enough to give JCT the title as the one point gained boosted their tally to 17 while BSF with 16 points finished second pushing Punjab Police to the third spot.

After a lacklustre first half in which both the teams dished out a mediocre affair, BSF shocked the hosts with a late strike through Santosh Kujur whose power-packed piledriver from the right found the far corner giving JCT custodian no chance.

However, with the match drifting towards an anti-climax, JCT’s Charanjit Kumar came up with a gem of an effort as his right-footed volley from the top of the box caught BSF custodian Kameshwar Singh napping. As the ball sailed in, the JCT players rushed to hug their saviour who only a minute earlier was shown the yellow card for a foul on BSF’s Gurjit Atwal.

JCT coach Parminder Singh, in a smart strategy, kept the experienced IM Vijayan on the bench in the first half but when he was introduced midway through the second half, the complexion of the game changed dramatically. First Vijayan’s glancing header nearly resulted in a goal and later he set up some excellent moves for Hardip Gill which, however, could not yield the desired results.

Egged on by a strong home crowd, JCT went on the attack initially. A through pass for Jaswinder, who has rich experience at the national level, saw the latter attempting an angular shot which Kameshwar Singh under the JCT bar managed to punch away at the cost of a corner.

BSF also hit back soon after through Sukhjit Singh, who incidentally was with JCT last season, but he only managed to balloon the ball over the bar off a flag kick.

Sukhjit continued to give the JCT defence a harrowing time in the second half and a well-taken header immediately on resumption struck the upright.

It was in the 67th minute that JCT brought in the veteran IM Vijayan in place of Harvinder(Junior) and the JCT attacks began to look more purposeful.

But on the run of play, BSF stunned the home crowd into silence when Kujur’s piledriver found the far corner with only a few minutes remaining.

The goal spurred the millmen into action and they mounted pressure on the BSF defence . Vijayan despatched a powerful grounder but as luck would have it, BSF defender Amarjit Singh effected a goal-line save.

It was in the last minute that JCT came up with the equaliser, the result of Charanjit Kumar’s volley, which spelt doom for BSF who only a few minutes earlier had been dreaming of lifting the cup.

Mr Rajmohan Singh, himself a keen sports lover who is the Director(Operations) with JCT , gave away the trophies. Also present on the occasion were veteran coach Joginder Singh Walia, who has produced numerous internationals, including Arjuna awardee Inder Singh, former ‘footballer of the decade, Parminder Singh, former internationals Deepak Kumar, GS Parmar, Amarjit Bhatia, and Arjuna awardee Gurdev Singh.

Soccer team needs a physio: coach

Kolkata, September 1
The Indian soccer team, finding it difficult to match tough big-bodied opponents, needs a physiotherapist and medical expert to improve upon its physical strength and address injury problems, according to national chief coach Stephen Constantine.

“Yes,” Constantine told PTI from London when asked if the team required services of a whole time physio and medical expert.

The Anglo-Cypriot coach, however, hastened to add “you cannot do it all overnight. There are a lot of other things we need to do”.

The LG Cup winning side, that put up a rather unimpressive show in their first friendly against Jamaica in England going down 0-3, has improved much in fitness and stamina but still lacks adequate strength to match physically stronger opponents.

The team had, in fact, flied out to Vietnam without a doctor and project director Santo Mitra had to arrange for medicines before boarding the flight. PTI
