Hurriyat sticks to poll boycott decision
Srinagar, August 10
The Hurriyat Conference today ruled out participation in the forthcoming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, but decided to convene a meeting of its general council on Monday to discuss the invitation for talks extended by leader of the Kashmir Committee Ram Jethmalani.

THE entire nation has been watching with dismay and disgust the naked show of political games of favouritism, nepotism and shady practices of the Union Petroleum Ministry headed by Mr Ram Naik. Equally disquieting has been the obvious insensitivity of the powers-that-be to the startling disclosure of allotment of petrol pumps and gas agencies to his partymen, loyal functionaries and power-sharing co-brothers.

No bail for absconding IG
Panchkula, August 10
The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Panchkula, Mr H.S. Bhangoo, today rejected the anticipatory bail application filed by Haryana Inspector General (Prisons), Ravi Kant Sharma. The latter is wanted by the Delhi police in connection with the Shivani Bhatnagar murder case.

No diplomatic status for Agnihotri: USA
Washington, August 10
The USA has ruled out any diplomatic status for Ambassador-at-large for Overseas Indians Bhishma Kumar Agnihotri, saying there are certain criteria for according such a status. It is reliably learnt that the State Department conveyed its decision to the Indian Embassy here in response to such a request made by it.

Madarasas in Pakistan receive more than £ 800 million a year - equivalent of the country’s income tax revenue — through charitable donations mainly from wealthy Britain-based Muslim businessmen.

Farmers resorting to canal water theft
Chandigarh, August 10
More and more farmers in Haryana are believed to be resorting to theft of canal water as a result of the drought situation in the state. Sources in the state government’s Irrigation Department said that 1321 cases of water thefts had been recorded since mid-June when personnel of the department had started patrolling in the vulnerable areas along with policemen to prevent possible resistance by farmers indulging in water thefts.
