UT IAS officer faces dismissal

A UT cadre IAS officer, Dr Dilraj Kaur, earlier posted as Assistant Commissioner (under training), Chandigarh, faces termination from service for alleged misconduct and for carrying out activities unbecoming of an officer during her one-year tenure in Chandigarh.

Rain brings cheer all around
Chandigarh, August 13
Widespread rain in the city and its surrounding areas brought down day time temperatures and broke a long dry spell. For once no one minded the day long rain which forced residents indoors, reduced activity to the minimum and affected businesses.

Mittal re-elected PUTA president
Chandigarh, August 13
The sitting president, Prof P.K. Mittal (Zoology Department), was re-elected president of the Panjab University Teachers Association here today. A total of 525 votes were polled out of the total 585.

Leaking roofs force PGI OTs shut
Chandigarh, August 13
Come rains and the problems of the PGI are compounded. The leakage on the fifth floor of Nehru Block has rendered some of the PGI operation theatres (OTs) unfit for use, while six OTs in the New OPD Block remain unused, as day-care surgery is yet to be opened there. The continuous rain that lashed the city today exposed the leakage.

POLLUTION PANGS
Fish population declines in Ghaggar
Panchkula, August 13
Excessive pollution in the upper stream of the Ghaggar here has had its toll on the fish population. With pollutants from the crusher zone in Burj Kotian village here and industrial effluents from paper and sugar mills in Dera Bassi, Lalru, Patiala and Patran being discharged into the river, the aquatic life has been adversely affected.

Slow carriageway coming up along NH-21
Chandigarh, August 13
On a recommendation of the Chandigarh traffic police, the Engineering Wing of the Chandigarh Administration is building a slow carriageway along the section of the National Highway 21 passing through the city. The 18 foot-wide slow carriageway will run from the Zirakpur border to the SAS Nagar border.

HE deadlock between cable operators and residents’ welfare associations of different sectors is cause for serious concern. Efforts should be made to end the impasse in the larger interests of both consumers and cable operators. The residents’ welfare associations in Chandigarh, SAS Nagar and Panchkula have protested against ‘overcharging’ by the operators.

HE IQ of city’s residents can be measured truly by the number of bookshops dotting its up-market commercial centres. That way the presence of several bookstores in Chandigarh is certainly a tribute to the enlightened denizens of this designer city — in sharp contrast to the rest of the towns in North India (except perhaps one bookshop in Ludhiana and two in Shimla), that boast of a high commercial and industrial potential but cannot show up more than a few well-managed modern bookshops.

Traffic restrictions on I-Day
Chandigarh, August 13
In view of the Independence Day celebrations on August 15, the Chandigarh police has imposed restrictions on the movement of traffic on certain roads in the city. Diversions on certain sections of roads leading to the Parade Ground and the Punjab Raj Bhavan will remain effective till the end of the function.

Adventure in the hills

A bunch of boisterous boys for whom adventure is a visual life from Bay Watch, X-Files Michael Schumacher’s car races and programmes of the dare-devilry kind from AXN, a weakened adventure camp in the Shimla Hills was not just a sobering experience but also one which sensitised them to the gentle demands of nature.

PUSU activists go on fast

Death sentence for 2 in murder case
Panchkula, August 13
The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Panchkula, today pronounced death sentence to two youths involved in the murder of a 10-year-old girl in May, 2001, here today. The duo-Rakesh and Abdul Khalil, were also sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for raping the 10-year-old before killing her.

Life term for four men
Chandigarh, August 13
Nearly six years after the incident, the four accused who had murdered a former MLA Bachittar Singh, were sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court here today. Jugraj Singh, Kulwinder Singh, Kuljit Singh and Inderpreet Singh were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by the UT Additional and Sessions Judge, Ms Sneh Prashar. A fine of Rs 10,000 was also imposed on them.

City-based singing sisters Simran Jeet and Tripat Jeet Kaur have been pleasantly surprised with a sudden encounter with fame. Only last year they had marked their presence on the folk music circuit of the region, with their maiden album, titled “Lacha Multan da”.

Nostalgia of the hills was brought alive on the small stage of Bhaskar Rao Auditorium in Pracheen Kala Kendra, which was the venue of a cultural presentation by a troupe from Sirmaur. Recreating the magic of mountains in melody were six young dancers comprising the Sanskritik Dal Baunal from Sirmaur.

Anil wins gold in judo meet

Anil wrapped the below-50 kg section title in the two-day Chandigarh Sub-Junior Judo Championship, which concluded here this evening at Ajit Karam Singh International Public school, Sector 41. Silver medal in this section went in favour of Vikram while Vinod and Rajan got bronze medals.

Mongia to be honoured

The Chandigarh Administration today added two more names to the list of persons who will be honoured on Independence Day. The additional list has the name of left-handed batsman Dinesh Mongia who is presently on tour with the Indian cricket team.

Admn to release Rs 7 cr grant to MC
Chandigarh, August 13
The Administration has decided to release the held-up Rs 7.035 crore grant under the plan head to the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh. The Chandigarh Administration has sent a letter regarding clearance of the grant due since last month to the MC. The decision followed the MC producing the utilisation certificate before the Chandigarh Administration.
