India draw match against Essex
Chelmsford, August 17 Faced with a near impossible target of 565 in 60 possible overs, Essex were helped by opener Richard Clinton (53) in their effort to save the match. At the break, Andy Flower was batting on 23 with Ravinder Bopara on 3 after Indians declared their second innings at 327 for six at lunch. Essex had made 279 in their first innings replying to Indians’ 516. Clinton batted sensibly and faced 104 balls hitting six fours before he was the second batsman out with the total on 97, caught off the bowling of part-time spinner Virender Sehwag. Harbhajan Singh, who had mesmerised the Essex batsmen to bag seven wickets in the first innings, added one more scalp when he had James Middlebrook (24) caught at forward short leg. Earlier, resuming at their overnight score of 231 for 2, the Indians batted comfortably in the morning session to extend their lead to 564 runs. Sign contract, says BCCI
New Delhi, August 17 BCCI President Jagmohan Dalmiya had written a letter to the team, saying that the situation could go beyond control if the players did not sign the contract now for the Champions trophy to be held in Sri Lanka, board sources said. In a desperate move to ensure participation of top cricketers including Sachin, Saurav and Dravid in next month’s event, the BCCI has asked the players to sign the “players’ Terms form”. The board said it would inform the ICC that assurances and agreements were extended only for the Champions Trophy and it would take up the matter with the apex body by October 31. The contractual obligation to send its best team to Sri Lanka has put the BCCI in a corner. All the affiliated boards have signed the agreement which lasts till 2007. The Indain players have sought more time to reconsider their decision, sources said, after initially rejecting the BCCI’s request. MUMBAI: The “BCCI is hopeful that all the players will sign the contract. The players should realise that if they play in big tournaments then only they will get more sponsors,” BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah said in an interview to the BBC Hindi service. Mr Shah, rejecting the proposal of compensation for individual players, said it was very difficult to ascertain the exact losses incurred by them. UNI |
Lanka beat Pak Tangiers, August 17 Earlier, Sanath Jayasuriya fought an almost lone battle against Pakistan’s bowlers making a brilliant 97 as his team limped to a disappointing 242 all out. Jayasuriya’s typically explosive innings ended in the 35th over when Wasim Akram trapped him lbw with his second delivery after being recalled to the attack and it immediately ended Sri Lanka’s hopes of a commanding total on a good pitch. Mithali makes history
London, August 17 Mithali, playing in only her third Test innings, dominated the proceedings throughout the day with her unbeaten 210 and helped the team take a 112-run first innings lead over the home side. At stumps, Jhalan Goswami was accompanying her on 54. During the marathon 10-hour knock, which was notable for the purity of technique and tremendous stamina, Mithali faced 400 balls and hit 19 boundaries. Mithali’s monumental score was only the fifth double century in the history of women’s Test cricket and it bettered Australian K.L. Rolton’s unbeaten 209 scored against England at Leeds last year. Incidentally all the five double centuries have been scored against England. Mithali also became the first Indian to score a Test double century. Former player Sandhya Agarwal had missed the mark by 10 runs at Worcester during the 1986-87 series against England. Mithali also shared two century partnerships — first a 144-run stand for the fourth wicket with Hemalata Kala (62) and then an unbroken seventh wicket stand of 148 with Jhalan Goswami — to help India to a huge total. Mithali was helped by some poor fielding by English eves who missed on three chances, although all of them came after she had passed the 150-mark. England’s woes were compounded as their poor overrate extended play 40 minutes beyond scheduled close. Brief Scores: England 333. India 445 for six (H. Kala 62, A. Chopra 52, M. Raj 210 batting, J. Goswami 54 batting; Connor 2-64). PTI |

Brahim Boulami smashes steeplechase record
