Cong for transparent govt, development: Soni Srinagar, August 10 Talking to mediapersons at the end of the three-day tour of the Kashmir valley, Ms
Soni, AICC general secretary, accompanied by senior leaders Ahmad Patel and Digvijay Singh, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, reiterated the party’s demand for elections under Governor’s rule in the state. “The notification for the elections is yet to come and we hope for a smooth conduct of the elections in the state”, Ms Soni commented. She lamented that there was no development and no roads and unemployment and corruption was rampant in the state. The Congress leaders had addressed a public meeting yesterday on the occasion of a religious congregation at Malangam near Bandipore in Baramula district of North Kashmir. “The Congress has been successful in resolving the problems in Punjab and Assam”, she said, adding that the party leadership was hopeful of resolving the issues in the militancy-hit state, where the people were suffering a lot for the past over 12 years due to militancy. The Congress was for free and fair elections in the state, which could be possible only under the Governor’s rule in the state, she claimed. She pointed out that the Chief Election Commissioner of India had directed the state government to provide same security for leaders of all political parties ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections, but lamented that the same was not adhered to by the ruling National Conference government. Ms Soni claimed that about 4000 leaders of the National Conference were provided security against the odd 54 leaders of the Congress. Ms Soni said Congress president Sonia Gandhi would be addressing election rallies in almost all 13 districts of the valley. “We are taking these elections very seriously. We will be fighting to win,’’ she said. Asked why Pradesh Congress Committee president Ghulam Nabi Azad had not resigned from the Rajya Sabha even though he was elected with the support of the National Conference, she said Mr Azad had offered to resign immediately after he was given charge of the Jammu and Kashmir Congress. ‘’But the high command asked him to continue since he was having security as an MP. Otherwise he too would find it difficult to move around without security because of the discriminatory attitude of the state government against opposition parties,’’ Ms Soni added. She alleged that during the National Conference’s tenure in the state, there was no development and public ignored. She refused to comment whether the Congress would fight the elections alone or form an alliance with like-minded parties. |
Sikhs’ plea on J&K poll Jammu, August 10 In a statement, issued here yesterday, the vice-president of the front, Mr Sukhdev Singh Mastana, said under the present security scenario, the government’s claim of conducting a free and fair poll was untenable. He said the Deputy Prime Minister and other central leaders were befooling people without understanding the ground realities in Jammu and Kashmir. The Sikh leader said in case the government and the Election Commission were determined to conduct the poll, it should be held under central rule. |
