Our Correspondent

Noida, August 4
Due to the phenomenal increase in asthma cases, especially among children and cigarette-smoking adults, a free medical check-up camp was organised at Final Diagnosis in Sector-31, Noida, today.

According to Dr Alok Bhatia, who was closely associated with the camp, about 250 patients were examined at the camp. Asthma is prevalent among 10 per cent of people while among children, it ranges between 20 to 30 per cent and is growing rapidly.

An eminent Pulmonologist and child specialist, Dr Alok Bhatia said “an all India legislation is needed against gutka and smoking because people can still buy gutka from the neighbouring states, which defeats the very purpose of the ban”.

At the camp, patients were given information regarding the detection of the disease and its medical management. The proper use of inhalers was demonstrated to the patients. Pulmonary and other related tests were also done at the camp.

This was the first time in Noida that equipment was used to detect smokers. Hereditary factor, according to Dr Alok Bhatia, was the predominant factor for asthma.

Narender, Ashutosh star in Salwan victory
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, August 4
A strokeful century by Narender Singh (113, 15x4, 2x6) and a devastating bowling spell of 7 for 20 by left-arm-spinner Ashutosh Sharma helped Salwan Boys School beat St Marks School, Janakpuri, by 162 runs and entered the semi-final of the first Prabhu Dayal Memorial Cricket Tournament at the Salwan Public School ground in the Capital.

Salwan Boys won the toss and opted to bat. Thanks to the batting pyrotechniques of Narender Singh, Salwan Boys were able to pile up a handsome total. Narender Singh’s powerful strokeplay opened the sluice gate for the runs to flow in cascades. Narender Singh was so vicious in punishing the ball that he cracked 15 boundaries and two huge sixes.

Salwan Boys were all out for 243 in 33.4 overs, and then dismissed St Marks School for a paltry total of 81 in 20.3 overs.

The St Marks batsmen had no clue as to how to tackle the spin trick of left-arm spinner Ashutosh Sharma, who finished with 7 wickets for 20 runs.

Narender Singh was adjudged the man of the match while Deepak Rai was declared the best batsman. Ashutosh Sharma got the best bowler award.

Scores: Salwan Boys: 243 all out in 33.4 overs (Narender Singh 113, Deepak Rai 37, Love Thapar 3 for 49).

Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, August 4
In a repeat of last year’s final, holders Delhi Division will clash against runners-up Headquarters in the final of the Northern Railway Inter-Division Football Tournament at Ambedkar Stadium on Monday.

In the semi-final matches on Sunday, Delhi Division defeated Jagadhari Workshop 2-0 while Headquarters also scored an identical 2-0 victory against Bikaner Division.

In the first match, Delhi Division, dominating the midfield, went on the offence from the very beginning but despite their best efforts they could not open their account in the first half. However, in the second session, Delhi Division not only forced more chances, but also converted two of them into goals. Vimal Thapa drew first blood two minutes after resumption while Shyam Kumar pumped in the second goal at the fag end of the match.

Like the first tie, the second semi-final was also well-contested, but no goal was scored in the first half.

Headquarters, who were on the offensive from the start, however had to spent many heart-stopping movements before they could hit the bull’s eye to open their account.

Outside left Bhupender Sharma struck the first goal in the 61st minute, and two minutes later, inside-right Lalit Singh consolidated the lead with a neat goal.

Second cricket Test live on ESPN-Star
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, August 4
After suffering a terrible battering in the first Test at Lord’s, a bruised India will take on England in the second Test, in the four-Test series, at Trent Bridge from August 8 to 12.

The first session of the Test will begin every day at 3.30 pm and the second session from 6.10 pm. The third Test will be played at Headingly from August 22 to 26 while the fourth Test will be played at the Oval from September 5 to 9.

India have won only 16 Test matches abroad in their 71-year-old cricket history. The second Test offers India a chance to better that record. But the crushing defeat inflicted by England on India in the first Test at Lord’s came as a shocking setback after Saurav
Ganguly and his boys had very convincingly lifted the NatWest one-day international triangular series, featuring England and Sri
Lanka also.

As for England captain Nasser Hussain’s men, they would rather like to emulate the victories they scored over Sri Lanka against India too and the big victory in the first Test against the visitors has considerably bolstered their confidence.

Finance Minister Mahender Singh Saathi is in a particularly generous mood these days. After hauling up councillors for not spending the money that he so liberally extends them, he has now got the Expenditure Finance Committee to approve a tranche of Rs 12.77 crore for undertaking new projects.

The Expenditure Finance Committee that has Mr Saathi as chairman on Saturday earmarked Rs 9.11 crore for a dental college and hospital at Maulana Azad Medical College and Rs one crore for launching the Centrally-sponsored “Deen Dayal Hath Kargha Protsahan Yojana” to promote handloom industries. A sum of Rs 40 lakh was sanctioned for the payment of interest to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for the construction of a hospital at Jahangirpuri in East Delhi.

Another Rs 10 lakh was earmarked for the purchase of 62 flats for government employees. Money for widening and strengthening of road No 236 at Vikas Puri in West Delhi and for construction of service road and footpath in some sectors of Prashant Vihar in Rohini in West Delhi were also sanctioned. Mr Saathi said the Dental college and hospital has about 500 patients reporting daily to the dental wing for treatment. Since it had become difficult to cater to that many patients, the government, he said, felt it was necessary to open a new dental college that will render high-speciality dental services to the common person. Among others who attended the meeting were Principal Secretary (Health) SP Agarwal, Secretary (Industry) Arun Mathur, Additional Secretary (Finance) Ranbir Singh, Additional Secretary (Planning) SM Mazumdar and Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department Deepak Narain.