Zurich, August 16 Boulami took control of the race from the gun and led throughout, finishing strongly to slice more than two seconds off the mark of 7:55.28 he set in Brussels last year. Kenya’s Stephen Cherono and Paul Keoch trailed in second and third. “I came here to break the world record,” said Boulami. “I wanted to do better than last year. I am in good shape and I was prepared for this moment. “The pace was slow at one stage, but I told the pacemakers to ‘go, go, go’ and they did. It’s fantastic. “The Kenyans are not dominating at the moment but I’m sure they will try to come back and get the record again,” he added. When he first broke the record last year Boulami became the first non-Kenyan to hold the steeplechase record since 1976. The 30-year-old Moroccan has made swift progress since finishing a disappointing 10th in last year’s world championships in Edmonton. There was a shock for world and Olympic champion Maurice Greene as he was beaten into fifth place in the 100m final, won by a back-in-form Tim Montgomery in 9.98 seconds. Fellow American Coby Miller was second in 10.00 and European champion Dwain Chambers took third in 10.05 seconds with the added bonus of beating Commonwealth champion Kim Collins, who was fourth. Greene clocked 10.10 seconds. In fact the heats of the 100 m, helped by following winds, had produced faster times, Montgomery winning the second in a blistering 9.93 seconds, the second-fastest time in the world this year. Behind him, Chambers ran the fastest race of his life, 9.94 seconds. Aside from Boulami’s majestic performance, the Weltklasse — the biggest budget meeting of the season — as normal produced a host of fastest times of the year on a warm night in the packed Letzigrund Stadium. One came in the 400m hurdles when Felix Sanchez proved again he is the class act this year with a smooth victory in 47.35 seconds ahead of James Carter of the USA. Newly crowned European champion Stephane Diagana of France was a tired fourth. Sanchez, the world champion from the Dominican Republic, also kept alive his hopes of a share of the 50 kg of gold to athletes who win at all seven Golden League meetings. Marion Jones is another with her eyes on the jackpot after she remained unbeaten this year with a 10.89 seconds clocking to win the 100 m. But her real challenge will come next Friday in London when she faces Zhanna Pintusevich-Block, her conqueror at the world championships last year, for the first time this season. World champion Gabriela Szabo put defeat at the European championships behind her by producing a decisive sprint finish to beat American Suzy Favor-Hamilton in the 1,500 metres. The Romanian won in a time of 3 minutes 58.78 seconds, fastest in the world this year, to the American’s 3:59.10. Olga Yegorova, who caused such controversy last year when she was banned then reinstated after testing positive for the endurance-boosting drug EPO, trailed in a listless 10th. AFP |
IM Vijayan, Joe Paul Ancheri join JCT Chandigarh, August 17 While Vijayan is already at Phagwara and is assisting the mill men in the 16th Punjab State Super League currently in progress, Ancheri is enjoying a short break after playing a stellar role in India’s title win in the LG Cup in Vietnam. According to JCT’s chief coach Sukhwinder Singh, who is also the technical director for the camp scheduled to be held in preparation for the England tour, Ancheri is expected to arrive at Phagwara in a few days and thereafter he will proceed to Delhi to join the national camp under the watchful eyes of national coach Stephen Constantine. The Indian team will leave for England on August 25 and will play matches against a Jamaican outfit on August 29 and September 1. Ancheri is also likely to don national colours during the forthcoming Asian Games at Busan. It may be recalled that the two players, arguably among the best in the national circuit, were earlier with JCT when the mill men won the inaugural edition of the National Football League in 1996. Vijayan also helped JCT clinch the Federation Cup during his stint in Punjab at that time. Before joining East Bengal last season, both Ancheri and Vijayan were with FC Kochin. It has often been said that the two make an inseparable pair and also like to play for the same club. Last season Joe Paul Ancheri had a lean spell after he was saddled by an injury sustained during a fracas in the IFA Shield at Kolkata when players of the visiting Brazilian side Palmeiras were engaged in a free-for-all. The club was later disqualified but Ancheri remained bed-ridden for quite sometime. Vijayan, who also had a short stint in films, has been among the top strikers. He is again back to what he enjoys doing best — scoring goals. In the ongoing Punjab State Super League, he was one of the scorers for JCT in the match against Punjab State Electricity Board at Hoshiarpur on August 14. JCT won the match 4-2. JCT’s assistant coach and former footballer of the decade Parminder Singh asserted that with the induction of new faces, the club would make an impact at the state and national level. JCT have won all their matches in the super league so far. |
