MC prepares integrated development programme
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, August 24
The municipal corporation has prepared an ‘integrated development programme’ for development of the city and to ensure qualitative improvement in the civic amenities and infrastructural facilities in the city localities.

The MC Commissioner, Mr S.K. Sharma, said the development of the inner areas of all wards and the over-all progress and development of the city would be ensured. While civic amenities to the localities in outer wards would be provided in a phased manner, the completion of several ongoing projects would help in easing out chaotic traffic conditions.

During a review of the progress of all major development projects and other works relating to roads, water supply and sewerage, Mr Sharma directed all senior MC officials in the Engineering Wing and the O and M Cell to make sure that the projects were completed on schedule and stipulated specification were strictly adhered to.

In order to bring neglected areas at par with others, as many as 208 works of different nature were being undertaken in all the four zones of the city. In Zone A, work had already commenced on 41 projects at a cost of Rs 3.57 crore, while 38 projects (each) were in progress in Zones B and C involving an expenditure of Rs 6.32 crore and Rs 3.83 crore, respectively. Zone D had the biggest share of funds where 91 projects were being executed at an expenditure of Rs 12.02 crore. Water supply and sewerage projects, estimated to cost Rs 1.69 crore, were also in hand in the four zones in addition to the ongoing Rs 34-crore ‘Water Supply Augmentation Project’ and Rs 150-crore HUDCO financed ‘sewerage project’.

Mr Sharma said the ‘Water Supply Augmentation Project’ was near completion. The F&CC had recently approved the installation of another 20 tubewells and 25 submersible pumps in different parts of the city to tide over the occasional complaints of feeble pressure and water scarcity. The project would cost Rs 3 crore.

The MC had also taken effective steps to keep all streetlights functional in the city. At present 48 new projects for providing streetlights in different parts of the city were in progress. The supervisory staff had been instructed to maintain strict vigil on maintenance of streetlight, project entrusted to private contractors.
