Ludhiana, August 21
Continuing to uphold its legacy in patient care and education, Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) added another extension to its endeavour by starting a library for the Department of Surgery on August 19. The library is dedicated to Dr F.C. Eggleston, former professor and HOD of Surgery.

Dr Rajiv Kapoor, Deputy Medical Superintendent, Publicity, in a press statement today said that the department of surgery has been a pioneer in bringing the best and latest to Ludhiana and Punjab, some of them being the first renal transplant open heart surgery, chest lung surgery and paediatric surgery.

The library facility is equipped with the latest aids like multimedia learning and a wide collection of surgical books. Dr F.C. Eggleston, on whose name the surgical library and learning services are dedicated, had joined CMCH in 1955, on the behest of the then Principal, Dr Eileen Snow, to establish the Department of Surgery in 1960. The surgical research laboratory was started which was followed by the successful recognition of CMCH for MS general surgery in 1961. Throughout his 32 years of service Dr Eggleston had been a real support for his trainees, students providing the required help at anytime of the day especially for patient care. Mrs and Dr F.C. Eggleston left India in 1986 and were presently living Pennsylvania in the United States, said Dr Kapoor. This period in CMCH had been the golden era of surgery. His expertise and commitment had put CMC on the map of the world and carved a niche in the Medical Colleges of India. Till date the Department of Surgery had trained 174 surgeons who were spread all over the world winning laurels to the department and CMC.

Dr Kapoor further added that Dr Navneet Choudhary, one of the 110 surgeons trained by Dr Eggleston, is presently professor and head of the department.

Dr Navneet stated on the occasion as new developments in science were taking place at a rapid pace, Internet was a better mean to keep abreast with the latest.

He expressed his gratitude and sincere thanks to donors and friends of CMC. The invitees included the faculty and staff of CMC, Dr Eggleston’s trainees, students and Donors.

Dr Eggleston was fondly remembered by Dr Navneet Choudhary, Dr D.S. Virk, Director, Punjab Health Systems Corporation, Dr T.M. Jaison, Acting Director, Dr J.L. Joshi, deputy Director, Dr Basant Pawar, Deputy Director, Dr Mohan Verghese, Principal, CMC and Dr Sunil K. Singh, professor of surgery, CMC, for his commitment and expertise in patient care and teaching.
