Lab at Lok Nayak Hospital to determine Thalassaemia

New Delhi, August 8
A genetic laboratory would be set up at the Lok Nayak Hospital for determining the Thalassaemia Major status of foetus.

This facility is currently available only at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS.) The Health Minister, Mr AK Walia, on Wednesday said the Government of NCT of Delhi has already set up a Thalassaemia Cell in the Directorate of Health Services.

Under this Cell, blood test is carried out during pre-natal check-up on pregnant women visiting the Lok Nayak Hospital, GTB Hospital and DDU Hospital.

If the pregnant mother is found to be Thalassaemia Minor, her husband’s blood is also tested. In case the husband is also found to be Thalassaemia Minor, then foetus is tested. The Minister said free treatment is extended to the patients in those three hospitals. Those looking for treatment will be much relieved by the news.

DTC drive past Bank of India, earn full points

Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) rode to a facile 4-0 victory against Bank of India in a Group B round-robin league match of the Delhi Soccer Association Annual Institutional Football League Championship at the Ambedkar Stadium in the Capital.

Defender Rajesh Bisht headed home the first goal for DTC in the 9th minute while Dhirender Singh enhanced the lead (2-O) in the 16th minute. A minute later, Raj Sharma made it 3-0, while the fourth goal was netted by Dhirender Singh seconds before the long whistle (4-0).

In another Group B league match, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) hit back to hold Delhi Administration to a 2-2 draw.

Mid-fielder Ram Singh put Delhi Administration in the lead in the 10th minute and Rajeev Bhalla added the second goal in the 30th minute. After gaining a two-goal lead, Delhi Administration adopted a casual approach in the second half, and paid a heavy penalty for their laxity when RBI fought back to equalise and snatch a valuable point.

Mid-fielder Shailender Rawat scored both the goals in the 55th and 60th minutes to draw level for RBI (2-2).

Friday’s fixtures: N Railway vs Employees State Insurance Corporation (2.13 pm); Oriental Bank vs Food Corporation of India (North Zone) 4.30 pm.

Sachin Dhakka shines with bat

A dashing batting display by Sachin Dhakka, who scored 81 runs studded with ten fours and three sixes, and deadly bowling by Kapil Rana (4 for 11) and Harpreet Singh (3 for 14), enabled Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji Cricket Academy beat Apeejay College, Dwarka by 111 runs and collected two points in the SG Cup Cricket Tournament, played at the Guru Harkishan Public School ground, Vasant Vihar in the Capital. Kapil Rana was adjudged the Man of the Match.

Sachin’s swashbuckling knock was appreciated by the crowd. Putting into bat first Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji Academy put a handsome score.

Scores: Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji Academy: Sachin Dhakka 81, Sandeep 38, Mohan 39, Sharabjas Minhas 5 for 48).

Apeejay College, Dwaraka: 140 all out in 28.4 overs (Jetender Pal Singh 61, Kapil Rana 4 for 11, Harpreet Singh 3 for 14).

Home town awaits hockey’s golden girl

The arrival of Mamta Kharab - a key member of the Indian Women Hockey team, which won the gold medal at the recently concluded 17th Commonwealth Games, held in Manchester, is being eagerly awaited in the city where she learnt the basics of the game and pursued her studies.

According to Mamta’s family sources, she is likely to arrive at Rohtak on August 10 for the first time after her return from Manchester, where she helped her team win laurels. A large number of telephone calls, most of them from mediapersons and sports enthusiasts, continue to receive at Model Town residence of Mamta’s parents.

In the meantime, several organisations are planning to organise felicitation functions to honour Mamta. The president of the Haryana Olympic Association, Abhay Singh Chautala, has already announced that the medalists of Commonwealth Games belonging to Haryana will be honoured appropriately. But the local DAV school has taken a lead in this direction by deciding to host a felicitation function to honour Mamta Kharab, who netted the match winner in semifinal against New Zealand and scored the golden goal in the final against England, on August 13, according to the Principal, Rajesh Jain. The function will be held at DAV School’s new campus, situated on Rohtak-Delhi Road. In Mamta’s home state, perhaps this will be the first of many functions lined-up for her in the next couple of days. The District administration is also planning to honour her, it is reliably learnt.

Yusuf Ali shares top spot

Yusuf Ali set the course ablaze despite the afternoon drizzle with a five-under 67 to join Jyoti Randhawa and Gaurav Ghei at the top of the leader board on the second day of the Rs 10 lakh South Zone Golf Championship, the second stop of the Indian PGA Golf Tour, at Bangalore, according to information available in Delhi.

Yusuf Ali, the 26-year-old Kolkata Pro, who teed off from the 10th tee, sunk six birdies and made only one bogie. Jyoti Randhawa and Gaurav Ghei carded three-under 69 on the second day to find their names at the top, along with Yusuf Ali, with an overall five-under 139. Five Pros made the cut which was applied at nine-over 153.

The other two overnight leaders, Vijay Kumar and Indrajit Bhalotia, met with mixed fortunes. Vijay Kumar had an easy round, carding a two-under score for an overll 140 while Bhalotia found the going tough with a bogey on the very first hole.

Top women golfers participate in trials

Eight top women golfers participated in the first two rounds of the National Ladies Golf Team Selection trials for participation in the Esperito Santo Trophy World Amateurs Championships in Malaysia this year.

The trials were held at the Jaypee Greens Golf Course in Greater Noida, which is Asia’s third longest golf course at 7343 yards from the black tee, and 5949 yards from the ladies’ tee. The Indian Golf Union Ladies Section is conducting six rounds of trials for the team selection. The IGU Ladies Section selectors, including Harji Malik and Nonita Lal Qureshi, observed the performance of the golfers. The golfers now move to other courses for the remaining four rounds.

The golfers who participated in the trials were: Vandana Agarwal (Kolkata), Pragya Mishra (Delhi), Shruti Khanna (Delhi), Sanam Merchant (Mumbai), Irina Brar (Chandigarh), Anjali Chopra (Delhi), Parinita Grewal (Chandigarh) and Mayali Talwar (Delhi).

Irina Brar, who led the field on day one with 3 over, followed by Pragya Mishra at 6 over level par, continued her good work on day two, when she returned a score of 4 over, accompanied by Shruti Khanna, who submitted the same score for the day.

Swim Meet

The 3rd Trans-Yamuna Swim Meet, organised by the Shakarpur Swimming Club, will be held at the Babu Ram School swimming pool, Bhola Nath Nagar, Shahdara, on August 14 and 15. Only swimmers residing in the trans-Yamuna areas are eligible to participate. Only swimmers and divers to participate in the first Triangular Championship to be held at DLF School, Sahibabad, on August 17 and 18, will be selected during the trans-Yamuna Meet.
