Life term for murder
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, August 8
Makhan Singh ‘Makhni’(21) of Ror village has been sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment, on the charge of killing Sukhwinder Singh of the same village, by Sessions Judge V. B. Handa. A fine of Rs 2000 has also been imposed upon him.

Delivering the verdict, Mr Handa held that ‘‘it has been proved by overwhelming evidence on the record that accused had inflicted a fatal dagger blow to Sukhwinder, caused injury intentionally and knowingly that the same shall cause death’’.

However, the court acquitted co-accused Harnek Singh (22), also of Ror village, with remarks that his presence at the site of crime appeared to be doubtful.

Sukhwinder was murdered on October 20, 1999, in Ror village and following a complaint by Mr Gurdev Singh, father of the deceased, an FIR was registered against Makhan Singh and Harnek Singh at the Basti Jodhewal police station under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC.

The father of the deceased contended that on the fateful day, he, along with his son and Angrej Singh were going towards the house of Gurmail Singh.

When they reached near the turning of the old gurdwara, Makhan Singh, who were already present there, started abusing and said that Sukhwinder would be taught a lesson for insulting him.

After this, Makhan Singh attacked Sukhwinder with a dagger. Harnek Singh was also present there, alleged the complainant.

According to prosecution, there was altercation between Sukhwinder and Makhan Singh on the fateful day in Khawajkay village.

The matter was, however, resolved by some villagers, who even slapped the accused. Feeling insulted, the accused killed Sukhwinder to take revenge.