Vishwanathan Anand loses third game
Mainz (Germany), August 17 Having drawn the first two games, the 32-year-old Indian, a former world champion himself, is down 1-2 and would have to work really hard to make a comeback in the remaining five games of the contest. For Anand the brighter side in the remaining games is the fact that he has three whites that might help him to crack Ponomariov’s defences and salvage his reputation as the world’s finest player in the rapid chess. Ponomariov opened with the king pawn in the third game and, quite surprisingly, Anand opted for the sharp sicilian sveshnikov defence that is in vogue these days. The game progressed along established theoretical manoeuvres and Anand maintained a dynamic balance as the game entered the middle- game phase. Ponomariov gained the upper hand after Anand went for a dubious strategic plan that allowed the Ukrainian’s knight to make a foray to the sixth rank, well aided by a central pawn. By the 26th move itself, the players arrived at a queen and minor pieces endgame where Ponomariov’s superior deployment of forces enabled him to exert pressure against Anand’s weak queenside pawn. In a desperate bid to wriggle out of this mess, Anand sacrificed a pawn on the kingside to open up the position but it only worked to Ponomariov’s advantage. Going for the kill, Ponomariov pocketed another pawn with excellent piece play and then caught Anand’s king in a mating net to romp home in 44 moves. Earlier in the first game of the match, Anand was lucky to get a draw from a seemingly lost position. The players on this occasion fought out the duel in a Caro Kann defence game where Anand, playing black, went for castling on the queenside and had to defend for long as Ponomariov, quite nonchalantly, launched an offence against the king. Anand went for the exchange of pieces to ease the pressure but could not really match Ponomariov’s persistence for an attack. With a precisely worked out plan, Ponomariov ripped open Anand’s queenside and was cruising to a victory when suddenly an oversight caused him dearly on the 34th move. PTI |

CGA unrolls red carpet for Donato Chandigarh, August 17 Donato told the select gathering that “Golf is like music. It has the power to make people happy” . He said, finally a dream had come true. Five years back, he had interacted with CGA officials on how to develop the golf range. And today they deserved a pat on their back for doing “this wonderful job.” Donato also underlined his aim — to uplift the standard of golf by helping the country in using its own abilities. Donato stressed that the academies gave one the opportunity to do something big. He felt grateful to Amandeep Johl for making all this happen. Donato said, he wanted to be a friend “and once an Italian becomes a friend, it is forever”. Later talking to this reporter, Donato said, compared to European standards, the Indian golfers were quite good at the individual level. He took the names of Chiranjeev Milkha Singh, Amandeep Johl, Harmeet Kahlon and said they and many more were leading names. But he felt that golf was not organised professionally in India. He said: “Talent is here, the will is here, and the need of the hour is to develop academies as the one here. Only then can we reach our goal”. Andrea, the golf professional at Arzaga Golf Academy, Brecia, Italy, who assists Donato, said this kind of golf training, was being done for the first time in Asia. Donato had earlier trained golfers in Australia, Europe and other parts of the world. Earlier after reaching the CGA range at around 5.45 pm, Donato accompanied by his aide and professional golfer Andrea Zanardelli took a round of the golf academy along with CGA officials led by Mr Desh Prem Azad, its president. The International golfer from Chandigarh, Amandeep Johl with whose preliminary initiative the visit of Donato could be made possible said: “Chandigarh is lucky to have a person of the stature of Donato.” Earlier Mr Azad said the CGA today felt proud to have Donato with whose ideas this CGA Driving Range could take the present shape. |
